The Magic Circle

Jasper and Eva are waiting outside of a store called the Mystic Circle in Burbank. They are waiting for the last of the customers to leave. While they wait, Eva gives Jasper a magical potion that she brewed for him that can heal his wounds, the same as one she had given him in the past. Eva comments on Jasper's speed (referring to his Celerity Discipline) and he mentions that Nelli G. of the coterie can also use it. Eva asks Jasper to teach her about Celerity in the future. Jasper wants to know more about the Wyrd Sisters, seeing as he owes Hester a favor for fixing the broken magical mirror from the Labyrinth. Eva reveals that she had never met them before they came to Los Angeles.

Lydia (the shop assistant at The Magic Circle) leaves the store and flips the sign on the door to closed. Eva and Jasper approach The Magic Circle and are welcomed inside by Kyoko, who tells them that the mirror is fixed. The Magic Circle is an occult store filled with magic bric-a-brac that is intended to impress curious mortals, but Eva and Jasper don't have long to marvel at the merchandise, as Hester emerges and tells them that she has a prior engagement. Hester tells Kyoko that she is under curfew and must be back two hours before dawn. Kyoko shows them the mirror, which is covered in black cloth. Hester originally told Jasper that the mirror would take a few days to fix, but it actually took months, Kyoko asks the two if she can accompany them to the Labyrinth, as she has been cooped up in The Magic Circle and wants some excitement. She also wants to return to the location of her encounter with Maximillian Strauss, as it left her with a blue streak in her hair and a blue tinge to her magical flames, so she wants to know the change occurred. Jasper says Kyoko can come, but he must do exactly as he says, as things have changed in the Labyrinth.

The three leave the store with the mirror in tow and they soon spot a figure standing in a nearby parking lot next to a fancy car. Jasper recognizes them as Greg, the ghoul of Nelli G. Greg wants to know where everyone has been for the past few months. He reveals that Nelli wants him to keep tabs on the group, as she has everyone's best interests at heart. Greg invites himself along and Jasper agrees, so long as he promises to step where he steps within the Labyrinth. Greg offers them a ride and clears out some space in his trunk for the mirror. The group sees a number of firearms, surveillance equipment, and specialized vampire-hunting gear in the trunk. Kyoko notices the abundance of grenades and Greg points out that they spread napalm after being thrown. Surprisingly, Eva asks for a grenade and puts it in her bag. They enter the vehicle and Jasper gives Greg the address to where they are going, which shows as an empty area on his GPS.

The group drives to a place filled with abandoned buildings near Griffith Park. They park in an isolated area and Jasper leads them to an empty building that used to be a slaughterhouse. Greg is unsettled by the sights and smells of the building, but the Kindred quite enjoy it. Jasper purposely left the back entrance to the Labyrinth looking the same as it did before, as he doesn't want people to know about the new traps he built over the past few months. He demonstrates one of the hidden pressure plates he added, causing wooden stakes to burst from the wall. Jasper tells them exactly where to step and they manage it without setting off any traps. They travel through some abandoned maintenance tunnels and quickly reach the sewers.

It doesn't take long for them to reach the Labyrinth, which is like something out of M.C. Escher's worst nightmares. The building does not make sense, with random pits leading to nowhere and walls that have their own twisting shadows. Greg asks what kind of place this is and Jasper admits that he doesn't know. Greg wants to know what they’re transporting and Jasper explains that it’s a magic mirror.

The Black Mirror

Jasper wants to test the mirror and he points out that it's a one-way teleportation device through an empty void of total darkness and cold. Greg is unsure at first, but Jasper points out that a ghoul (Ib) survived the process in the past. Jasper removes the cloth, revealing a mirror made of darkness. He takes a box from his backpack containing a key made from the same shadowy material as the mirror and combines the two. Everyone has to make a Willpower check, as waves of magical agony wash over the group, damaging them all to some degree. The darkness of the mirror dissipates, revealing a room with an empty stone slab, a few black duffle bags, and some scraps of paper on the floor. The sight of the empty slab shocks Eva and Jasper, as a member of Clan Nosferatu has been in torpor on that slab for as long as Jasper has been coming here... but now he's gone. Eva uses Sense the Unseen and notices something related to blood alchemy in one of the bags, she also fails a Rouse check in the process, making her hungrier. She uses Movement of the Mind to lift the bag off the ground. Kyoko also attempts Sense the Unseen and notices a magical ward on the far side of the room. Jasper empties his backpack and throws it through the portal and into the room... but nothing happens.

