League of Legends is a game with over ten seasons. The champions and the game change constantly to accommodate new playstyles, changes to the core mechanics, and even to update older champions who cannot keep up with how the game is currently played. Many champions are made so different and so unique that they are overcomplicated for those just arriving.

Many games with multiple characters choose to have some characters to be a bit easier to master, making the process of understanding the game less painful for new players. League of Legends does have some champions that are much easier to play than others, while still being fun and useful in Summoner's Rift.

Updated on September 20, 2021, by Juliet Childers: Even through reworks and changes, some champions remain the easiest for new players to pick up in League of Legends. This goes for any position: jungle, support, marksman, AP caster, etc. What's surprising is that these champions aren't weak or bad either. Of course, they can be easier to counter given their simpler kits.

Still, you gotta start somewhere, right? Here are the best League of Legends champions for beginners.

15 Ashe, The Frost Archer

League of Legends Ashe

There's a little something for everyone on this list, but let's start with one of the original characters in the game: Ashe. She's an AD marksman character whose attacks and abilities can slow down, reveal, or stun enemies. She also has an attack speed buff she can activate after a certain threshold.

The basicness of her kit is simultaneously her strength and weakness as a champion, so she needs a good lane partner or jungler for assistance. But if you're just learning how to AD carry, Ashe is a near-perfect option to start with.

14 Lux, The Lady Of Luminosity

League of Legends Lux skins

Similarly to Ashe, Lux might be where you want to start as either a Mid Lane player or support player in Bottom Lane. She has a stun, shield, aoe attack, and ranged ultimate. That makes her relatively safe to play in lane while offering some utility for teammates, as well.

The downfall of Lux is her lack of mobility and that she cannot do as explosive of damage as some of her AP counterparts. She's fantastic to use as a springboard into other, more complicated support characters or champions who take more strategy.

13 Gragas, The Rabble Rouser

League of Legends Gragas

The gregarious party-goer might seem like an odd choice for beginners, but it makes a ton of sense for a few reasons. Firstly, Gragas can go Top Lane, Mid Lane, or in the jungle and find success. His kit has built it crowd control, sustain, and ranged aoe attacks. Moreover, his ultimate can be a total gamechanger in team fights or when chasing down targets.

The only tricky part to Gragas is learning when to engage and how to itemize against specific matchups. Try him out in different roles to see where he works best for you.

12 Caitlyn, The Sheriff Of Piltover

League of Legends Caitlyn

Caitlyn is another fantastic beginner AD carry champion who has more mobility than Ashe does. Her E ability can be used to close gaps or create them while her traps are self-explanatory in their usefulness. She also pairs well with a variety of support champions to suit aggressive or passive playstyles.

If you are a beginner looking to rank up quickly, trying out Caitlyn isn't a bad idea. She's reliable, a fantastic split pusher, and can dish out serious damage. Just don't expect her to win any duels you get into.

11 Annie, The Dark Child

League-of-Legends-Annie-1

Another original character, Annie's kit is one of the most intuitive in the game -- especially after revamping her shield. But one of the coolest features of her kit is that, after using 4 abilities, Annie's next ability will stun the target. This can be used on any of her offensive abilities to great effect with her ultimate being the best option for teamfights.

Though often seen in Mid Lane, some might consider Annie as an offensive support option instead. Itemize her properly for utility and damage output to make it so the other team can't ignore you while also still protecting your AD carry.

10 Seraphine, The Starry-Eyed Songstress

Seraphine showing all her singing glory

The Starry-Eyed Songstress is one of the most recent characters, and also a very powerful one. Seraphine can hear the souls of other people. She managed to turn chaos into a symphony, by singing to the world as a kind response to the music she's constantly given.

As a Champion in Summoner's Rift, her skills synergize with one another. She does ok in both mid-lane and in the bottom lane being support, although she might be better in one of those two. She is easy to use and just pressing all her skill is enough to make her do something useful.

9 Garen, The Might Of Demacia

Garen swinging his broadsword

The Might of Demacia is pretty much the usual fantasy Paladin. Shiny armor, righteous behavior, unbreakable morals, and a lot of skills with a sword. Garen is big, powerful, and persistent. A Paragon of might and morals to the Demacian forces.

As a Champion in Summoner's Rift, he is one of the simplest characters. In order to play Garen effectively, spin to win and then retreat to regain health. Repeat until the adversary is at low health, then drop a giant sword on their head.

