For just a moment, let us all go back to when we were kids. It’s a rainy autumn Saturday morning and it’s much too cold for us to be told to go play outside with the other kids. No, today is an inside day. So we get our bowl of cereal, walk into the living room, wrap ourselves up in our favorite blanket, and prep the GameCube for playtime. The Legend of Zelda theme fills the living room and the next few hours of our lives will be entirely consumed by trying our best to help Link on his quest. There is a notebook filled with cheats our friends told us about beside us and we are ready to unlock everything we can before our mom tells us to get off the television.

Ah, what a lovely memory. One of the best things about playing games as a child was that list of cheats, unlockables, hidden items, and secrets that guided players through their favorite games. Well, I am here to act as that list. No longer will the people of the internet have to scroll through dozens of walkthroughs, watch hundreds of let’s plays with breathy commentators, or rent those game guides from the local GameStop. For I am here to provide the gamers of the internet with an amalgamated version of that precious information. So, without further ado, here are 25 tips and tricks that will help you navigate the cartoony and colorful world of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

25 Save Room For Seconds

via: youtube.com

I have always been someone who could reread books, rewatch films, and replay games until the power went out, without boredom. But very few games are built with replayability in mind. Except for Wind Waker, that is. In fact, there are several features and unlockables hidden within the game that remain completely inaccessible until a player's second pass through the story. When you finish your first playthrough, a special save slot will open up for you. Using that save slot will allow you to play the unlocked version of the game: complete with extra outfits, skills, and interacts for Link to use on his travels.

24 One Shot Kalle Demos

Via YouTube

Are you ready for this mind-blowing tip that I am about to deliver to you? Hold on to your socks because this one is a doozy. How would you feel if I told you that there was a way for you to one shot Kalle Demos? If you use that handy-dandy boomerang to give those pesky vines a good snipping and then pour water on the little plant which the vine trimming will have knocked out of place, you will have yourself one easily defeated boss. Didn’t even have to break a sweat.

23 Heal The Withered Trees

Via YouTube

If you’re a nature loving person like me, you will be delighted to know that you can heal those poor withered trees that are littered throughout Wind Waker. In fact, doing so will activate the Korok Tree Spirit Quest, granted you have some bottles handy. What you have to do is fill those bottles up with spring water from Forest Haven and use it to revive each and every one of those withered trees. If you are successful, you will be rewarded with a piece of heart for your troubles.

22 Defeat The Big Octos

Via Portforward

I’m not the biggest fan of taking down the big and beautiful creatures of the deep, but taking down those Big Octos will give both Link and the person controlling him a lovely reward, so it’s unfortunately necessary. There are six of these delightful ocean creatures scattered throughout the game and defeating each and every one of them will provide Link with beautiful and worthwhile rewards. This Big Octos can be found in The Seven Star Isles, near Tingle Island, by the Fire Mountain, at the Private Oasis, off the shore of the Diamond Steppe Island, and at the Two-Eye Reef.

21 Unearth Every Chart

Via Zelda Dungeon

Travelling through the numerous worlds that exist in the Zelda games in order to collect and gather each individual item can be both incredibly fun and taxing. But you know what would be so much more fun? If you knew exactly where each and every single item you were looking for was before you even pressed Start. There are 10 charts that are hidden throughout the game (check the Wiki page for a complete list) and here are the locations of a select few, just for you. The Ghost Ship Chart can be found inside a hidden hole under Diamond Steppe Island. The Great Fairy Chart can be found in Treasure Chest #41 while the Light Ring Chart can be found in Treasure Chest #21.

20 Unstoppable Pigs

Via Cubed Gamer

Neither Link nor the animals of the Zelda worlds are particularly fond of each other. But the pigs of Wind Waker are occupying a whole nother world of anti-Link fueled aggression. Because this time, the pigs can fight back. If Link is as bold (or as dim-witted) to pick on a pig numerous times all of the other pigs in that area will come to their friend's defense. The pigs will continue on this rampage until they are lead to a body of water or Link has the good sense to take a hike and leave their area entirely.

19 Hero's Charm For Everyone

Via YouTube

Being considered a charming person (or video game character) can have its advantages. But imagine how profitable being both heroic and charming could be. Well, imagine no longer because I am here to tell you how you can get your hands on a bit of hero’s charm yourself. First, you must obtain the Cabana Deed (which will be bestowed upon you via the schoolteacher). Next what you’re going to want to do is collect 40 Joy Pendants and gift them to the aforementioned school teacher. Who will, then, gift you with the infamous hero’s charm.

18 Time Controls The Sky

Via BlazeKick

Okay, this one is really cool. Are you ready for it? It turns out that the sky which hovers above Link throughout the game can and will change to reflect the internal clock of the GameCube. If the game is played during what the GameCube has determined as daylight hours then the in-game sky will reflect that and players will get to enjoy a lovely light blue sky. If you choose to sneak a game at night, you will be greeted with a delightfully dark and starry landscape.

17 Swiftly Master The Waves

Via Expert Game Reviews

Sailing can be tremendously hard work. What if there was a sail that detected and accounted for changes in wind powers for you? That way, you could just lay back and enjoy the ride? The thing that you are looking for, my friend, is called the ‘Swift Sail’ and it can be won at the Auction House after the Dragon Roost Cavern has been completed. Pro Tip: Bid at least 10% higher than the current highest bid every 10 or so seconds until the Auction is over. It won’t guarantee that the sail falls into your hands but it will greatly increase your chances.

