Littlewood is a peaceful RPG about rebuilding a town, making friends, and growing crops while you relax in a chill world. Though it came out on Steam in 2020, it recently dropped on Switch, which means now tons of new players can get their crafting/farming/fishing/socializing groove on.

Littlewood is a very different game from similar titles like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, though, so here are some tips and tricks to help you get started.

10 Learn The Trick To Fishing

When you see fish shadows in water, you may be tempted to cast as close to them as possible. This is actually a recipe for failure in Littlewood. Instead, you need to cast to a spot right next to a fish, and then they'll swim over and bite. Your cast always goes two squares forward, so be mindful of your position and careful where you're aiming, and you'll get bites every time. You can also reshape any water in your town for easy aim, so you never have to worry about a fish being out of reach.

9 Fast Travel With Build Mode

Unlike Animal Crossing, which makes you put in work before being able to terraform your home, Littlewood gives you to power to move (and break) mountains from the start. Just by pressing B, you can open a menu to rearrange the buildings in your town, but the game doesn't tell you that when you move around in Build Mode, wherever your cursor is when you exit it is where your character will reappear.

This means that you can effectively walk through walls or over huge mountains in seconds just by warping into build mode then warping back out when you get where you want to be.

8 Save One Of Everything

This one is a crafting sim staple. Your pockets in Littlewood are functionally limitless, so it's in your best interest to save at least one of every item you get, at least at first. For one, you never what your latest crafting recipe will call for, and it helps to not suddenly be in need of Sea Stars after you just sold them all.

Littlewood also has an eventual Museum you can unlock, and you'll need one of everything to pack its exhibits too. Unlike in Animal Crossing, the museum in Littlewood gives you tangible rewards as well as a sense of accomplishment for filling it up, so saving your supplies gives you a nice head start.

7 Upgrade Your Air Balloon Platform

Every store front and utility can be upgraded in Littlewood, and doing so can expand shop inventory or increase your chances for extra items while crafting. However, the Air Balloon Platform stands tall as the most important thing to upgrade, because doing so grants you extra places to visit and extra mechanics to play with.

Upgrading your Air Balloon Platform gets you access to the Endless Forest where you can farm wood, then the Dust Cavern where you can harvest ore, then the Port City of Deluca where the game really opens up with multiple minigames and new characters, among other locations and benefits. If you want to get out of your town and see the world, you need to pour resources into the Air Balloon Platform every chance you get.

6 Never Work Alone

Whenever you set out to go chop wood, go fishing, or mine ore, be sure to bring a townsperson along. By asking someone in town to Hang Out, they'll follow you around and frequently give you a sprinkle of dewdrops (the game's currency) and kind words. Hanging out also builds your relationship level with townspeople, which brings its own benefits, especially if you're romantically interested in them. You can also upgrade how much dewdrops you get from hanging out with certain people. Be sure to rotate who you hang out with and spread the love around, and you'll never be in need of friends (or money).

5 Give Everyone A Desk

When you've built everyone in town a house, you may feel like there's not much else you can do for them besides asking to hang out. But each person in Littlewood has a large number of desires for their humble abode, which you can view by building them each a desk.

Building a desk for a townsperson gives you access to their wishlist, containing furniture, carpets and wallpaper, and location desires they want. Some may want to live near the town market, and some may want to live far away from the quarry. Fulfilling each request nets you 100 dewdrops, and also motivates you to buy more furniture recipes that you may end up liking for your own house.

4 Mind Your Energy

Littlewood's days don't pass according to any clock, but rather according to how quickly you burn your through your daily energy. When you're nearly tapped out the sun will abruptly set, and when you fill your meter entirely, you'll get a notification on screen you should head to bed ASAP.

However, you're free to walk yourself home and talk to people before turning in, but be careful. You use energy by giving gifts to people, and by receiving them, so if you talk to someone on your way home and you're out of energy, if they give you a gift you'll be knocked on your butt until morning.

3 Dedicate Your Days

You'll be surprised how quickly a day can pass in Littlewood. Because of this, and because of how many things there are to do, you'll need to give yourself a game plan to maximize your days. Dedicate a day to chopping wood (maybe even days for specific kinds of wood), then others just for fishing, and still other days just to craft with your newly farmed materials.

Of course, you can still go about talking to your neighbors or filling up the museum, which shouldn't make a dent in your energy, but every time you leave your house, make sure that you have an idea and some intention behind what you plan to get done that day.

2 Set Long-Term Goals

Beyond planning what you want to do day-to-day, it's also helpful to have a larger goal in mind that you're working for. Maybe you want to save up enough dewdrops to expand the land you can build on, or maybe you're farming for materials to build specific objects around town, like all the great statues you get from leveling up skills.

Any of these larger targets can give you a heading and structure to keep going forward. The sheer number of  choices offered to the player can be downright intimidating at times, but by giving yourself a large target to aim for, you can find a path through the wilderness of options.

1 Take Your Time

While there's so much to do and so many directions to go as you build your peaceful town, you also need to remember that there's no rush. Littlewood calls itself a relaxing RPG, and you should take that idea to heart. The townspeople are all easy-going (even Bubsy, who can be a bit snobby), and there aren't any failure conditions to worry about. Let yourself get a little lost in your own goals from time to time. Let yourself wander through the seasons and see what all happens in a year in this peaceful world. There are sure to be Littlewood speedrunners racing for optimal town builds, but for the rest of us, we can afford to stop and smell the flowers we planted a few weeks ago. Littlewood wants you to take your time and enjoy the ride.