The bag that Eva is levitating starts twitching. Jasper uses Obfuscate to make himself and Eva invisible. They go through the portal and arrive in the room. Jasper opens the bag and an animated severed hand emerges, with an eyeball attached to its rear from sinew. Eva holds the hand in place with her magic and Jasper uses Scorpion's Touch to enchant his knife, before ramming it into the hand and killing it. Greg and Kyoko enter the room as the wall begins to move...

The Beast Takes Over

A slab has moved, revealing a mishappen creature made from stone with tusks and a set of wings. Eva recognizes that it's a gargoyle, which is a horror from the ancient world that is almost impervious to harm. The gargoyle blocks the only entrance from the room. Kyoko knows that the creature is sentient and can speak. Eva tells it to stand down and it refuses, saying that it's waiting for the master of the Chantry and that they shall wait here. Enraged, Eva uses Zeus' Fury and unleashes three magic bolts of electricity at the creature, causing it to drop to one knee. Jasper runs at the gargoyle and attempts to use Potence to move it. Jasper succeeds in knocking it back, giving everyone a clear shot. Eva fires another Zeus' Fury, but she fails another Rouse check, leaving her at Hunger 4. She blasts the creature with more electricity, while Kyoko conjures blue flame and strikes it, destroying one of its wings. The gargoyle touches the wall and the floor starts to shake. Jasper tries to punch the gargoyle with Potence, but the wall itself emerges and smashes into him. Eva drinks an Essence of Air potion, allowing her to fly. Jasper orders a retreat and grabs two of the bags. They make it into the tunnel leading to Jasper's haven and take a brief rest.

Eva is so hungry that she has come close to succumbing to the beast. Jasper offers her his wrist and she drinks his blood, giving him the overwhelming pleasure of The Kiss. Kyoko is shocked by this display and asks if they have done it before. Eva manages to pull herself away from Jasper, as Kyoko remarks that she has been a vampire for three years and has forgotten a lot about being a human, but everyone here is reminding her of the feeling.

The gargoyle's arm erupts from the ceiling and reaches for Eva. Jasper combines Rapid Reflexes and Soaring Leap, with the intention of ripping the arm off the wall. Greg grabs Kyoko, who grabs Eva, who casts Zeus' Fury... on herself. Jasper manages to pull the gargoyle through the wall and slam it to the ground, as magical lightning ravages Kyoko and Greg. A lot of Kyoko's skin and hair is burnt off in the attack. Meanwhile, the gargoyle switches its attention to Jasper, who tries to use Unseen Passage to escape. Jasper fails a Rouse check, putting him at Hunger 5, causing his Beast to rise to the surface. This is bad, as it means that Jasper is close to hunting his friends for their blood or trying to take on the gargoyle in a fight. The others realize something is wrong as Jasper tries to run back to the Labyrinth to lead the gargoyle away. Eva uses her magic to pull him back. The gargoyle stops pursuing them as they flee.

The group are badly wounded and seriously shaken, as Jasper leads Greg and Kyoko to an exit leading to the river. Jasper gives Kyoko the healing potion from earlier, fixing most of her burns. The taste of the potion briefly reminds Kyoko of food and drink other than blood. Jasper thanks them for coming to his home as Greg receives a text from Nelli, saying to tell Jasper and Eva that the Tremere are on the move. Kyoko and Greg talk about his life as a ghoul and she says she wants to use her powers to help out more. Greg says help is a tricky word, but she will never want for excitement. Kyoko realizes she can just make it home in time for curfew.

Eva thinks that Strauss is trying to send a message and that it was a mistake to let people into the Labyrinth. She remembers that gargoyles are weak to many of the same things that Kindred are and that they are powerless against things not made of stone. She thinks Jasper's haven is safe... for now. Jasper leaves to feed on something, while Eva does her best to contain her anger and not destroy his haven.

Helping A Shadow

Greg returns to his car and Ib (Noura Ibrahim) appears out of the shadows. She asks for his help and he refuses (due to being wounded), but she says that's she ordering him. Greg agrees and the two go to stake out a mysterious building. The two talk about what it was like for her as a ghoul and how being a Kindred comes with its own set of problems.
