Since its release in 2000, Kirby 64 has remained one of the hero's most memorable adventures. The series' first foray with 3D graphics somehow made its protagonist even more endearing while also showcasing his universe's beauty and darkness.

One of the features that allowed Kirby 64 to stand out from other entries is Kirby's new ability to combine two powers to create a new one. Seven classic abilities like Spark, Cutter, and Bomb can be fused together to use one of Kirby's 28 potential Power Combos. Each one is unique and essential if you want to collect every Crystal Shard in the game, but there are certainly some you should try to use more than others.

10 Burn And Spark - Fire Starter

Kirby uses Fire Starter on Cairn on Ripple Star

A few of the Power Combos in Kirby 64 have never reappeared in another game. Fire Starter is one of those abilities, and it's easy to understand why Kirby hasn't done it again since this journey. Combining Burn and Spark allows him to rub a towel on his head until he eventually combusts into flames.

It almost feels like a Jackass stunt gone wrong, but after performing the stunt, Kirby cannot take damage and instantly defeats almost any foe in his way. You won't be able to fly or stop running around until the fire is extinguished, but being invulnerable and the look on Kirby's face is certainly worth it.

9 Ice And Stone - Curling Stone

Kirby turns into a Curling Rock and Slides Past Dogon

It's not often that Curling is referenced in video games. It's one of the few sports that failed to capture an audience as a video game series and quickly settled for 'minigame in the Mario & Sonic series' status by the mid-2000s.

Curling Stone is a very handy ability to have in tight spaces. Using it lets Kirby bounce off of walls while also freezing any enemy he comes into contact with. It can also be used to travel through a level quicker, though Kirby will slow down eventually. Unlike Fire Starter, Curling Stone would re-appear in Star Allies as a Friend Ability.

8 Needle And Needle - Swiss Army Kirby

Many of the more creative and fascinating Power Combos stem from combining two different abilities together. There are also plenty of powerful skills you can use by fusing two of the same skills instead. Mixing two Needle skills unlocks one of Kirby's most lethal and terrifying attacks.

This may be one of the cruelest ways for one of Kirby's enemies to perish. The pink hero quickly shoots out a plethora of sharp objects like a cactus, a bee stinger, and even a syringe that takes out anything close by. It's great for taking out waves of incoming enemies, and would eventually return to the series in Kirby and the Forgotten Land as the Clutter Needle.

7 Bomb And Stone - Dynamite

Kirby throws Dynamite at enemy while wearing his safety helmet in a cave

There aren't many attacks that put Kirby himself at risk. The Bomb power allows him to throw a bomb at an enemy, but after mixing it with the Stone ability, the bomb is swapped out for Dynamite which can pulverize nearly anything. If Kirby neglects safety protocols and refuses to wear a helmet, he may find himself caught in the blast alongside his foes.

After throwing the dynamite, you won't have long to protect yourself from the explosion. It will blow up if it hits an enemy or after a couple of seconds, and you will need to hold down on the controller to have Kirby wear his safety helmet. The helmet won't save you from anything else, but if you use it correctly, Dynamite could potentially get you through tough encounters with ease.

6 Ice And Spark - Refrigerator

Fridge Kirby tosses food at giant Bouncy enemy

Long before Kirby was possessing fridges with his mouth in Forgotten Land, he was simply transforming into them in Kirby 64. Similar to how the Dynamite Power Combo is one of the few skills to potentially harm you, Refrigerator is one of the rare abilities that can actually heal you.

Using Refrigerator at any time lets Kirby turn into a fridge and spit out three delicious snacks. These treats will do damage to any enemies they land on or can be eaten to recover health. It's not the most practical power to use throughout the game, but it could be a lifesaver in any areas that consistently deal damage to you.

5 Ice And Ice - Giant Snowball

Kirby as a Snowball absorbs enemies while rolling across the ice

Another unique Power Combo that can be used by mixing two of the same abilities together is the Giant Snowball. After mixing two Ice powers, Kirby can now roll forward as a snowball, picking up any enemy in his path and instantly freezing them.

The Giant Snowball is excellent for taking out a series of enemies in a straight line. The snowball explodes as soon as it hits an obstacle, so it will only ever be effective on linear levels. After finally hitting a wall, it's fun to watch the snowball explode and see every enemy you picked up pop out like ice cubes.

4 Cutter And Stone - Rock Helpers

Rick the Hamster Statue Moves Forward In A Cave Surrounded By Floppers

Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 2 and 3, the titular hero was accompanied by a group of new allies known as Animal Friends. Each one has a special power that is essential for Kirby's success in both games. While they don't make an official appearance in Kirby 64, Kirby still acknowledges them by carving himself into statues inspired by them and using their abilities to collect Crystal Shards.

Combining Cutter and Stone allows Kirby to transform into one of six possible Animal Friend statues. Turning into Rick lets you climb walls, while other statues like Coo and Pitch change how quickly or how high Kirby can fly. You are also immune to damage from enemies while in statue form, and you can hurt them just by walking into them.

3 Bomb And Cutter - Shuriken Bomb

Kirby throws Shuriken Bomb at Bumber's back in the forest

Many of the Power Combos throughout Kirby 64 are relatively intuitive and don't require much effort to understand or master. The Shuriken Bomb is one of the exceptions and rewards you for learning how to properly aim and utilize its powerful blasts.

After obtaining the ability, the first thing you will want to do is practice how to use it. Kirby will throw the shuriken directly in front of him, and it becomes invisible until it hits either an enemy or object. Knowing where it's going to land before you throw it will be instrumental in becoming a ninja master and taking out every foe ahead of you before they even see you.

2 Spark And Stone - Lightning Boulder

Kirby walks around the desert with his Rock yo-yo

Remember the days of walking down the street, chewing on bubble gum, and playing with your favorite yo-yo? Kirby sure does and one of the strongest abilities in the game lets him walk around nonchalantly while also destroying everything in his path.

After receiving the Spark and Stone powers, Kirby can shoot out a giant rock on an electric string that bounces off walls and obliterates any enemies or blocks around you. The electric string even goes through walls and ceilings, taking out foes in areas you haven't even been to yet. It's the perfect Power Combo for when you need to replay a level to pick up some collectibles you may have missed the first time.

1 Cutter And Spark - Double-Bladed Laser Sword

Kirby Holds His Lightsaber Over A Pool Of Lava

It's hard to look at Kirby's Double-Bladed Laser Sword and not notice a slight resemblance to the Lightsabers from Star Wars. Whether it's a reference to the popular franchise or just a fun idea the developers at HAL Laboratory had, the weapon is by far one of the most fun, powerful, and well-animated Power Combos in all of Kirby 64.

Kirby swings the sword with grace, and its wide range easily eliminates enemies before they have the chance to get close. You can also use it to deflect most projectiles, but be careful because the power does limit how much Kirby can jump. It has never appeared in a game since Kirby 64, so you should try and use it as much as you can during this adventure.