8 Darius, The Hands Of Noxus

Darius swinging his Axe

Darius was created at first to be some sort of counterpart to Garen. The Hard Hand of Noxus is one of the scariest champions in League of Legends, both in-game and in lore. He is referred to as the most battle-hardened and also the most feared Noxian commander. He is also the tallest Noxian champion.

Because of his great damage and simple gameplay, this is a great champion for beginners. Drag, attack, and spin. A simple combo like this is more than enough to make anyone scared if caught in this sequence.

7 Malphite, The Shard Of The Monolith

Malphite smashing soldiers with his gigantic size

The Shard of the Monolith is a gigantic living creature made of stone. Malphite is trying to bring his order to a world he perceives as dominated by chaos. When it comes to how he is a playable character, his gameplay has been pretty much the same since he was released.

Malphite is pretty much a walking ultimate. That's the reason someone picks this champion. It is a known fact that this is the whole reason why this rock is feared. So just try to stay alive until a team fight starts. When it does, make sure to knock up as many adversaries as possible. This might not be one of the best Ultimates in League of Legends, but it gets pretty close.

6 Malzahar, The Prophet Of The Void

Malzahar and his voidlings

This is one of the coolest mages in League of Legends. Malzahar, the Prophet of the Void is some sort of reference to characters that embrace the reality of a weird world in Lovecraftian stories.

In Summoner's Rift, Malzahar is one of those champions that barely need a Summoner. Malefic Visions combined with Void Swarm lets players farm without even being good at last hitting. All that players need to learn is how to hit his silence. The rest is just pointing, clicking, and waiting for the enemy to die.

5 Master Yi, The Wuju Bladesman

Master Yi showing his skills with a sword

The Wuju Bladesman is the typical zen sword master who avoids violence. Until it is the last resource to be used in a given situation, that is. Master Yi ascended to a new level of sword mastery through the powers of practice and meditation.

That being said, his gameplay has changed a few times, but not on its core. Master Yi is a champion who depends on his basic attacks. His Meditate gives him some extra durability in the lane or jungle, and his Alpha Strike allows him to farm or get closer to the target. Regarding the rest of his skills, just press everything and click on the target. Master Yi

4 Miss Fortune, The Bounty Hunter

Sarah Fortune, or Miss Fortune, is a known beauty of the seas. Although she is known for her looks, people who know her ruthlessness fear more than they admire her. She is the kind of person who gets the job done no matter what. Those in Port City who want to stay away from her are probably wise.

Miss Fortune comes from an era when the Attack Damage Carries were not complicated characters. Her kit hasn't significantly changed since she came out. She has a slowing area of effect, an attack that hits two creatures lined up, and an AOE ultimate. The rest is just last hitting and positioning.

3 Nasus, The Curator Of The Sands

Nasus casting Wither

The Curator of the Sands is one of the coolest concepts in League of Legends. An Ascended from Ancient Shurima, Nasus is as powerful as he is intelligent. He returned from exile once Shurima rose again, and vowed to make sure it would never fall a second time.

Nasus becomes relevant time and time again when the meta calls for very long matches. As long as players make sure to use Syphon Strike to farm damage, Nasus is the simplest character. His passive life-steal will keep him alive in the lane, and time will make him super strong.

2 Sejuani, The Fury Of The North

Sejuani riding her boar

This champion has always been a badass in concept. She is a warrior from Freljord who rides an enormous drüvask boar and uses a mace as a weapon. Also called the Fury of the North, Sejuani is a war mother known for being one of the most feared warriors of the Winter's Claw clan.

The way someone plays Sejuani is very straightforward. Her ultimate is an enormous Area of Effect skill shot that can stun multiple enemies. She has a dash, immunity to slow when out of combat, and can slow targets by attacking them. Just get close, cast everything, and attack.

1 Trundle, The Troll King

Trundle gazing at the horizon and waiting for his next victim

Hailing from the Freljord, the Troll King is one of the most menacing champions in the Fields of Justice. An enormous creature with a knack for violence, Trundle enjoys bullying others and bending them into servants by bashing them with his club.

Trundle's skills are anything but hard to use. Slow the target, get close real quick, bite and auto-attack until your target is dead. Trundle's gimmick is his ability to steal an enemy's status, making him suddenly way more dangerous. Since his skills are not skill-shots, it is quite easy to use Trundle effectively.
