The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the Nintendo Switch has been out for a little over a week now and fans have been loving the new game. A remake of the 1993 Game Boy title of the same name, critics have been unanimous in their praise for how well the new version has stayed true to its original title. Of course, with any remake comes certain changes, many of which have made an already celebrated game even more beloved. Here are five ways the new Link's Awakening on the Switch improves over the original.

5. Art Style

The toy-like art style of the game has been a rather divisive subject between fans of the game. However, it's undeniably an improvement from the two-dimensional pixelated style with a limited color palette of the original Game Boy game. Whereas the original style called upon players to rely upon their own imagination to fill in dimensions and colors, the new art style fills in all those blanks. Additionally, the new toy-like style pairs very well with the dream setting of the game, all giving off the impression that this is all a fantasy.

4. Map Markups

In the original Link's Awakening, players had to rely on memory when they came across certain important areas they hoped to return to later. The map of the game was vast, and it was common for players to get lost trying to find past locations. However, the new Link's Awakening has taken a cue from Breath of the Wild and includes a system for players to place pins on their map as a way for them to remember important locations, chests to return to later, or anything else they want to markup on the detailed map.

3. Improved Controls

This one is fairly obvious, but the controls on the Link's Awakening remake have been highly improved over the original game. The original Game Boy handheld device had only two buttons, with one button that was often used to utilize Link's sword and the other to use his equipment. Now, on the Switch, the A button is used to interact with objects, the B button is to use Link's sword, while the X and Y buttons are fully programmable to use different items players might want to keep equipped on their journey.

2. Fairy Bottles

Only found in the Switch remake, Fairy Bottles are important items that can be used to capture Fairies from Great Fairy Fountains and other places in the world, allowing Link to carry a maximum healing power with him (and save him from impending death) wherever he goes. They're extremely useful, especially during the game's tougher challenges. Fairy Bottles can be found throughout the entire game, with one that can be located in player's initial playthrough hours, as one of the rewards at the Crane Game house in the starting town.

1. The Seashell Sensor

The original Link's Awakening had 26 hidden seashells scattered across the map, but one of the big changes in the remake is that the number of seashells has doubled. Collecting seashells in the original unlocked all sorts of prizes, including the best sword in the game - and that feature has remained intact for the remake. However, in the remake, one of the prizes is the Seashell Sensor, which unlocks after Link collects fifteen seashells. When equipped, the sensor will ping every time the player is near a seashell. It's a pretty nifty device and makes seashell hunting a lot easier in the game.
