It took almost two decades to get a numbered sequel after Kingdom Hearts II. As every spinoff released in the meantime was canon, it is often easy to forget that fact. How long will it take to get to Kingdom Hearts 4 then?

Hopefully the answer to that is sooner rather than later. This year alone saw the release of DLC, Re:Mind, and the most recent spinoff, Melody of Memory. It was a big year for revelations if one dug deep enough. The stage has been set for Kingdom Hearts 4 so let’s go through what is possible in the hopefully near future. Yes, there will be spoilers.

8 Unreality And Quadratum

The two biggest revelations learned in Melody of Memories is in regard to there being another reality not attached to the world of light, darkness, or the in-between. It’s basically a way for Square Enix to create an alternate reality where things may not work the same as in the main series. This plane of existence is known as Unreality. The first destination in this universe is the city shown in the secret movie of Kingdom Hearts III which now has a name, Quadratum, which is the place Sora and Riku are now stuck in.

7 The Final Fantasy Characters Are Still Around

Quadratum translates to Square which might mean fans will finally be treated to not just a pure Final Fantasy world, but one built on all of Square Enix’s properties That would make sense for a number of reasons.

First of all, the Final Fantasy characters like Cid were back via the DLC, confirming they weren’t written out of the series. Secondly, Sora fights the hero of Verum Rex, Yozora, who is basically a stand in for Noctis. Is Quadratum a way for Nomura to remake Final Fantasy XV in his image?

6 Sora And Riku

Let’s go through what everyone is doing to help better understand what could come into Kingdom Hearts 4 and or more spinoffs. It’s not a big revelation to say Sora and Riku will be in Quadratum. That’s where they were at the end of Kingdom Hearts and that is presumably where the next game will start. Since they are separated it might work out like Dream Drop Distance again. One destiny, two paths. However, it would be cool to finally buck that trend and have them fight together for once.

5 Aqua And Kairi

Kairi spent the entirety of Kingdom Hearts III training. It wasn’t enough because she gets easily destroyed by Xehanort. Thanks to Sora she is resurrected but that also meant sacrificing his life for hers and now he is trapped in another dimension. Presumably, Melody of Memory was going to be her game but she is practically absent from it. At the end of the game she says she wants to train with Aqua which could mean a girl-powered spinoff, set of side missions with those two in Kingdom Hearts 4, or they might just play out in cutscenes again.

4 Mickey's Magical Quest

Back in the 16-Bit era, Mickey was a platform king. Thanks to Capcom, he had a series of action platformers all under the Magical Quest umbrella and they were all great. Except for Epic Mickey, he has taken a backseat as a video game star recently. As Kairi decides to go with Aqua at the end of Melody of Memory, Mickey is assigned to research the old Keyblade Masters at Scala ad Caelum. As this was already used twice as a playable environment, this might mean Mickey will be playable here too. Whether that will lead to its own game is unknown.

3 Donald, Goofy, And The Rest

The final assignment in that game goes to Donald and Goofy. They are tasked with telling everyone about Sora, Unreality, and Quadratum. That’s because there were others searching for him around Radiant Garden, The Land of Departure, and Twilight Town. This is probably referencing Axel, Ventus, Terra, and everyone else in the extended hero posse. This probably won’t turn into a game though and will be handled in cutscene form at best.

2 Xehanort Might Still Be Alive

There are two reasons why fans might believe Xehanort is still alive. One, he got his own game via the Dark Road expansion for the mobile game. It’s not really a Xehanort game but it is close enough.

More pressingly he appears in The Final World with Kairi and even seems to know about Unreality. Anything is possible in Kingdom Hearts is the point so don’t be too shocked to see him again.

1 There Is Another Sora

This may not amount to anything, but there is another Sora out there. That’s the version fans played out in the DLC. Just like the spinoff, Re:Coded, a digital version of Sora was created to find answers. This basically amounted to a series of boss battles which Cid and the others were hoping would lead to Sora’s whereabouts. Will this digital Sora appear again? Maybe there will be a Re:Coded 2 in the future.
