Steve isn't the only square character who is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as Kirby will transform into a cube after devouring a Minecraft fighter.

In many ways, Kirby is the most troublesome character for the developers of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as he needs to be updated every time a new DLC fighter is added to the game. Kirby's gimmick since the original Super Smash Bros. is the ability to devour his foes and copy their abilities. As such, Kirby needs a new transformation for each DLC character. Kirby's voice actor also needs to record new lines for each transformation.

Kirby will receive his biggest change yet when Minecraft Steve is added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Masahiro Sakurai recently hosted a Direct that focused on Steve's combat abilities. The developers added a number of subtle Minecraft references to Steve, including a bed appearing whenever he's put to sleep by an attack. One such reference happens to Kirby if he devours Steve, as he will transform into a blocky character, like the kind from Minecraft.

It's unclear what abilities Kirby will gain from devouring the Minecraft characters, as they possess a number of unique powers. It's possible that he will be able to spawn TNT blocks, summon minecarts, or create blocks of his own to use as platforms. The Direct only showed off his new appearance and not his powers.

Kirby's copy abilities have given him some cool powers, as well as adding some amazing weapons to his arsenal. Through the Super Smash Bros. series, Kirby has used Bayonetta's guns, the Falchion from the Fire Emblem series, the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7, the Monado from Xenoblade Chronicles, and can perform Hadokens from the Street Fighter games. Kirby was created by Sakurai, which means that he receives more attention to detail than the other Super Smash Bros. fighters. The fact that such work was put into giving him a new model when eating the Minecraft crew is living proof of this.

Steve from Minecraft is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on October 14, 2020.
