The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom surrounds Link with some old friends to help him on his journey to defeat The Demon King. You'll find your allies, known as sages, spread across Hyrule, so it's up to you to recruit them and utilize their unique powers on your journey.

You'll need to complete their corresponding Temples to gain each sage's Vow and the ability to summon them on demand. Once that's finished, a blue spectral version of your friend will follow you around, assisting you with their unique abilities at the touch of a button. Each sage's power is useful, but you'll find yourself using some far more often than others.

5 Yunobo – Sage Of Fire

Yunobo is not a bad companion, but unfortunately, somebody has to be the least useful. In fact, Yunobo's cannon ability is actually quite amazing, which is a testament to the overall quality of the sage abilities in Tears of the Kingdom.

When activated, Yunobo curls up into a ball and launches himself in the chosen direction, exploding on impact with the first surface he hits – wall or foe. Try it out against both individuals and groups of enemies.

In addition to the possible combat applications, this ability is useful for clearing boulders from your path or setting something on fire without flint, fire fruit, or anything else.

4 Sidon – Sage Of Water

The beloved Prince Sidon offers a more unusual option than the other sages – no, it's not a romance quest. His power covers you in a veil of water, protecting you from hits until you attack; Doing so sends it out as a powerful magic orb. It's a unique defensive and offensive pivot.

The shield will guard against any attack, regardless of its power, so it comes in handy against bosses with extremely powerful attacks, like the Gleeoks.

3 Mineru – Sage Of Spirit

Riju's power works anywhere – indoors or out – and has a multitude of different uses, from clearing groups of Gloom enemies to breaking boulders in your path. As a weapon, Riju's lightning has almost no equal and is perhaps the biggest upgrade to your combat prowess, along with Mineru.

Make Riju your priority once you've completed your first temple, as you'll find her power comes in handy throughout your journey across Hyrule.

1 Tulin – Sage Of Wind

Tulin of Rito Village takes the cake as the best sage ability in Tears of the Kingdom with his fabulous gust of wind ability. While in the air, you can activate this ability to propel you forward with a massive speed boost, increasing your distance covered.

It's hard to imagine getting around Hyrule without this ability, as it will make massive gaps easily traversable if you have enough height to start your jump.

There will be several occasions where you will find yourself tapping for Tulin, but the ability is disabled because you're in a shrine or town. When you use an ability often enough to become second nature, you know it's something special.
