Out of all the Zelda games, Majora’s Mask is probably the strangest and creepiest. There’s so much disturbing imagery going on in this game that it’s become pretty iconic among Zelda fans and gamers. Between the crazy characters, the unusual story, and the strange and creepy themes, there’s a lot going on with this game. And this is one of those games that may not be the best for young kids. It has a lot of freaky elements going on.

This game has also had a polarizing effect on fans. Some love the game for its unique story and imagery, while others didn’t like the repetitive gameplay. For a lot of fans, you either loved it or you hated it. (Personally, while I liked the crazy elements, I didn’t like the gameplay very much.) But no matter how you felt about the game, we can all agree it’s a very memorable game that left an impression on every Zelda fan.

But no game is perfect, and Majora’s Mask is no exception. Since there’s so much going on in this game, there are a lot of crazy elements in the game that don’t make a lot of sense.

Considering this game is surrounded by a lot of mystery and strangeness, it’s not surprising that there are quite a few mysteries that never got explained in the game. So here are 20 mysteries and plot holes that never get addressed in Majora’s Mask. Prepared to be confused!

Think we missed some good mysteries? Make sure to let us know in the comments section below!

20 Suspicious Origins

Considering this creepy mask is the title of the game and the main driving force behind everything happening in this game, you’d think we’d know more about the actual mask. All we learn in the game is that the Happy Mask Salesman had it and the Skull Kid took it.

We have gotten a bit more information based on the Majora’s Mask manga which is that the mask came from a creature called Majora. It’s also reported to be worshipped by an ancient race. But we still don’t know a lot about it. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding this crazy mask, which does seem pretty fitting for the mask.

19 She’s Seen Things

Via: boards.fireden.net

When you first meet Romani, she asks for your help in protecting her cows against what she calls “Them,” which turns out to be aliens. Yep, there are aliens in a Zelda game, and they never explain why that’s a thing. Considering Zelda is a mostly fantasy-based game, having aliens in a game is a little weird.

Even crazier is if you fail, Romani gets captured by these aliens. She does show up again on the 3rd Day, but she seems... off. What happened to her? Who were these guys? Why were they after cows? What did they do to poor Romani? It’s never explained, so we’re just left wondering.

18 How Did This Mask Come To Be?

Via: pixiv.net (kanokawa)

Out of all the masks in the games, there are only three that will give you a full body transformation (Well, four, if we’re counting the Fierce Deity mask, but we’ll talk about that later.) And with the Goron and Zora mask, we get that you’re transforming into the characters you’ve met.

So who do you change into when you put on the Deku mask?

But here’s the question; what about the Deku mask? If there’s a soul attached to the mask, whose is it? There’s a theory that the Deku Scrub you turn into is the Butler’s son, and there’s a lot of evidence supporting that. But it is a bit of a mystery that doesn’t really get addressed.

17 I’m Seeing Double

Via: zeldauniverse.net

There are a lot of strange things happening in Majora’s Mask. One thing that’s a bit subtle is the fact that many of the characters you meet in this game are very similar to characters in Ocarina of Time. In fact, a lot of the residents in Termina look almost exactly like other characters in Hyrule.

Why is this a thing? The easy explanation was that the creators just wanted to use the same character models and save time, since Majora’s Mask came out pretty soon after Ocarina of Time. There’s also the statement that Termina is a parallel world to Hyrule. But it’s still really weird, and Link doesn’t really acknowledge it in the game.

In Ikana Valley, you can help a girl named Pamela and her father, who seems to have been cursed as a Gibdo. By playing the Song of Healing, you cure the father and get the Gibdo mask. And you get a very tearful reunion between the father and daughter.

But here’s the question. What happened to turn the father into a Gibdo? Was it an experiment gone wrong? How long was he like that? And what was he trying to do in the first place? There are a lot of questions surrounding these two that never get answered. Oh well, at least they seem happier now.

15 Seriously, What Is Up With That Moon?

via: hdwallpapers.com

Throughout the game, the moon is a consistent presence, always staring down on you with that creepy face. There’s always that dread and threat of the moon crashing down on you. And if you let the time run out, the moon does come crashing down, destroying everything.

