From the land below Skyloft, Ghirahim proves to be an overconfident and flamboyant character in Skyward Sword. The antagonist clashes with Link multiple times during the game in the hopes of capturing Princess Zelda for his own gain.

He's a character that has had many form changes and expression exaggerations and has become one of the most iconic antagonists in a Zelda game. Whilst he's no Ganon, Ghirahim has evil plots, and the Demon Lord's progression through Skyward Sword is challenging and he proves to be a fearsome enemy. Hopefully, when you revisit Skyward Sword or play it for the first time. you can see how this villain gives the game the praise it deserves.

10 Ghirahim's Name Has Many Origins

The latter part of Ghirahim's name is taken from Agahnim who is the wizard antagonist from A Link To The Past. The wizardry nature fits well with Ghirahim's black magic usage as well. The first part of the name, Ghira, was said to sound evil and villainous to the game designers.

Looking at the origins of the name Ghira, it is considered to be a sign of protective jealousy which relates to Ghirahim's egotistic behavior and drive to achieve his goals.

9 His Features Change Depending On His Form

While Ghirahim is a highly detailed and fashion-focused character from The Legend Of Zelda games, his ears change their design depending on which form he is in. His first and second form show his right ear pointed and his left ear round. In the third and final form, both of his ears are pointed.

The reasoning behind his ears being different in his first two forms is to animate his hair easier, and in truth it is one of his most striking features.

Skyward Sword was the first game that introduced Ghirahim and since then he has featured in one more Zelda franchise and one Nintendo franchise. In Hyrule Warriors/Legends, he is a playable character and is unlocked in the gallery by using a candle on a specific bush. This will start a battle and a victory will unlock Ghirahim.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and 3DS/Wii U, Ghiarhim is an assist trophy and a regular trophy. He will attack other players with swords and teleport around the stage.

Link proves to be a stone in every step of Ghirahim's path and furthermore does what he can to capture Zelda and sacrifice her. This involves traveling back in time to awaken his king.

Not only with his flamboyant nature and over-confident style, but Ghirahim does something that is not heard of from another Zelda character. This is also a rare one from video game characters in general, but when Ghirahim begins the ritual to bring back Demise, he can be heard humming his own theme music.

On top of this he considers himself in high regard and is seen as a figure of authority in the land below Skyloft. This is why he prefers to be addressed as, Lord Ghirahim.

5 His Design Is Based On Other Zelda Characters

When the Zelda team was creating the designs for Skyward Sword, they wanted their antagonist to be the perfect alternative to Fi. He was also intended to be around the same age as Link.

As Ghirahim was being designed, it was decided by the creators that the design of the evil sword spirit within him would gradullay reveal itself. An example of this is the multiple forms of Ghirahim seen in the games, including the third form with textured diamonds to reflect light.

4 His Character Design Tells A Lot About Him

What may look like applied eye-liner around his eyes is actually sleep deprivation. Ghirahim perpetually worships demise and so the bags under his eyes never fade. His appearance is reminiscent of a magician and it is said Ghirahim summons weapons from another realm by using black magic.

He is certainly one of the most flamboyantly dressed characters in the Zelda universe and this is because Ghirahim loves to dress up and wear jewelry. The change in the character's color also represents Ghirahim's mood and the darker he is, the angrier he becomes.

Ghirahim is a member of the Demon Tribe who aimed to rule the surface which is the land below Skyloft. The Demon Tribe were mainly made up of Bokoblins and Moblins. In their attempt for success, they were stopped by the Goddess, Hylia.

In the events between this and the modern-day in the game, not much is said about Ghirahim and what he has been doing in between. It is imagined however, he has been waiting and working on bringing his leader, Demise, back to his true form.

2 He Attacks Differently Depending On Your Move

In the Innovative Skyview Temple, Link faces Demon Ghirahim as the first boss. If you do not use your sword when first entering the battle, Ghirahim will slap you. This takes one heart of damage but can be blocked with a shield bash. Having a strong shield is very effective in the game.

If you do strike with the sword, however, Ghirahim's fingers will glow with a purple aura. Ghirahim will grab the sword and aim to take it from you if it isn't pulled away fast enough. Ghirahim can both attack and then throw the sword at Link or it can be knocked from his hands with another shield bash.

1 Ghirahim Has A Variety Of Fighting Styles

Ghirahim is both a defensive and attacking fighter depending on which fight you are in and at what point. During the first battle, he will appear defensive in stopping your attacks, but will soon draw a sword of his own. Ghirahim also follows your sword movements making him one of the more technical bosses in Zelda games.

In terms of attacking, Ghirahim can summon sharp daggers which can be deflected and charge at Link. His variety of fighting and defense styles keep you frustrated and on your feet when facing Ghirahim. He is considered to be one of the hardest boss 3D Zelda boss fights.
