Bandai Namco is right behind Nintendo and Sega when it comes to milking '90s Nostalgia. Though a significant amount of active gamers were naught but infants at the time, various companies have all seen massive amounts of success trotting out their old eight and sixteen-bit titles for modern hardware.

That’s not to say that they don’t have a hand in the development of excellent modern titles—they’ve published recent hits like The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan, Code Vein, and the Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch remaster. Yet, with a connection to franchises like Pac Man, Dig Dug, and Galaga, their name is synonymous with retroism.

In fact, Bandai Namco seems to be intent on reviving a few of their less-recognizable franchises. They’ve recently fired for a set of new trademarks in Japan, those being for Mr. Driller, Klonoa, and Splatterhouse, all with the subtitle of ‘Encore.’

From this, we can more or less guarantee that these franchises will be making some sort of return in the future, and the smart money would be on remastered or enhanced ports of each series’ most recognizable title. For those who don’t know, the recently-released Katamari Damacy Reroll, a modernized port of the quirky PS2 classic, was actually known as Katamari Damacy Encore in Japan. It doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots here.

So, we’re most likely seeing revitalized versions of these old Bandai Namco titles, and there’s sure to be a swarm of older gamers stumbling over themselves to relive the glory days of a bygone era in gaming. There’s nothing wrong with that, obviously—these days, retro is big business. It would be particularly awesome to see the original Mr. Driller, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, and the original Splatterhouse trilogy on Switch.

Yes, the first Splatterhouse can be played on Switch via the Namco Museum Arcade Pack, but, come on, that’s not the same thing.

However, we don’t quite know which games from which franchises we’ll be seeing. The original Mr. Driller title was featured on the PlayStation Classic, and Sony may want to keep that one under lock and key for now. When it comes to Klonoa, there’s really only one option, though a revamp of the 2008 Wii title isn’t theoretically impossible. Also, a port of the sixteen-bit Splatterhouse games would be a no-brainer, though we can’t rule out that weird and awesome 2010 beat-em-up.

There’s always a chance that we could be seeing new titles from these franchises, as well, but that doesn’t seem nearly as likely. If Bandai Namco weren’t willing to do anything new with Katamari Damacy Reroll, then there’s no reason to think that any of these probably-upcoming titles will be new.

Bandai Namco has yet to make any official statements regarding these trademark filings, and it’s likely that, much like the Katamari remake, these releases will be fairly quiet affairs. Still, at the end of the day, these titles are timeless, and it would be fantastic to see them come back, at least in some form, after long periods of dormancy.