16 Gohdan Can't Touch This

Via YouTube

Boss fights can be an absolute nightmare to navigate and some battles can have players begging for any tips and tricks that they can get their hands on. Have you ever wanted to speed run right through that fight with the big bad floating boss that is Gohdan? Well, before you take a real crack at him, you’re going to have to incapacitate those hands; or else you run the risk of being quickly eliminated. But if you stay in the doorway while fighting Gohdan, his sausage fingers cannot reach you and you will be able to safely destroy him from a distance.

15 Send Tingle Into A Rage

Via YouTube

Sometimes it’s just nice to mess about with the creatures that exist within a game. Cause a little mayhem, do a little damage, and just let your mischief flag fly. If that sort of thing tickles your fancy, allow me to teach you how to mess with the Tingle. You see, the Tingle does not like it when people bug at his pretty golden statues. Smash them with your sword, throw them as best as you can, send them to the bottom of the sea… each and every kind of Tingle statue related mischief will cause the poor lad to scold you, scream lunacies, and he will even go as far as dropping bombs on Link.

14 Uncover The Secret Caves

Via Zeldas Dungeon

Secret caves are one of the best parts of exploration based video games. I mean, you think that you’re done exploring the entire world and then you stumble across an entirely new place filled with treasure, experience, and beautiful scenery. There is a unique secret cave which can be found on each and every island in the game The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker as well as bonus caves which can be found at Fire Mountain, Ice Ring Isle, and Pawprint Isle as well. These caves all offer unique rewards at completion and I would advise all players, old and new, to explore each and every one of them.

13 Living In Colour

Via Zelda Dungeon

Black and White photography can be aesthetically pleasing and beautiful, but there is just something about color that adds a little punch to any given photo. If you want Link to enjoy capturing color-filled photos of the world around him through his Pictobox, travel to the house which resembles your camera. Next, the owner of said house will request you take pictures of several things around the home as well as asking you to get him a bottle filled with fireflies. Once these tasks have been completed, black and white photos will become a thing of the past.

12 Major Fairy Upgrade

via: youtube.com

Sometimes the mythical creatures of the world are gracious enough to lend us a helping hand and aid us poor mortals as we trudge through our lives. The fairies of the Wind Waker world are gracious enough beings to reward Link with various upgrades, should he ever need them. These upgrades mainly focus around expanding Link’s inventory limits so that he can cart around more objects with him. However, these fairies do not give away their upgrades for free. Link must accomplish a specific set of tasks which all require specific tools before searching the Great Sea for each fairy and their upgrades.

11 The Return Of Majora's Mask

Via Rebrn

Oh boy, I sure do love me a good easter egg. And Nintendo loves referencing itself more than a narcissist telling a lengthy story, so any given Legend of Zelda game is bound to be filled to the brim with references to other games in its series as well as other games from the same parent company. For example, did you notice that in the Nintendo Gallery Room four masks from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask can be seen hanging behind Garlov’s desk?

10 Stealing Zelda's Heart

Via Deviant Art

Running out of health mid-battle is one of the worst things that can happen to you whilst playing a video game. Picture this: you’re facing off with a boss and you are literal moments away from winning the game. But you get knocked around a few times and now your health is nearly depleted and you are one hit away from losing. Well, in Wind Waker, your trusty pal Zelda can help stave off your untimely demise for a few more turns if you know how to use her. When facing off with Ganondorf, shoot your hookshot at Zelda and she will send an extra heart your way.

9 Wherefore Art Thou, Chu-Chu?

Via Piranha Zone

Like most things in The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, the location of the twenty-three blue chu-chus can be found on twenty-two of the islands scattered through the explorable world. It is important to note that the blue chu-chus will only ever be located in highly visible outdoor areas. They also rarely appear on any islands which can be considered significant in any way. Some islands which house these collectible creations are Crescent Moon Island (which houses two,) Pawprint Island (which houses the largest collection of green and red chu-chus as well,) and the Angular Isles.

8 Skip To The Next Ledge

Via Zelda Dungeon

Traveling through intricate worlds can be exhausting. But the worst part of any game is when you fall from the highest ledge (after spending nearly an hour climbing to the very top, I might add) in an attempt to jump to the next platform so that you can get those last collectibles and then progress to the next part of the game. What would you do if I told you that there was a way to guarantee that you would make it to that next ledge? As long as a rope is present, that is. Press A immediately after Link begins swinging on the rope and Link will be automatically transported to the next ledge.

7 Discover The Tingle Statues

Via Zeldapedia

First things first, if you want to find the location of each and every Tingle statue make sure that you have a Game Boy Advance connected to your GameCube. Once that has been secured, check out your Tingle Turner as each statues location will be marked with a big red question mark. If you drop on Tingle Bomb directly on top of the question mark, that statues location will be revealed. Collecting each and every statue will entitle you to a hefty reward that is definitely worth all of the effort.

6 Unlimited Rupees

Via YouTube

Easy money is one of those things that is simply appealing to everyone, no matter who they are. So, without further ado, are you ready to learn how to secure yourself some ridiculously easy rupees in Wind Waker. The first thing you have to do is break the jar on the left side of the door leading to the boss room at the wind temple. Once the jar's bounty has been collected, use the magic cauldron to teleport back to the location of the very first jar at that temple. Return to the boss door jar and it will have refilled for you. Lather, rinse, repeat, and enjoy your easy rupees.
