The newer players are in League of Legends, the easiest it is for them to see some really different skin and wonder where that comes from. There are so many skins that became unavailable in the shop but still exist in the game that it is not unusual to suddenly play with someone with an impossible to get skin.

Some are special rewards from playing during a specific season, others were a reward for reaching gold or above. Whatever the case is, League of Legends has always promoted ways to make players feel special by grabbing one of those skins that will, within a few years, become the topic of a conversation about rare skins.

Updated by Gonçalo Santos on March 4, 2024: MOBAs are usually ever-changing games that keep getting new content to keep people playing. With over 165 champions released, League of Legends takes that to the next level. If you don't play LoL for a few months, when you're back, there will already be a ton of new stuff that you don't know.

Regardless of that, Riot Games have actually kept League pretty consistent when it comes to skin rarity. Even in more recent systems, like Mythic skins, almost nothing that's released now ever becomes entirely unavailable later. This just makes the original rare skins even rarer, by comparison. This is our updated list of the rarest skins in League of Legends.

10 Pax Jax and Pax Sivir

Pax Jax and Pax Sivir Splash Arts In League Of Legends

Cardboard Tube Samurai And Tron

Pax skins are some of the rarest you can find in League of Legends. Much like another one you'll see later down the list, they were only acquired through skin codes that were given to people who attended PAX events where Riot was present. Obviously, not everyone who got the codes used them, so you'd guess that there might still be some lying around.

While that's likely the case, they're now useless. Skin codes were disabled by Riot Games back in 2014, so the only way to get your hands on one of these skins now is if you have an account that already owns them.

9 Black Alistar

league of Legends - Black Alistar is just a pallet swap

One Hell Of A Flex

This skin is exceptionally rare. It is not surprising that one of the Champions with the most skins would have an extremely rare one. Not only can it only be found with those who have been playing League of Legends from before Season 1, but it was also part of a bundle for those who paid for the game when it was first coming out. League of Legends was never a paid game, but it did sell pre-order bundles to raise funds.

During its first release, the skin was not automatically added to the account. In fact, it seems that these skins were granted via codes. Those skins could be found for sale and there are those who made a few hundred dollars by selling them.

8 Young Ryze

league of Legends - Young Ryze is the new version of Human Ryze

Formerly Known As Human Ryze

Young Ryze is quite a fun name, because this is actually one of the first skins ever made. Released in 2009, this skin was nothing more than a pallet swap. This is another of those skins that let you know for how long someone has been playing League of Legends.

Human Ryze was a skin granted to those who pre-ordered League of Legends and therefore was not available on the game's shop, which made it an ultra-rare skin nowadays.

7 Judgment Kayle

league of Legends - The new splash art and skins are completely different from what they were

Were You Around In Season 1?

The rarest skins are usually the ones that were available during Season 1 or before it. The reasoning is simple, League of Legends has only grown since then, and therefore, there were fewer people who could have taken exclusive skins from the first season.

That is the case with Judgment Kayle. This is a skin that was made available for those who played throughout Season 1. The skin has been updated a few times and it is fair to say that nowadays it looks completely different from its original concept.

6 King Rammus

league of Legends - King Rammus is clearly an homage to Bowser

Definitely Not Bowser

This is a skin that is so rare that many players have never seen it. King Rammus is a clear reference to Bowser and is also a skin that was only available before League of Legends was publicly available. This skin was Riot's way to thank the players who participated in the closed beta back in 2009 back when Rammus was not underrated as he is today.

Back then, not many people cared much about League of Legends. This was not even a game that most MOBA players believed to be great. Those who tried it out, though, were rewarded with what now is an ultra-rare look for Rammus.

5 Pax Twisted Fate

The King Of Pax Skins

This skin is considered rare because of how circumstantial it was to get it. This Skin is also one of those that were only available in 2009. But there is so much more that makes it rare. Not only the players had to have attended the Penny Arcade Expo in 2009, but they also had to be the first 20,000 attendees.

Needless to say that nowadays, it is nearly impossible to see this skin around, making it one of the rarest ever skins in League of Legends.

4 Silver Kayle

league of Legends - Silver Kayle's Chinese Splash Art

Worthy Of A Collector

Silver Kayle is an ultra-rare skin in League of Legends that was part of the collector's edition. Apparently, there are no more than 65,000 people who own this skin. This is less than 1% of the League of Legends community nowadays.

Silver Kayle was handled as a bonus to those who pre-ordered the game in 2009. What makes this skin even harder to find is the fact that Riot disabled the codes that would unlock it back in 2014, making it impossible for anyone to suddenly show up with one of the rarest skins ever in League of Legends.

3 Triumphant Ryze

league of Legends - Triumphant Ryze's Splash Art

The Skin Of A Tournament Winner

Some skins have a very limited time to be acquired and never return. Some might return later, but rarely. But there are skins that are available for a long time but are hard to get anyway. That was the case for this skin. In order to get a Triumphant Ryze, players would have to win a Tournament sponsored by Riot back in 2010.

Although there were many tournaments handing out this skin, and there are some that even today reward players with it, it is still pretty rare to find a Triumphant Ryze in Summoner's Rift.

2 UFO Corki

league of Legends - UFO Corki feels like a reference to Robotnik

A Gift From 2010

This is one of those skins that rewarded players for showing up early. This skin was only possible to get for players who had a League of Legends account made before January 14th, 2010.

UFO Corki is a quite interesting and different skin when compared to other early skins of League of Legends. Unlike most back then, which were generally pallet swaps, UFO Corki had a different 3D model. Being one of the very few skins that would have significant changes to the character in comparison to skins that would only change the textures.

1 Early Victorious Skins

League of Legends - Triumphant Jarvan IV

A True Sign Of Victory

Jarvan IV was such a different character when he came out, although he is still considered a strong and underrated support champion. He was a strong, popular champion. That was most likely the reason behind Riot choosing him to be the first-ever champion to have a Victorious Skin.

Victorious skins have the unique aspect of being the only consistent skin releases that will eventually become quite rare, depending on how long the game actually lasts. These are only acquirable by finishing Gold or above during a given season. Although J4 will always be the rarest due to being from Season 1, anything before Season 4 is likely to be quite rare now.
