Although it’s still no Breath of the Wild, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity continues to put up great numbers on the Nintendo Switch, by Koei Tecmo's own accounts, the best-selling Musou title of all time shows no signs of getting off The Legend of Zelda wave that’s already pushed sales up to 3.7 million copies shipped.

In the midst of what was a bit of a dry spell in terms of new releases for Nintendo, most of the game’s sales came within the first week of its launch, in which 3 million copies were quickly grabbed by eager Zelda fans keen to find out just what Age of Calamity’s prequel story was all about. However, those same Zelda fas soon found out Age of Calamity’s plot edges more towards meme-worthy, rather than it being like the epic tales they’ve grown accustomed to in previous entries for the franchise.

Koei Tecmo shared news of the milestone in the usual fashion, also noting an increase in sales for another of its other Warriors-style games, Persona 5 Strikers, as well as Nioh 2 and Atelier Ryza 2. While Age of Calamity was expected to push a decent number of copies, the game’s sales performance managed to put it past other notable Switch exclusives like Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Paper Mario: The Origami King, ever since Koei Tecmo disclosed its initial results.

For those that enjoyed the clever Zelda-themed combat mechanics in a hack and slash game, Age of Calamity also has an upcoming DLC pack set to release this summer, which is already available for pre-order. The two-part DLC content could certainly help boost interest in the game a fair bit so Age of Calamity can start aiming at 4 million copies shipped.

Currently, Age of Calamity sits right behind the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and the recently released Monster Hunter Rise in the all-time sales charts for the Switch, meaning if there’s one lesson to be learned from Nintendo’s partnership with Koei Tecmo is that putting its top franchises outside their comfort zone is at least good enough to guarantee good sales. With no further updates from Breath of the Wild 2, Age of Calamity is still a great Zelda game to pick up in 2021, just like it was last year.

Despite Young Impa and the Star Wars-inspired Terrako definitely steal the spotlight, it’s still the second-best way to jump inside BOTW Hyrule for now (well, there always Genshin Impact). All things considered, the Zelda themes are enough to ignore’s the game sub-par performance, an issue that also plagues Koei Tecmo’s upcoming Ninja Gaiden Master Collection on the Switch.
