The Legend of Zelda is Nintendo's most grand adventure. Regardless of the title, fans of the series know that, when they play any entry in the series, they can expect a gigantic world waiting to be explored with dungeons aplenty waiting to be plundered. To add to this sense of scale, there are a number of giant boss battles that add weight to every accomplishment.

Most of the time, the anticipation pays off with a glorious boss fight that we won't soon forget, and we want to focus on that for this list. However, with so many to choose from, we're bound to leave a few favorites off. Here are just some of the very best Zelda bosses ever.

10 Gohdan: The Wind Waker

Gohdan has been seen with different names in other Legend of Zelda titles (and even a few Super Mario games to boot), but we think his appearance in Wind Waker is his best. There's something kind of unsettling about him with the cute art style Wind Waker utilizes, and the fact that his battle actively encourages players to use multiple weapons to defeat him really breaks up the formula.

If we had any complaints, we'd have to say he takes a little too long to defeat and he never changes his playbook, but outside of that, he's one of the more memorable parts of this game.

9 King Bulblin Eldin Bridge Battle: Twilight Princess

Twilight Princess: Link on Epona brandishing sword on Eldin Bridge

Twilight Princess was, at one point, the most cinematic Zelda adventure. With technology finally catching up to the series' aspirations, Nintendo put together a dark title with some serious stakes. One such example of this was King Bulblin's battle on Eldin Bridge.

After kidnapping Colin, Link tracks King Bulblin down and fights him in an epic jousting match on a bridge with no side rails. The battle itself isn't too difficult once you get the nuances down, but there's something about this particular fight that feels really rewarding. It's easily one of the best in the series.

8 Monk Maz Koshia: Breath of The Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild doesn't really have a lot of variety in the boss battle department. In fact, if we're just talking about the Divine Beasts, most of the Blight Ganons are pretty interchangeable. Thankfully, however, Nintendo rectified that in the game's DLC and gave us one of the best boss battles in the series, against Monk Maz Koshia.

In the Champion's Ballad DLC, players meet Koshida in the Shrine of Ressurection. He bestows a quest on our hero and we're set off. On completing his task for him, he informs Link that there is one final thing he needs to do to prove himself. That's when the battle begins.

In theory, Mothula isn't a difficult boss. It follows a relatively simple pattern to follow, and it's not hard to hit. What makes Mothula interesting is everything going on around it. The ground is moving in different directions depending on where you stand and there are moving spikes that spring out at you with almost no notice.

Trying to juggle all of these things alone would be difficult, but adding a boss in the middle of it all leads to some real challenge. There's a lot going on on-screen during this battle, and it's so brilliantly ridiculous.

Dark Link is one of the coolest bosses in Zelda history, and while you can cheat your way to victory relatively easily, the concept alone puts him on this list. As the final boss in the weirdest game in the franchise, Dark Link is your equal with a blade. He mimics every move you make and can counter you in an instant.

What makes him even more interesting is that he's not associated with Ganon in any way, making him a pretty unique character in Zelda lore. Instead, he's just described as Link's shadow and only serves as a final trial for our hero before he acquires the Triforce of Courage.

5 Koloktos: Skyward Sword

This ancient robot — or cyborg considering it has a heart — operates with six arms, all of which work to kill Link during this battle. To defeat him, Link must use his newly found whip to tear off each appendage before striking him in his weak point. Once he's down to just one limb, however, he reassembles himself and pops out two legs.

In a way, this battle reminds us of General Grievous' fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of The Clones, but in reality, that scene doesn't hold a candle to the intensity this battle brings.

4 Demise: Skyward Sword

Skyward Sword's final boss battle takes place against Ganon's precursor, Demise. Though, we wouldn't blame you if you couldn't tell the difference between the two. Still, the showdown between the hero and evil incarnate is as epic as one could hope.

To start, it's the first time in the story the two have ever faced one another, giving the battle equal feelings of dread and excitement. On a more technical note, it implements the motion controls in a way that doesn't frustrate the user as much as the rest of the game does.

3 Ganondorf/Ganon: Ocarina Of Time

Back in 1998, we'd never seen something on this scale before. If we could focus squarely on Ganon for this, his size was something we could never expect on the Nintendo 64. Only seeing the yellow eyes through the dark silhouette of his massive body that's wielding two blades is an image we can't remove from our minds.

Taking place atop Ganon's Tower, this battle really felt like it brought the whole game together, since until we could enter the structure, players could only look at it from the outside. The Metroid-esque escape following his defeat really brought a feeling of finality to the game.

2 Majora: Majora's Mask

Via Nintendo

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is an intensely dark and unsettling game, and the battle with Majora highlights that. Players begin where they left off the first time they encountered Skull Kid atop the Clocktower. This leads to a really weird cutscene that we won't delve too much into for spoiler purposes. Regardless, when the scene ends, Link is staring down the floating mask, and another fight ensues in this strange fever-dream landscape. Once players use their masks to take down this monstrosity, it grows limbs for one final round.

His screams while you hit him make your skin crawl and his laugh will surely give you goosebumps. It's as if this battle was designed solely to make the player feel uncomfortable, and we mean that in the best way. This is the perfect way to end what is considered one of the best games of all time.

1 Stallord: Twilight Princess

It's going to be hard for Nintendo to ever top the Stallord battle in Twilight Princess, and in the three games that released since, they haven't even really come close. In the Arbiter's Grounds, players come across the Spinner, a large spinning top with gear teeth used to transport from place to place inside the area. It's also the crux of this fantastic battle.

While chasing the giant fire-breathing fossil, players must use the Spinner to hop from wall to wall while timing jumps just right to avoid getting hit. If they do so, they can catch up with the flying skull and jump to hit him, causing him to fall. The battle itself is fast-paced and exciting, making it one of the most exhilarating in the series.
