Temtem — the upcoming creature-collecting MMO game — has just received a new trailer showing off several game mechanics that "tamers" will have to utilize if they hope to become a top tier competitor. These include breeding new Temtem, using the Synergy combat system, and hunting for Lumas.

Although Temtem pulls a lot of its content from the Pokémon playbook, the game is significantly different in a variety of ways. First and foremost is the combat system, which exclusively features 2v2 battles. Beyond that, the game employs a Stamina system which forces players to change up their attacks — stronger attacks use up more Stamina, and if Stamina runs out you'll begin to siphon off your own Temtem's health.

This new trailer puts a heavy emphasis on Synergy attacks, a system that add another layer of complexity to the battle system. By deploying two Temtem of complementary Type, you'll be able to amplify certain skills. Discovering these Synergy attacks is key to winning battles later in the story and will certainly play a large role in endgame content.

The trailer highlights another big adjustment, this one related to the breeding process. Unlike Pokémon, breeding new Temtem is transparent — that is to say, you'll know exactly what sort of "baby" Temtem you'll receive. This is a feature that should save tamers hours of their time, which can then be spend hunting down more powerful Temtem.

Speaking of which, players have a good reason to hunt down elusive Luma Temtem. These creatures are similar to Shiny Pokémon, but they are guaranteed to come with three maxed out Single Values. They also have a slightly different appearance from their non-Luma counterparts. In Temtem, it looks like Luma hunting will be a worthwhile process.

Temtem is set to enter Early Access on Steam on January 21st. It will "officially" release in 2021, however it is a completely playable game as-is. Our hands-on time with the game found it to be an incredibly enjoyable experience, and we're eager to dive back in for more.. Featuring a 20+ hour campaign, over 70 Temtem to collect, and a robust multiplayer system, Pokémon might finally have some stiff competition.