What's the story behind this freaky moon?

But here’s the question: why was the moon crashing down? Was the moon always here in Termina, or is this a recent development? And why does it have that creepy face? There are some hints that Majora’s Mask was controlling the moon, but there hasn’t really been an explanation regarding this crazy moon. I guess we’ll never know.

14 How Did I Get Here?

Via: kikidoodle.tumblr.com

We know that Termina is a parallel world to Hyrule, or an alternate dimension, thanks to Nintendo. And the game itself does describe Termina as another world. It does explain some things like why a lot of the characters look like ones in Ocarina of Time.

But how did Link get to this world? He was just walking in the woods when the Skull Kid ambushes him. Did he go through some kind of portal when he chased the Skull Kid? Did the Skull Kid send him to Termina? It’s not really certain how Link actually got to this different world. Maybe it was just fate. Or maybe it was bad luck. Who knows?

13 Is He Stuck Like That Forever?

Via: nekoloveletter.deviantart.com

Majora’s Mask is known for its many side quests. And one of the pretty memorable ones is the one surrounding Kafei and Anju. These two were set to get married soon, but Kafei goes missing. You find out that he’s been cursed by the Skull Kid to look like a child, and then his wedding mask was stolen. The two eventually reunite if you help Kafei get his mask back.

But does Kafei ever get restored to his original form, or is he stuck as a child forever? And if so, what does that mean for Kafei and Anju’s relationship? The game does imply that he gets changed back, but you still have to wonder.

12 Who Is This Guy?

Via: pinterest.com

One of the biggest side quests in Majora’s Mask is the quest where you get the Fierce Deity Mask. When you get inside the moon, you find some other kids wandering around. If you do their side quests and give away a bunch of your masks, you will get the Fierce Deity Mask, which transforms you into this demigod type of person (basically older Link with white hair).

Where did the Fierce Diety even come from?

But the question is, who was the Fierce Deity? Was he some powerful warrior that lived long ago? Was he some type of demigod? Why does he look a lot like Link? We don’t get much of an explanation. The manga does give us hints about him, but we still don’t know that much.

11 A Dubious Acquisition

Via: fluxmage.deviantart.com

There’s a lot about the Happy Mask Salesman that’s a bit strange and mysterious. He’s a bit cryptic and odd, and the fact that he seems to know what’s going one when no one else does is a bit bizarre.

But one mystery surrounding him is how he got the Majora’s Mask in the first place. All that he said is that he acquired it, but he doesn’t go into any detail after that. So how did he manage to get ahold of this cursed mask? And how does he know so much about it? Just who is this guy? Well, he’s not telling us.

10 How Is This A Thing?

Via: aftertaster7.deviantart.com

Probably one of the strangest characters you’ll meet in this game is the one in bathroom. If you go into the bathroom at the hotel, you’ll find a hand popping out of the toilet, and a voice asking you for paper. Now, this is a reoccurring character from past games, so it is a little reference.

But the question remains: just who is this guy? Why is he in the toilet? Does he ever leave? There so much weirdness going on here that I don’t know where to start. And this guy is never explained any time he shows up. (At least the one in Skyward Sword is a ghost hand, so that makes a bit more sense, somehow).

9 This Drink Is Not For The Youth

Via: pinterest.com (Fatima Elfasi)

Throughout Majora’s Mask, you can get milk. In fact, milk is so popular that there’s a whole bar that sells it. And there’s a type of milk called Mystery Milk. But there are a lot of questions surrounding this beverage, mainly what on earth is in it?

There's something weird about this milk.

There are a lot of implications that Mystery Milk has a little something... extra that’s not suitable for kids. Romani’s older sister has told her she’s not allowed to drink it, and there is a whole place dedicated to milk, which is a bit suspicious. But nothing has been confirmed. So, we may never know just what is in Mystery Milk.

8 That’s Not How Healing Works

Via: artisticgamemaster.deviantart.com

One of the songs you learn in this game is the Song of Healing. This song lets you help tortured souls, and through this song, you can obtain different masks. It’s how you gain the three main masks that let you transform into different people.

