Nintendo has just announced a brand new Kirby game for the Nintendo Switch. Unlike previous offerings, which either put Kirby into a brawler or platformer, Kirby and the Forgotten Land seems to place Kirby in his very first open-world adventure game. And it seems strangely post-apocalyptic.

The trailer we saw today during the Nintendo Direct presentation seemed to portray a decaying city that’s being reclaimed by nature. It’s also overrun by monsters of all sorts and sizes, as well as prickly beasts that Kirby has to beat back.

As with all previous Kirby games, he still sucks and he still blows, plus he also gets a selection of power-ups. We saw a Link-power-up where he gains Link’s hat, a sword, and the ability to turn beasts into puree, but he also has the ability to turn into a spikey ball, spit fire, and freeze enemies in their tracks.

There looked to be some mild platforming, some exploration, and at least two big boss fights against a giant gorilla and an alligator. Perhaps the message here is that nature is the one true enemy of progress?

Either way, Kirby and the Forgotten Land will hit the Nintendo Switch next spring.
