Pokémon Sword & Shield have come under fire from the fanbase due to the absence of several key features and the removal of an undetermined number of Pokémon. A new trailer has been released for Pokémon Sword & Shield that showcases some of the new characters, features, and Pokémon that will be appearing in the games, which can hopefully win back the crowd.
Two of the major revelations from the trailer include version-exclusive Gym Leaders and a new facet of the Dynamax transformation that had not been revealed until now.
Alcremie is the latest Pokémon that is themed around deserts, where it joins such illustrious Pokémon as Vanilluxe and Swirlix. Alcremie is a Fairy-type Pokémon that provides cream for dishes used in meals that humans can eat, which makes it one of the few confirmed Pokémon that provide food for humans.
Alcremie has the Sweet Veil Ability, which affects opponents that strike it in battle. An opponent who is affected by Sweet Veil will lose its will to fight.
Duraludon is a Steel/Dragon-type Pokémon that is based on metallic alloys, which make it both light and durable. Duraludon's page on the official Pokémon website claims that it's an enemy of Tyranitar and the two can often be seen battling in the Galar region.
Duraludon can possess one of two abilities, including Light Metal and Heavy Metal. Light Metal halves the Pokémon's weight, while Heavy Metal doubles it, both of which affect the effects of different moves in the game.
Rolycoly is a Rock-type Pokémon that is based on coal. The Rolycoly once acted as a source of free coal for the residents of the Galar region in the days before electricity use was widespread.
Rolycoly can possess the new Steam Engine Ability, which increases its Speed stat when its hit with either a Fire-type or Water-type move. Rolycoly can also possess the Heatproof Ability, which halves damage from Fire-type moves and the burn status effect.
Yamper had originally been revealed during the Nintendo Treehouse: Live event at E3 2019. Now, new information about it has been revealed.
Yamper is an Electric-type Pokémon that has a unique Ability called Ball Fetch. If Yamper isn't holding an item and the player misses a throw with a Poké Ball, then it will retrieve the Poké Ball and return it to the player at the end of the battle.
New Version-Exclusive Gym Leaders
It has been revealed that Pokémon Sword & Shield will feature version-exclusive Gym Leaders for the first time since Pokémon Black & White.
Pokémon Shield features a Ghost-type Gym Leader named Allister, who is possibly named after Aleister Crowley - the famous British occultist. Allister's profile on the official Pokémon website notes that he wears a mask at all times due to how shy he is and that he hangs out in cemeteries.
Pokémon Shield also contains version-exclusive Pokémon like Larvitar and Goomy.
Pokémon Sword features a Fighting-type Gym Leader named Bea. According to her profile on the official Pokémon website, Bea is a prodigy in Galar karate (which kind of goes against the Great Britain theme that Galar is going for) and that she always remains level-headed in battle.
Pokémon Sword also contains version-exclusive Pokémon like Deino and Jangmo-o.
It's rare for the Pokémon series to reference the administrative personnel behind the Pokémon League, but it seems that they will play a big role in Pokémon Sword & Shield. The new Pokémon Sword & Shield trailer has revealed some of the key figures responsible for the Pokémon League in the Galar region.
Chairman Rose is the chairman of the Galar League and he was the one responsible for introducing the Dynamax feature into Gym battles. Chairman Rose was also the one responsible for endorsing Leon as the current Champion of the region.
Oleana is Chairman Rose's secretary and is also the vice president of his company, which means that she is the one in charge of running its day to day operations.
It's rare for a Pokémon game to introduce the management behind the Pokémon League, which suggests that Chairman Rose and Oleana will be important to the story. Smart money is on at least one of them being connected to the villainous team in the region.
The Dynamax transformations in Pokémon Sword & Shield were criticized by the fanbase when it was revealed that Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves would not be appearing in the game. The idea of a Pokémon increasing in size didn't seem as interesting from either a gameplay or visual standpoint to the fans.
It turns out that there is more to the Dynamax feature than anyone had realized, as certain Pokémon from the Galar region can undergo a specific transformation known as Gigantamaxing, which changes their form and gives them access to a new attack called a G-Max Move.
The three Galar region Pokémon that can Gigantamax are Drednaw (which stands upright and looks like a Godzilla-style monster), Corviknight (which takes on a red plumage and resembles Yveltal from Pokémon X & Y), and Alcremie, who turns into a giant cake.
Pokémon Sword & Shield will be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.
