In a surprising announcement, THQ Nordic is releasing a remastered version of Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning. Not only that, but the strange and unpredictable company plansto release a mysterious expansion sometime in 2021.

Reckoning was the sole game produced by 38 Studios before it shuttered in 2012. The game had developed a cult following in spite of the fact that it would receive no further support, expansions, or sequels of any kind. The game had a sequel in production according to Gamerant but after bankruptcy the IP ended up in the hands of Rhode Island.

Yet in 2018 THQ Nordic purchased the rights to the game in 2018 and were developing the game as a remaster in secret. According to PC GAMER, the news was broken by a mistaken listing on the Microsoft Store in June.

The since deleted listing stated that the game was to be released in August, which has since been amended by IHQ Nordic via a Youtube trailer to be September 8. The remaster titled Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning will be followed up by an expansion called Fatesworn.

The exact nature of Fatesworn is a bit of a mystery with few if any details regarding the story. THQ Nordic has been quiet regarding this add-on to the original story and will likely release more information after the remaster’s release. Some fans have speculated it may be the originally intended sequel in some form, but nothing is certain.

Since its founding in 2011 THG Nordic has been steadily scooping up dead or forgotten franchises and resurrecting a number of them. Examples of some of the popular franchises they’ve attempted to reboot have been Darksiders, Red Faction, Painkiller, and the soon to be released Destroy All Humans.

Considering how successful some of their work has been at giving new life to old franchises it’s likely that Reckoning will do very well. Whether it will expand into a series as was originally intended remains to be seen and will likely hinge upon how well Fatesworn performs.
