The Last of Us TV show's first season will be made up of ten episodes. Each episode will be about an hour long.

The TV adaptation of The Last of Us might be in its early days, but the hype surrounding it has very much begun. Filming has started and more of the cast and crew continue to be revealed. Last week Dumbo's Nico Parker was confirmed to be playing the role of Joel's daughter, Sarah. Parker will join Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who will be playing lead characters, Joel and Ellie.

How big a role Parker will play in the show remains unclear because (spoiler alert) those who have played The Last of Us will know Sarah's role is short-lived. Since Parker was added to the cast, the show's writer and producer Craig Mazin has revealed The Last of Us's first season will be made up of ten episodes.

If news emerges that Parker is only signed on to appear in one episode, well, that will be an indicator of how closely the show will follow the events of the game. Mazin confirmed season one will be ten episodes long during a recent appearance on the Scriptnotes podcast. He also added that two of the show's directors are yet to be announced.

The theorizing regarding what elements of the game's story will be included can now continue to ramp up. The simplest path would be to have season one follow the events of the first game. However, there's more than enough content to have the first game span multiple seasons. HBO won't want to spread the content too thin, but also won't want to use up everything it has at its disposal should the show be a success and live on for multiple seasons.

While it may still be very early days for the show, it seems to be a case of so far so good. It certainly seems to stand a better chance of making it off the ground than the scrapped Last of Us movie. Pascal being cast in the role of Joel as opposed to Matthew McConaughey, who was HBO's first choice, is also good news, despite McConaughey's star power.
