It looks like developer Naughty Dog hit another home run with The Last of Us: Part II. The sequel to the best-selling game has smashed sales records in the last two days since its release. The Last of Us: Part II has beaten out Uncharted 4—PlayStation and Naughty Dog's previous record-holder—by 1% to become the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive in the UK, and that's before we take downloads into account, which could widen the margin significantly.

The equal to what Metacritic voters voted as "The best game of the decade" outsold its predecessor by 76%. Though, it's worth mentioning that the PlayStation 4 is a much more popular console than the PlayStation 3 was. The title has also outsold Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the year's previous record holder, by 40%.

A news release from GameIndustry.biz detailed the top 10 UK game rankings for the week ending June 20th, which saw TLoU in the number one spot. DLC for Pokémon Sword boosted sales for that game by 51%, while Animal Crossing dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since its release.

The Last of Us: Part II has enjoyed a lot of attention leading up to its release, particularly because the original was such a great game on the PS3. However, its timing may also have had something to do with its popularity. In a time when we call all connect with a story about being in quarantine and living through a pandemic, TLoUU2 seems to have been made for this year. Throw in the fact that TLoU2 is one of the world's biggest titles with LGBT representation and the extreme lengths that Naughty Dog went to to make the game accessible to people with disabilities, and you have a recipe for one of the greatest games of all time.

Naughty Dog did an amazing job with this title. Everything from the story to the graphics, to the merch—and yes, even to the controversy—has helped contribute to TLoU2's success. As we approach the next-generation console, it feels fitting that this game would mark the end of an era, and introduce the beginning of the next. No matter how you slice it, this franchise has solidified itself in PlayStation history and will be there from now until the end of time.
