With so many characters to unlock (including some that have never appeared in the movies), it can seem overwhelming at first. But because there are certain areas that can only be unlocked by specific characters, it's vital to replay various chapters which will help unlock characters faster. So let’s narrow it down to the best of the best characters in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Updated January 3, 2023, by Avery Feyrer: Since the posting of this article, there have been additional characters added to The Skywalker Saga. With close to 400 characters in the game, it might be a bit daunting to decide who you should unlock first. We've updated this list and added a few more characters that should be on your priority list playing The Skywalker Saga.

13 Han Solo

Han Solo and Chewbacca in Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga

You unlock Han Solo after completing the second chapter of A New Hope called “Hunk of Junk,” essentially getting the character right when you arrive at the Death Star. Han Solo is a legendary smuggler and part of the holy trinity of the original trilogy with Luke and Leia.

Solo has six total costumes, highlighted by the Stormtrooper disguise he wore in A New Hope, and the Carbonite shirt when he was Jabba’s prisoner in Return of the Jedi. In The Skywalker Saga, Solo is classified as a Scoundrel, meaning he can find weak points in environments to destroy areas and possibly unlock new pathways.

12 Chewbacca

The trustworthy, loyal companion of Han Solo, Chewbacca has been helping save the galaxy from turmoil since Revenge of the Sith. With his powerful Bowcaster, Chewbacca blasts any foe that stands in his way. In The Skywalker Saga, Chewbacca is a Scoundrel class, allowing him to utilize upgrades such as Business Opportunist, Charged Shot, Combat Slide, and Piercing Rounds.

Chewbacca appears in every Star Wars episode except The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Throughout The Skywalker Saga, there’s a running joke of Chewbacca trying to get a medal because he wasn’t presented one after his heroic efforts in A New Hope. If you need a Scoundrel, there’s nobody better than the Wookie himself.

11 BB-8

When the First Order crashes the party and takes Poe Dameron hostage in Force Awakens, the Resistance pilot manages to transfer the map of Luke Skywalker to his droid companion, BB-8. This white and orange droid is extremely fearless, cares about Poe deeply, and will do anything to rescue his friend, and the galaxy.

BB-8 is the only droid in Star Wars that looks like this: a round ball with a “head” that just rolls around everywhere. The droid does have an electric shocker that it can stab enemies with to cause significant damage. As an Astromech Droid, BB-8 can use Distraction, Droid Barge, Astromech Socket Expert, and Super-Charged.

10 Sith Rey

Sith Rey With Double-Bladed Red Lightsaber

While training with Luke Skywalker on Ahch-To, Rey discovers a cave that radiates dark energy. Similar to Luke having to confront the dark side on Dagobah in Empire Strikes Back, so too must Rey confront her dark side in TLJ. Ultimately, Rey resists the temptation and chooses the Light.

But what if Rey did succumb to the Dark Side? Well, you can live in that alternate timeline with Sith Rey. Equipped with a dual-bladed lightsaber like Darth Maul, Sith Rey is certainly a force to be reckoned with. Rey, in general, is a unique character in The Skywalker Saga, because she has a Jedi, Scavenger, and Dark Side class, allowing her to swap and use those class-specific abilities.

9 Boba Fett

Thought to have perished in the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi, the bounty hunter Boba Fett survived and appeared in the spin-off show Mandalorian and his own show The Book of Boba Fett. And in The Skywalker Saga, Boba Fett can be quite a useful character in certain situations.

With his jetpack, the bounty hunter can hover in midair for roughly three seconds before descending. Three seconds might not sound a lot, but it allows him to reach areas that other characters can't. As a bounty hunter, Fett possesses one of the better upgrades in the game, Hidden Bounties, which allows him to receive 250 Studs after defeating enemies.

8 Darth Maul

Darth Maul Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga

By far one of the most fearsome-looking characters in Star Wars, Darth Maul terrified the masses in The Phantom Menace. The spike-headed Sith Lord was the main instrument used by Darth Sideous to create turmoil on Naboo by trying to kill the queen. Obi-Wan Kenobi was able to stop Darth Maul but not before the Dathomirian struck down his master, Qui-Gon Jin.

As a user of the Dark Side, civilians and other characters will keep a longer distance from Darth Maul. He’s able to use the Force Push and Lift similar to Jedis, while also being able to crush their enemies in midair. While characters like Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine might steal the spotlight, don’t forget about Darth Maul in the villain category.

