Neowiz, together with Round8 Studio, has announced a new game called Lies of P. The first official trailer gives insight into the story. Inspired by the tale of Pinocchio, the game will be a souls-like action RPG that brings players along on a dark retelling of the beloved children’s novel.

The developer and publisher last collaborated on Bless Unleashed, which was released for Xbox in early 2020 and later for the PS4. Unfortunately, the game did not perform well, with critics assigning mediocre ratings and players being turned off by a variety of bugs that diminished the game’s quality. Despite its ultimate poor performance, the original beta was a promising successor to Bless Online, which had a small but passionate fanbase. If the developers have taken the time to learn from their mistakes, it is reasonable to expect that Lies of P can succeed in a way that Bless Unleashed did not.

The trailer acts as a prologue to the game’s story, which centers on the character of Pinocchio. Unlike the original tale, however, the Pinocchio of Lies of P is a puppet mechanoid on a journey to become human in a city overcome by a deadly plague. Though the trailer itself reveals very little, the game’s Steam page provides additional details regarding the visual concept and gameplay. Set in the fallen city of Krat, which was inspired by the Belle Époque Era in Europe, Lies of P takes players through a compelling story that plays out differently depending on how you lie. The game also includes a complex combat system, with players having the ability to create their own unique combinations of weapons and change parts of Pinocchio’s body in order to gain certain advantages.

Lies of P does not yet have a release date, though we know the game will be available on the PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. With only a trailer and preliminary details to go off of, it is too early to say whether or not the game will be a gem or a dud, especially considering the performance of Bless Unleashed. That being said, the game’s fresh take on the classic Pinocchio story and unique lie-based gameplay are certainly intriguing enough to keep it on your radar until more is revealed.
