Garena, the company that distributes League of Legends in Southeast Asia and Taiwan through its Garena+ service, has launched a new event in which League players can unlock the Prestige Edition of the immensely popular K/DA skin for Akali through a gambling mechanic that can require up to 10,000 Riot Points, which equals around $70, in order to get the skin.

The event focuses on Akali, who misplaced a song for an upcoming concert with K/DA, the K-pop group of which Akali is a member alongside fellow champions Ahri, Evelynn and Kai'Sa. Helping Akali get the song back requires players to select one of nine different songs from a randomized board. One of the songs is the right one song the concert and unlocks the Prestige K/DA Akali skin.

If the wrong song is selected, players are rewarded with a random, lesser prize, such as a Hextech Chest or Key Fragment. When one of the nine songs has been selected, the board refreshes, and the player is given a 1-in-9 chance to select the correct song once again.

Selecting a song costs 90 RP (less than $1), while an additional mechanic allows players to eliminate a song from the board, increasing the chances of the K/DA Prestige skin appearing. This mechanic starts at 250 RP (about $2) to eliminate one song, but will ultimately cost 10,000 RP to eliminate eight songs and guarantee that the last song unlocks the skin.

Gambling mechanics have not been well received by gaming communities. The event has led to standard complaints from fans. Those who are nominally in favor of the mechanic have noted that, should a Masterwork Chest drop, which is far more likely than the Akali skin, 90 RP is a significant discount. Meanwhile, some Reddit users have reported receiving a number of cosmetic items for less than they would have cost to unlock before the event.
