Laura Bailey, professional voice actress and cast member on Critical Roleleft the Game Awards early this year so she could play Dungeons & Dragons with her friends.

Bailey was a nominee for Best Performance at the Game Awards 2019 for her role as Corporal Kait Diaz in Gears 5. Critical Role, which streams every Thursday at 7pm PST, happened to coincide with the awards ceremony and started right in the middle of it this year. A difficult choice had to be made – Bailey could sit through a few more hours of game trailers and acceptance speeches, or she could play everyone's favorite little blue tiefling, Jester Lavorre, instead.

Bailey tweeted before the stream or the Game Awards even started, letting the fans know that she wouldn't be showing up to Thursday night's game.

So it came as a pleasant surprise that not even an hour into the stream, Bailey waltzed onto Critical Role, dressed to the nines in the outfit she wore to the Game Awards. She joked that traffic wasn't bad at the moment and that she left the Game Awards because she heard that Sam Riegel, another cast member on Critical Role, had "touched" her dice (for those of you who are unaware, Laura Bailey is very particular about her dice hoard).

Mad respect to Laura for leaving the Game Awards to play some good old-fashioned D&D with her best friends. She is a shining example for gamers across the world. Ducking out of social situations to play games is a priority and we admire her for doing so. The dedication she has to her craft is one for the books.

Unfortunately (or I guess fortunately for her since it would have been really awkward if she hadn't been there), Laura Bailey did not win an award for Best Performance this year. We definitely missed out on the likely impromptu and very hilarious acceptance speech on the CR stream that would have been.

You can watch Critical Role every Thursday night at 7pm PST on Twitch.
