When playing Jurassic World Evolution 2 one of the biggest hurdles you'll face is storms. These will affect your park rating and profits as well as damage your buildings and fences. They can last quite a while and if you aren't prepared then a broken enclosure here, and a loss in your shops there and you can be on a fast track to bankruptcy in no time.

However, there are some steps you can take to minimize the fallout from storms - and not all of them are immediately obvious. We take a look at how storms affect your park, some steps you can take to prepare for them, and what to prioritize when they hit.

What Happens When A Storm Hits?

Storms will vary and include tropical storms and tornados. Each storm is randomly generated and differs in strength. All will have devastating effects on your park but the scale of damage will vary. If you take no precautions at all then you can expect any or even all of the following:

  • Heavy rain or snow
  • Guest injuries due to the weather
  • Severe guest unhappiness
  • Damaged buildings
  • Power outages
  • Broken fences
  • Stranded ranger teams
  • Escaped dinosaurs
  • Dinosaur illness (Common Colds and Pneumonia)
  • Drop in park rating
  • Drop in profits

As you can imagine this won't be good news for your park. However, the game has several ways to minimize or even eliminate the impact.

How To Turn Off Storms

If you are playing in Sandbox mode then you can stop storms completely. This is done in the settings when you create the sandbox world.

Underneath the settings for buildings, staff and guests is an option that contains several presets for things like dinosaur health, needs, and temperament. If you click the arrow on the right you can cycle through options like creative and standard until you reach custom. This setting allows you to change almost anything you can think of. However, you won't need to search far for the storm setting as Weather Level is the top option. Click through the options to select infrequent storms, calm weather, or even no weather changes at all.

How To Prepare For Storms

The game has storm defenses but they need to be researched per building and often seem to have minimal effect. Instead, take the money you save and invest in decent power infrastructure.

You'll often need to run on generators to begin with but it's recommended that you research power stations as soon as you can and set up a stable power grid. Generators will use fuel that requires replacing frequently costing large amounts of cash on a regular basis. However, while they aren't recommended for everyday use they can be vital during storms.

Power stations and power lines are often hit during storms. This can mean losing everything from facilities to fences. Since unpowered electric fences are almost as useless as no fence at all this is not something you want to see happen. So, get ahead of the game by placing generators in key locations. If your main power goes down any generators in range should kick in and run until either they run out of fuel, or the main power is repaired.

Prioritize generators that cover:

  • Ranger Stations - Since you'll need these to make repairs.
  • Carnivore Enclosures - You really don't want these dinosaurs escaping and chowing down on guests or other dinosaurs.
  • Emergency Shelters - These need to be operational during a storm.

This should give you enough time to begin to prioritize properly and keep your essential facilities running. This should be your main priority, along with ensuring park-wide emergency shelter coverage. Place shelters frequently making sure to prioritize the immediate area around hotels, shops, facilities, and attractions as these are where people will be.

It's also good to have a money buffer of up to a million or so to cover repairs. The larger your park, the larger buffer you may need. This is because broken buildings don't generate profit, and shops actually generate a loss. You'll also lose a lot of cash if you need to replace dinosaurs as well as their fences. Therefore, you don't want cash to be a barrier slowing down repairs.

How Can I Tell When A Storm Is About To Hit?

Your screen will display a red storm warning at the top when bad weather is incoming. This usually means you have around 10-15 seconds to prepare. However, there are some audible clues in the game itself that usually appear around 20-30 seconds before the storm hits so if you can hear them it gives you twice as much time to get ready. They are:

  • A rumble of distant thunder (heard across the park)
  • A park PA will announce the weather (heard when zoomed in on buildings)
  • A ranger will call out a warning (heard if you are driving a vehicle)

As soon as you know a storm is approaching you can begin to make plans.

What To Do When A Storm Hits

Once you have seen the storm warning you need to take swift action. The first thing you should do is pause the game. This will give you a little space to set plans in motion.

Tip: Before the storm hits save your game. Storms are random every time so reverting back to just prior to the start of a storm can mean you get hit with a less destructive variant the next time around.

After pausing and hitting save the first priority should be to open shelters. Click on any emergency shelter and select 'open all shelters.' This will mean guests start to take cover as soon as you unpause, minimizing the chances of injury.

Next, you'll want to queue up your helicopters to tranquilize your carnivores. Replacing dinosaurs is very costly and carnivores will fight each other as well as feast on guests and other dinosaurs. If they are tranquilized then it buys you time to fix any broken fences before they wake up, avoiding all these issues.

You should also recall ranger teams back to base, especially if there is snow. While MVU's can still move ranger teams will get stuck in the snow. If this happens in a dinosaur enclosure then the inhabitants will get very upset and trash the vehicle.

Finally, in a major storm, it's worth deactivating your shops. While they won't be usable guests can't use them while they are hiding in shelters anyway so it's worth saving the running costs. Just remember to open then back up when you close the shelters.

Once you've done all the instructions it's time to unpause and let the storm play out. While you can begin to make repairs during the storm this isn't recommended if there is snow as your ranger teams will get trapped.

Repairing The Damage

Now you need to rebuild your park. This may be a huge job or you may have got lucky. The priority order for repairs should be:

  • Fences
  • Shelters
  • Power Stations
  • Amenities
  • Attractions

Start repairs during the storm if possible and once it's over make sure to close the shelters and open the amenities.

While this list is usually optimal be prepared to be flexible. If guests are flooding back into the park then fixing a couple of attractions before the last amenities could help you generate more income faster. Likewise, if you have the cash to keep the generators up a little longer you can move power down the list. The main priorities are to keep the dinosaurs enclosed and the guests safe then to begin to recover costs. Park ratings and income will usually jump back up as soon as the repairs are made and the park is functional again.
