Kingdoms of Amalur first launched in 2012 for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. It was an ambitious game to be sure, was fairly well-received, but also didn't gather as much attention as the developers wanted. It's one of those RPGs from the last generation that has laid dormant for years now.

11 Racial Bonuses

This is a in game menu screenshot from Kingdoms of Amalur-Re-Reckoning.

There are four races one can choose at the beginning of Kingdoms of Amalur: Almain, Varani, Ljosalfar, and Dokkalfar. The best race for beginners is the Varani because it adds bonuses for lock picking, a skill that comes in the handiest for getting loot early on in the game.

Each race gives you three different skill bonuses that can help you better create the class type you want to play with. While Varani might be the best for beginners, you will want to pick a different race if you prefer magic over weapons.

10 Patron Bonuses

Perhaps even more important than selecting a race is picking out which of the deities you want as your patron. Not all deities are available to each race so your choice of which god or goddess' benefits you want comes directly from your choice of race.

Deities offer several bonuses ranging from boosting your health to increasing your resistance to elemental damage. The choice of patron deity cannot be changed after starting the game, but you can temporarily gain other deities' bonuses by visiting their shrines that dot the Amalur landscape.

Kingdoms of Amalur default players to having them hold down the X button, on PS4, to run. That seems ancient by today’s standards. So an easy hot tip to follow is to go into the options.

Changing it so that players can press down on the L3 button, again on PS4, will make the game feel more modern. Thankfully this can be changed. For the Xbox One you will still need to go to options and change it to where you will just have to press the A button instead of holding it down.

8 Save Often

This might be another obvious tip for Kingdoms of Amalur, but players should save as often as possible. The game does a fairly good job with auto-saving when going into buildings, but a lot of the game will be played on the world map. This can mean, in death, players can lose progress quickly.

This helpful tip can be applied to many RPGs that offer the ability to save anywhere. It's always good to save when you are just exploring the map as you may come into danger more frequently than you think.

7 You Can Change Your Play Style At Any Time

After the initial prison, players will quickly meet Agarth, the Fateweaver, who will bestow a Fate upon the player. Fates are an essential aspect of the game and act as its class system. Since you are the Fateless One, you can change your fate at any time so don't fret about being locked in on one choice.

Fateweavers, like Agarth, can respec all your skill and ability points at any time during the game for a small fee. This means you can interchange your play style and don't have to worry about being stuck in something you don't like.

6 Level Up Before Continuing The Main Questline

This one is essential if you don’t want to get completely destroyed later on. It may seem necessary to continue on the main questline as soon as possible, but doing this before properly leveling up will lead to some intense and annoying fights.

If you are really eager, go no further than to Arden’s Hut before you hit level five. Because after that you travel to Ettinmere, named after the Ettin who make their home there. These guys are everywhere and if you can’t handle them, you will be without health potions before you even begin the quest.

5 DLC Content

Thanks to THQ Nordic, you can experience Kingdoms of Amalur in all its glory since all the DLC content and equipment comes readily available for you when you buy the remastered edition.

This means good loot is waiting for you in the special delivery content chest in Gorhart. In addition, you also get two additional questlines, The Teeth of Naros which centers on exploring uncharted lands, and a pirate-themed questline The Legend of Dead Kel. These two quests add more characters and even more loot for you to get.

4 Add To Junk

Grabbing all of that DLC will surely fill up the player’s inventory, even with the backpack upgrade. Selling the unwanted gear will also give players some much-needed early cash.

This means cash that actually might be needed to buy this backpack. Anyway, whether one does this or not, Kingdoms of Amalur has a neat way to organize unwanted goods. They can organize them into a junk folder with a press of a button. That way when they go to a shop, they can sell all junk with another quick button prompt.

3 Hot Bar Potions

Getting deeper into the menus, one should not forget this next hot tip. Consumables can be placed in a hot bar, or in this case, a ring, to use quickly in battle.

Using one health potion puts it on cooldown though so it might be a good idea to place multiple health and mana potions into the ring, just in case. You will want a lot of potions in the beginning of the game as you explore since Dalentarth has lots of enemies spawn when you venture off roads and paths.

2 Get A House

Backpack upgrades can only go so far. That's why houses are essential if you want to maximize the amount of loot you have. You'll want to have as much loot as you can to get the most money. Thankfully, the village of Canneroc gives you the chance to get a house early on in the game.

Once there, players will rescue a civilian from spiders, which will then prompt the quest, A Tangled Web. Follow it to the end, don’t kill Barten, and he will give players a house. It is here that players can then start storing their goods. There are other player houses too that require special quests to be completed before you can own them.

1 Get Quake

This is a in game menu screenshot from Kingdoms of Amalur-Re-Reckoning.

There are many skill tips one can follow, but a good first piece of advice is to get the Quake spell. It can be found under the Might skill tree. One must put five points into the tree before it unlocks, which means players will have to at least level up twice. It truly is a force to reckon with.

Quake is one of the few spells that have a combo. It’s not only a devastating area attack, but it also looks cool like Earthbending from Avatar: The Last Airbender. The great thing with Amalur is that you can get this Might ability without fully committing to the heavy armor and sword-wielding play style