7 C-3PO

There are only two characters that have appeared in all nine Star Wars episodes and one of them is our gold-plated friend C-3PO. Originally built by Anakin Skywalker, C-3PO has come a long way from his desert home of Tatooine. The Protocol Droid prides itself in knowing over six million forms of communication, which can be extremely useful in The Skywalker Saga.

Throughout the game, you’ll encounter alien species or droids that don’t speak Basic. Luckily, C-3PO can translate anyone in the galaxy (as long as they aren’t Sith), and can also receive 500 Studs by translating languages with the Paid Translator upgrade. On top of that, C-3PO can break his body in half and use either half to access areas a normal-sized Lego figure couldn’t. If you unlock the Destructive Disassembly perk, C-3PO will release a shockwave during disassembly, damaging nearby enemies.

6 Rancor

Who would’ve thought the massive beast that Jabba the Hutt keeps as a pet under his palace would be a playable character? For a whopping 500,000 Studs, the Rancor can be unlocked, and, oh boy, let the chaos begin. Standing almost five meters in height, the Rancor towers over everything in sight and is the largest character in the game.

The Rancor is considered an Extra character and doesn’t have any class-specific abilities. Nonetheless, roaming the districts of Coruscant as the giant Rancor is something that must be done in The Skywalker Saga.

5 Mandalorian And Grogu

With more and more Star Wars content being developed by Disney, it was only a matter of time before Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga received new characters. The first DLC pack included a few prominent characters from the first show, highlighted by Din Djarin with little Grogu floating behind him.

Naturally, the Mandalorian is of the Bounty Hunter class, which means he’s capable of detecting enemies through walls, firing a wider spread of bolts, and using Shock Grenades to stun enemies. The Mandolorian is a handy character to have around, and, of course, Mando and Grogu are one of the best duo characters in the game.

4 R2-D2

lego star wars r2d2 Cropped

Besides C-3PO, the only other character to appear in all nine major Star Wars episodes is his fellow droid companion R2-D2. R2-D2 has one of the most important tasks in Star Wars lore: delivering the Death Star plans to Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope.

As an Astromech Droid, R2-D2 is vital in hacking into various terminals throughout The Skywalker Saga. Among the class-specific abilities, Distraction is one of the better ones in the game. By using Distraction, R2-D2 can create a hologram that distracts opponents for a short amount of time. This ability is extremely useful during a mission in The Rise of Skywalker, where Rey and the team have to sneak into Babu Frik’s workshop undetected.

3 Darth Vader

lego star wars darth vader Cropped

One of the most infamous villains in pop culture history, Darth Vader exerts a fear that engulfs everyone around him. Even though The Skywalker Saga has a humorous charm to it, Vader's introduction in A New Hope remains one of the most haunting scenes in the series.

By tapping into the Dark Side, Darth Vader is more powerful than any Jedi. If you unlock the Dark Rise and Power Push upgrades, the effectiveness of the Sith Lord’s Force Lift and Force Push improves greatly. But if you truly want to feel the gruesome power of Darth Vader, you’ll need Force Crush, allowing him to damage enemies when grabbed with the Force.

2 Luke Skywalker With Yoda

Luke Carrying Yoda On His Back On Desert Planet With Lightsaber Extended

After fighting against the empire on the icy planet of Hoth, Luke Skywalker is advised to seek out the exiled Jedi Master Yoda. On the swamp planet Dagobah, Luke is put through rigorous training drills by Yoda, including one where the young Jedi had to carry the elderly master on his back. While having Yoda on his back doesn’t give him any special advantage, this costume is one of the character’s best.

Luke has 13 total costumes spread across the Jedi and Hero classes. Sure, you might want to keep the status quo with Luke fighting Darth Vader on Bespin in his normal attire, but why not battle your villainous daddy with Yoda perched on your back?

1 General Grievous

General Grievous With 4 Lightsabers, 2 Blue, 2 Green

The best character in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga might come as a surprise. The Supreme Commander of the Confederacy droid army in Revenge of the Sith, General Grievous is one of the best villains in the films and even better in Lego form. The four-armed cyborg collects lightsabers of fallen Jedi and can wield them with high efficiency.

Because General Grievous isn’t technically a Sith Lord, he’s categorized as a normal villain. Instead of using the Force as a secondary attack, Grievous throws grenades to cause long-range damage. Of the villain-specific abilities, Defense Droid and Demolitions Expert are must-haves. Defense Droid allows Grievous to deploy a training remote to provide backup during combat and Demolitions Expert increases the explosive damage of his grenades. Ultimately, being able to wield four lightsabers is more than enough to earn the title of the best character in Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
