Kick-Ass was a kick-ass R-rated comic book flick that was released in 2010, predating the likes of Logan, Deadpool, and Joker. It was directed by Matthew Vaughn but he didn't return for the sequel. Instead, the 2013 follow-up was helmed by Jeff Wadlow, earning a much lower 32% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Vaughn is returning for the reboot, and he said it's "fucking [wild]".
"Oh, you've got a big reboot, a big reboot of Kick-Ass in two years," Vaughn said during a King's Man press junket when asked if the series would ever return. "Big reboot... It's so fucking [wild] that I can't talk about it. But we've got that ready to go. All the rights revert back in two years and then we're going to reboot it."
Vaughn is going to shift up approach, making a Kick-Ass that nobody will expect or see coming. At the time, it was controversial - the only other major R-rated comic book movie of that era was Wanted which dropped a lot of the superhero and villain motifs for a more Matrix-like story. Kick-Ass embraced its roots, being a brutal Spider-Man-like film, albeit without the powers. It featured a plucky young everyman with real-world struggles, juggling two lives, fighting street-level thugs. Sounds familiar, eh?
"I think Kick-Ass... it became a new type of genre," Vaughn added. "When we made it, everyone was like, 'Oh you can't make R-rated superheroes. No one will want to see an R-rated superhero. You can't do this. You can't do that.'
"I had to say 'dare' and it was so [wild] that I went, 'Yeah, great. It'll cause just as much controversy and everyone will talk about it and as many people will love it will hate it.' I'm not saying it hasn't got the characters in it and won't have. I'm just saying it's not what anyone could be imagining. I'm going to need one very, very brave actor or actress to play the new Kick-Ass because it will scare the shit out of them."
However, the comic's author - Mark Millar - says he hasn't had any talks with Vaughn about a third film or reboot. Perhaps these are talks that will be had when the rights revert or perhaps Vaughn is getting ahead of himself - whatever the case, it's clear that he wants to come back for more.
