So, the good news is, we’ve actually got a release window for the second episode of Life is Strange 2 at last. That’s the silver lining to this whole situation.
Granted, we’re going to have to wait a good deal longer than many fans were anticipating, but there it is. January 2019 is the vague date to scribble into our Dontnod Entertainment-branded diaries.
The whole Life is Strange franchise has really escalated, hasn’t it? It started back in 2015, with the original release. It was a rather obscure and under-the-radar graphic adventure, notable mostly for being published by Square Enix, and rose to become a huge sleeper hit.
Fans were enamored by the game’s heroine, Max Caulfield, and the way that her power to rewind time was used to create intriguing butterfly effect situations. It was a typical ‘save the world’ sort of story, told in the most untypical of ways. It was also released episodically.
Fans ravenously devoured those episodes, like an unexpectedly interesting Netflix series. Sequel Life is Strange 2 released in September of this year (there was also a prequel, Life is Strange: Before The Storm, which proved the rumors of June 2017 right), and… well, that’s not quite true. The first episode of the sequel released just about two months ago, and we’ve been clamoring for more ever since. Now, finally, Dontnod is starting to lift the lid.
As Eurogamer reports, episode two of Life is Strange 2 is coming in January. The developers detailed all of this in a blog post, in which they explained that they’re completely committed to ensuring that each episode is as good as it possibly can be. After all, the strength of the narrative is paramount here, and that’s not something you can ever skimp on.
“The Life is Strange series is a project close to all of our hearts and one for which we do not want to rush development and thereby fail to meet the benchmark of quality and emotional impact that you, our players, deserve,” the post read. “This is why we so far have not announced an official release date - we want to ensure that we will be in a position to release something that we are proud of and that you will enjoy and remember forever.”
Yep, it’s the usual it’s-being-delayed-so-it-will-ultimately-be-better sort of spiel, but it’s completely appropriate here. The first game told a story that many players will never forget, and it’s only right that this holds true in the new game, too. Dontnod naturally wants to push things even further and exceed our expectations as well.
What’s in store for our new heroes Sean and Daniel in episode two, then? Well, we don’t know just yet. All the team has given us is the January 2019 date and the name of the episode, Rules. Oh, and one more thing, they’ve promised to release more details in mid-December, so stay tuned for that.
