It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Kingdom Hearts III was the most anticipated video game release of 2019. The game had been in development for what seemed like an eternity, with the franchise receiving multiple prequels and lead-ups to the big followup to Kingdom Hearts II. Kingdom Hearts III was finally released on January 29th, and is the game everyone's talking about. Now, Square Enix has revealed the game's expected success. Kingdom Hearts III has shipped five million copies globally.

The big reason why Kingdom Hearts III has been so anticipated is because it serves as the culmination of everything that has happened before. Sora's journey to Keyblade master in Kingdom Hearts, the Organization's arrival in Chain of Memories, Aqua's story in Birth by Sleep, and so much more culminates in Kingdom Hearts III. Of course, that's not the only reason fans were excited. The Disney worlds featured were some of the most anticipated yet.

In the game, we get to visit some of the most beloved Pixar and Disney Animation worlds. Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Frozen, and Tangled all make their Kingdom Hearts debut here. There's also Big Hero 6 and Pirates of the Caribbean. Simply put, Kingdom Hearts III not only serves as the big climax to the series, but also as a love letter to Disney, much like the original Kingdom Hearts. Although the game did not achieve a score of 90 on Metacritic, it has a respectable 85, tied with the first game. The highest rated installment is still Kingdom Hearts II, with an 87.

As for what's next for the franchise, it's hard to say. It's likely we won't get another game for awhile to let the effects of Kingdom Hearts III linger. There are still some notable worlds to feature, such as The Incredibles and Inside Out. One can imagine seeing Coco and Moana in a future game as well. As the years go on, there will always be new worlds to include. But for now, fans can enjoy completing Kingdom Hearts III, and discussing the overall franchise up until this point.
