The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's version of Hyrule may seem idyllic, but players know that, for Link, it's anything but dreamlike. With all manner of enemies and environmental hazards blocking his route to the four Divine Beasts, aiding princess Zelda in her fight against Calamity Ganon is no small feat.

Despite all that, there's no length to which Link won't go, and, from braving the mysteries of the Lost Woods to sneaking into the female-only Gerudo Town, he's proven his diligence time and time again. What does he get for his efforts? Why, memes, of course.

10 In-Flight Meal

One of the best things about Breath of the Wild is the emphasis on exploration, and, from climbing up near-vertical cliffs to flying over valleys on a paraglider, the unimpeded sense of discovery makes this a must-play on Switch.

However, Link's limited stamina makes this something of a risky venture, and there's nothing worse than expending his stamina wheel over a treacherous gulch or, say, a hungry Hinox. Fortunately, Link also has the ability to stuff his face in the menu screen, thus refilling the meter and avoiding disaster. Realistic? No. Convenient? Absolutely?

9 *Record Scratch* *Freeze Frame*

As Star Wars' lovable pessimist droid C-3P0 would say "we seem to be made to suffer. It's our lot in life." That seems to describe Link's role in Breath of the Wild, as the poor guy has to put up with quite a bit of torment.

After waking from his hundred-year slumber, he's met with all sorts of misery, and this pop culture cliché seems pretty fitting. Stuck in the frigid cold and fleeing from a Bokoblin encampment, Link may well be wondering exactly how he got himself in that situation.

8 Kitchen Nightmares

Though he doesn't exactly look like a chef, Link is actually pretty adept at turning scrounged-together flora and fauna into delectable dishes that restore his health and impart other benefits. Well... most of the time, that is.

If he's a bit too haphazard with what he throws together, he may well end up with some barely-edible gunk hilariously labeled as "dubious food." In those moments, we imagine Kitchen Nightmares' notoriously foul-mouthed Gordon Ramsay berating Link for his underwhelming culinary efforts.

7 Down Payment

One of the most famous—or perhaps infamous—moments in Breath of the Wild comes when Link is forced to dress like a female Gerudo in order to access the all-female Gerudo town. The mission is certainly creative, but it's given rise to a ton of fan-made internet content of which we're sure Nintendo would not approve.

This situation takes things to another level entirely, and it's a conversation found within the actual game! Rupees may be tough to come by in this version of Hyrule, but we can't imagine Link taking any "down payments" any time soon.

Pokémon Sun and Moon took place on the tropical island paradise of Alola, and the new region hosted quite a few unique regional pokémon variants. Interestingly though they were, we didn't imagine Nintendo would add a similar variation to Breath of the Wild.

It's also worth noting that most Nintendo-developed games are relatively glitch-free, making this post all the stranger. Did Link get run over by a steamroller? Is he stretching himself so he can be tall enough to get on all the rides at Hyrule's theme park? The world may never know.

5 Banana Hater

Link encounters tons of baddies throughout his adventures, but none are more sinister than the Yiga clan. A secretive band of assassins determined to stop the hero from accomplishing his goals, they go to great lengths to ensure that the realm remains in chaos.

They do have one exploitable weakness, however. For some strange reason, Yiga clan members cannot resist bananas. So much so, in fact, that they treat a dislike of the fruit as a capital offense. We don't suppose Link could talk his way out of this situation.

4 Where We're Going, We Don't Need Any Horses

Horseback riding has been a staple of the Zelda series since 1998's critically-acclaimed Ocarina of Time, but Breath of the Wild doubled down on the mechanic, making it near-essential for those looking to explore as much of the vast landscape as they could.

That said, there are certainly alternative means of transportation for the particularly daring. Breath of the Wild's occasionally wonky physics can be exploited to launch Link into the sky via exploitative use of the magnesis, and the results are as awe-inspiring as they are potentially fatal.

3 Lovely Lady

As previously mentioned, there's a ton of Zelda fan art out there of which Nintendo probably wouldn't be all that approving. Case in point, this comic depicting Link's hidden feelings toward Lady Urbosa.

Though she's undoubtedly helpful during Link's quest to tame the Divine Beasts and aid the princess in the fight against Ganon, most players aren't interested in the character for her utility. We doubt Link would be so forward with his desires, but we're certain at least a few fans were thinking this at some point during their playthroughs.

2 Who Is That?

This one is definitely a bit esoteric, but hear us out. A parody of the wolf arrow meme and the age-old "what if Zelda were a girl" joke, this meme's on-the-nose labeling of the arrows and the "who is that?" text over Princess Zelda is hilarious.

As we all know, that's Mr. Zelda in the middle, Emperor of the land of Hirule. His life's mission is to protect others from getting shot with arrows. On the ground before him is some strange woman we've never seen before. Perhaps this is a teaser image for the upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel?

1 When You See A Shrine

Much of the core gameplay in Breath of the Wild involves questing for shrines. Relatively easy to come across and almost always self-contained, they're an essential means of leveling up and vital to Link's task of defeating Calamity Ganon.

Common though they are, coming across a hard-to-reach or unexpected shrine can be a pretty amazing thing, and we're certain that most players have said "ooh, a shrine" to themselves while playing. Little did they know that Nintendo expected that reaction and named a shrine accordingly. What's that? It's just an oddly-cropped photo? No, we're pretty sure it's the Ooh Shrine.