But here’s the question: how does the Song of Healing work? Through this song, you can basically infuse someone’s soul into a mask. How is that possible? How does one song do such a crazy thing? I guess we can just say it’s magic, but there’s still some mystery in there, and one that never really gets explained.

7 Where Exactly Is Termina?

Via: pixiv.net (muse)

Termina is a pretty interesting place, full of people that look oddly familiar, some crazy monsters, and the impending doom of the apocalypse hanging over you (literally). But there’s a slight problem with Termina: where is it?

As far as locations go, it’s not super clear where Termina is. Nintendo has confirmed that it’s a parallel world to Hyrule, so we know it’s not actually anywhere in Hyrule, but beyond that, we still don’t know a lot. Are there other lands in Termina? How do you get to Termina from Hyrule? How did the whole moon apocalypse thing happen? We may never know.

6 Do We Even Want To Know With This Guy?

Via: pinterest.com

You get a lot of interesting and unique characters in Majora’s Mask, and one memorable character is Tingle. This guy is so enamored with fairies that he’s determined to become one. So, he wears a green body suit and wanders around looking for fairies. Yeah, I don’t really get it either.

Seriously, what is going on in Tingle's head?

There’s a lot about Tingle we don’t know. Where did he come from? Why is he so obsessed with fairies? And the game never really explains anything about him other than he thinks Link is the greatest because he looks like a fairy to him. This nut is just as mysterious as he is crazy.

5 A Gone People

Via: spire-iii.deviantart.com

The Ikana Valley is probably one of the darker places in Termina. Everything about this place is oozing in dread and mortality. And as you travel through this place, you come across the people of Ikana... or what’s left of them. According to the skeletons you meet, the people of this valley were wiped out a long time ago.

But what exactly happened to these people? We know they’re all gone now, but what exactly happened? There’s been implications that they were wiped out by the Garo, but nothing has been confirmed. And what’s left of these people don’t seem to be talking about their demise. I guess we’ll never find out.

4 This Temple Is Just Freaky

Via: audgreen.deviantart.com

Majora’s Mask is known for having the fewest dungeons out of all the Zelda games, but that doesn’t make the dungeons any less crazy. And the last dungeon is probably the craziest and most memorable. The Stone Tower Temple has a lot of interesting elements, including the fact that you can invert it. But there’s something strange about this dungeon.

While the other dungeons have a pretty good explanation for their existence, the Stone Tower Temple is a bit more mysterious. There are also lots of implications that the people who built this temple worshiped some malevolent gods. Just what is going on with this dungeon? How does the whole inversion thing work? What is up with this dungeon?

3 Is This Even Possible?

Via: spiritleaf7.deviantart.com

When you confront Majora’s Mask, it transports you to inside the moon. And there’s a lot of weird stuff going on. First of the all the inside of the moon is portrayed to be this field with a tree, which is pretty strnage. And there are a bunch of children wandering around in masks.

How do you get a field inside a moon?

So, here’s the question: what exactly is going on with this place? Who are these other kids? Why are they wearing different masks? Why does the inside of a moon look like a beautiful field? This whole situation is very weird and we never really get an explanation for it. I get everything surrounding Majora’s Mask is full of mystery, but this is ridiculous.

2 Who Are These Guys?

Via: narutoxhinatafan.deviantart.com

Ikana Valley is full of interesting and slightly terrifying characters and creatures. And one interesting group is the Garo. They were a race that lived long ago and fought the people of Ikana Valley. Even after they were gone, their ghosts have remained and they pose a pretty big threat.

But what exactly happened to the Garo? Why are they so dedicated to their duties even after passing? And what caused their civilization to crumble? What is up with these crazy ghosts? We never really learn much about them, so we don’t know their full story. And I guess that’s the way it’s going to stay.

1 Did They Mourn?

Via: pinterest.com (Alison)

In order to get the Goron and Zora masks, you come across Darmani and Miku; both who died. By playing the Song of Healing, you get their masks and can take on their appearances. And when you interact with the other Gorons and Zoras, they talk to you like you’re Darmani or Miku.

But here’s the question: do the friends and family of these two ever find out that Darmani and Miku are actually gone for good? And if they did, how did they react? Either way, it’s a pretty sad scenario, and you can’t help but feel bad for their friends and family.
