Lance of the Indigo Elite Four has ended the long-running debate about dragons in the Pokemon world, by claiming in Pokemon Masters EX that not all dragons are Dragon-type.

Pokemon Red & Blue only had 151 Pokemon, and some types were rarer than others. As such, some trainers that specialized in certain types had to use a mixture of Pokemon. These include Agatha the Ghost-type trainer using Poison-type Pokemon, and Bruno the Fighting-type trainer using Rock/Ground-type Pokemon. Lance the Dragon-type trainer also had this issue, as his team at the end of Pokemon Red & Blue included a Gyarados (Water/Flying) and Aerodactyl (Rock/Flying). This was because there were only three Dragon-type Pokemon in Red & Blue: Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite.

Lance is currently appearing in one of the seasonal events in Pokemon Masters EX. He is seen wearing a Gyarados kimono. Screenshots of the event uploaded by PechaGummy on Twitter have revealed that Lance has a lot to say about Gyarados and the truth behind dragon Pokemon.

The question of what constitutes a dragon Pokemon has been disputed throughout the series. Charizard is not considered to be a dragon, but Mega Ampharos is, thanks to a Japanese pun. Alolan Exeggutor is a Dragon-type Pokemon, even though it's a huge palm tree with lots of heads.

So, there you have it. Not all dragons in the Pokemon world need to be Dragon-types. It's possible that Lance was referring to the Dragon Egg Group, which Gyarados belongs to, but that would also include Pokemon like Feebas and Scraggy. It's more likely that he is just referring to the concept of dragons as a whole. Lance came from an era when only a handful of Dragon-type Pokemon existed, but he has always used Pokemon that looked like dragons as well. Lance has used Pokemon like Aerodactyl, Charizard, and Gyarados on his team throughout the generations, even though the developers could have added more Dragon-types to his team over the years. Pokemon Masters EX has confirmed that there is more to being a dragon than typing, and Lance isn't likely to change his team anytime soon.
