While The Icy Slopes do not feature the only chase segment in Kao The Kangaroo, this is the only stage that is almost exclusively composed of chase segments. And there is a shocking amount of variety here! You will be sliding down slopes, avoiding icicles, dodging giant snowballs, crashing through signs, and even sliding on frozen rails (Tony Hawk style).

This stage is easily one of the most invigorating in the game. However, it also features a number of collectibles that need to be obtained the first time around. So, a little preparation will help to make sure that you don't miss anything. That is where this guide comes in, of course!

Step-By-Step Collectible Guide

The Icy Slopes stage starts with you sliding down the mountain. You won't be controlling the speed of your descent, so the only thing you need to worry about is dodging pitfalls, jumping over spikes, and breaking signs (you do this with your airborne spinning tail attack). At the end of the first section, you will go careening off the cliff's edge and will need to use your grappling hook to avoid falling to your death.

As a reward for completing this segment, you will receive your first rune (1/2). Now, jump onto the frozen pole and start sliding down. There will be icicles impeding your progress, but you can break through them in the same way you were able to break the signs in the first segment (though these will take one fire charge). Once you exit the cave, there will be another railing to your right. Hop on it and gain the letter K.

Hop back over to the main rail. You will now have to periodically jump between rails to avoid falling off of them. Just ahead, hovering above a sign, is your first crystal (1/7). Jump up and grab it. Immediately after you get the crystal, there will be an alternate rail to your left. Jump onto it. You will obtain both a scroll (1/1) and another crystal (2/7) from this rail loop. Once you have claimed both, get back onto the main rail.

You will have to hop back and forth (in quick succession) between different rails to avoid the escaping steam. Another crystal (3/7) will be hovering above a sign up ahead, so make sure to jump and grab it. After another bout of avoiding steam, the rail will come to an abrupt end. If you time your jump correctly you will be able to get a heart piece here.

You will now drop down onto a giant ice slide. Generally speaking, when you are on the ice slope segments of this stage, you are better off following the coin trail, as it will weave you in and out of the traps. At the end of the slide you will have a short grappling section, then you will hit another checkpoint and gain another rune (2/2).

At this checkpoint, there will be a house with an ice door. There is a fire charge to the left of the house, so grab that if you don't currently have one. Inside the house, you will find the letter A as well as a treasure chest. Now, climb to the roof of the house and jump on the trampoline to get back on the rail.

You will be back to hopping between rails to avoid steam, but this stage has one more trick ups its leave: dark energy rails. That's right, you will now have to break dark crystals to create rails to slide on. The first example of this will create an optional rail loop to your right; make sure you don't miss this one as there are three crystals (4/7, 5/7, and 6/7) on this loop.

Not long after you collect the crystals, there will be an additional dark energy rail loop to your left, this one holds the letter O. After you collect the O, get back on the main rail. Segments of the main rail will require that you hit the dark crystal that comes before them. While you generally stick to the rail pretty well, it is easy to jump over some of these, missing them completely. If that happens you will have to restart from the house.

At the very end of the rail, the final crystal (7/7) will be dangling a few feet from where the rail ends. You only have one chance to get this crystal, as once you fall down you will reach a checkpoint. The final segment of this level has you back sliding on another icy slope.

Here you are going to want to try to follow that coin trail again. There is a new trap, giant icicles which will drop from the ceiling. One thing to keep an eye out for is the extra life. There is one on the left side of the slope during the third icicle section. From here on out, just follow the coins, and you will be done in no time.
