10 What If Zelda Were A Girl Memes That Are Too Hilarious For Words

It’s something that happens way more than it should. Chalk it up to ignorance, carelessness, or whatever else you want to call it, but you can’t deny that there’s still a pretty surprising amount of people who think Link is Zelda. No, they don’t think he’s the titular princess; rather that he’s the series’ namesake.

This is probably a case of associating the main character with anything and everything in their game. Link is the main character, so, of course, most people unaware of the series or new to it will assume that The Legend of Zelda is in reference to him. But the series has been around for so long now that you have to wonder why people still make the mistake. Here are some hilarious memes that perfectly illustrate the ridiculousness of it all.

10 Oh, Tumblr

Well, we all know that the internet is a (Breath of the) wild place. You can find pretty much anything on there, and, in regards to video game characters, you will find anything and everything you never wanted to see. In this case, it’s a pretty comedic gender-bend involving Link.

You have to give the artist here props; they did a solid job with the design and everything. But someone needs to shoot them a memo and let them know that there’s a typo in their drawing. Link is spelled wrong.

9 Cooler Heads

As funny as this whole misunderstanding is for fans, some really don’t take it all that well. It’s understandable, after all, it’s pretty common knowledge and having it brought up time and time again can be pretty stale.

Well, Link looks like he’s had just about enough of the misunderstanding here as well. It’s a bit of an extreme reaction, but you have to feel bad for the guy. He’s the hero of the story, and people can’t even get his name right.

8 Nice Cosplay

Cosplaying is incredibly popular not only at conventions, but outside of those events as well. Zelda cosplay are always incredibly detailed and full of heart, but it looks like someone got confused based on this great Link cosplay.

As you can see, it seems like someone misunderstood this gender-bent cosplay and yet again brought up the age-old conundrum. It’s a bit of a sore topic at this point, but that doesn’t stop people from having a laugh every now and then.

7 HEY! LISTEN!

Link isn’t exactly the most outspoken character in gaming, and his actions usually speak louder than his words. In fact, a series of grunts and breaths is all you’ll get out of him most of the time.

If he could talk, what would he have to say about the whole misunderstanding and how long it’s been going on for? If his reaction was anything like it is in the picture above, then the whole thing would be that much funnier.

6 Only Gamers Know

What’s so great about the “what if Zelda was a girl" meme is that it’s kind of a twofold joke. One poking fun at those who get that bit wrong, and one a self-mocking kind of response to those who put all that much importance on the misunderstanding.

This meme shows you just how to get any gamer—particularly Zelda fans—going from zero to sixty. All you have to say is those six magic words and they’ll be off. Good luck.

5 Well Now It’s Obvious

Here’s another hilarious one poking fun at the “what if” meme in a pretty unique way. It’s a pretty self-aware meme and is worth a chuckle or two from any fan.

The different incarnations of Link here are a nice touch as well. It sort of drives home the point that fans have had years to tell these two characters apart. There are so many games and outlets in other mediums, yet the mistake is still made.

4 Impossible

This next one is pretty darn funny and is a little topical as well, so why not include it. Both Doctor Who and Star Wars made some pretty noticeable changes to their franchises with new female leads.

While the question this is asking is technically correct—Link is the main character—it misses the mark entirely. Not only that, but all this confusion really diminishes Zelda’s own roles in the games.

3 Really?

Some people can definitely relate to this. This is a perfect crop and use of this BotW scene and offers a change of perspective for this meme. While most of the focus is put on Link, this one looks to Zelda herself.

Zelda has a large role in the games and is key to pretty much every narrative. The fact that so many people get her identity wrong just plays down her character’s importance a bunch. Fans know and love who she is, but people still overlook her.

2 What if Zelda Was A Grill?

Misunderstandings can be great, even purposeful ones. The Zelda girl meme can definitely be misconstrued with a little bit of effort. The end result is some hilarious self-satire from the community.

The meme has certainly gone on for long enough. Rather than drop it completely, changing it up like this keeps it fresh while offering fans even more to laugh about. It just highlights the ridiculous aspect of it all.

1 Bet So

Breath of the Wild was certainly a well-received game by both critics and fans. It won plenty of awards, stole hearts, and is still commonly discussed today. But the question to ask here is; would it have been as successful if Zelda was actually a girl?

Yes. Because she is. And that’s a picture of Link. Same meme, different game, it seems. This is a pretty funny take on it all and once again satirizes the manufactured outrage that the meme targets.
