The Prehistory Chapter in Live A Live contains a secret boss. The Mammoth King is easy to miss and hard to beat, but drops some exceptional gear that turn Pogo into a prehistoric powerhouse. You'll only have Pogo and Gori on your team for the battle, so make sure both are fully leveled and geared since the Mammoth King is tougher than even the chapter boss, Odo.

How To Find The Mammoth King

hunting the secret boss in prehistory wild lands

After Pogo, Gori and Beru are exiled from the Safe Cave, you'll wander the Wild Lands until you find another cave in the northeast. Before entering, you should hunt and defeat every enemy in the Wild Lands. This is your last chance to level up Beru, who should be at least Level 5 before entering the cave so that she has access to Sing Hurt during the final battle.

Once you enter the cave, Beru will be captured again by the Kuu Tribe, and you'll fight Zaki again. Once he's defeated, and you've escaped the trap chamber, you can pursue the Kuu Tribe to their encampment. However, you can also return to the Wild Lands, where the Mammoth King now roams.

In the southern area of the Wild Lands, near the Safe Cave, wander around until you hear a rumble and the ground shakes. This indicates that the Mammoth King is near. His scent cloud contains a mammoth icon, and if you find it then all other enemies and scent clouds will vanish, making it easier to focus on hunting the big prize. Since the Mammoth King is invisible like the other enemies in Prehistory, keep an eye on your mini-map to track the beast's movement.

Unlike other enemies, the Mammoth King will not attack as soon as you make contact with him. Instead, you'll need to press A as if you were speaking to him when you're close enough. Doing so initiate the battle; this prevents you from being ambushed by the Mammoth King before you're ready.

How To Beat The Mammoth King

prehistory hidden boss strategy pogo gori

Pogo and Gori should both be at least Level 12 before engaging the Mammoth King, and should be fully equipped. Gori can only equip limited gear, but make sure he at least has a Beastskin Cap, a Pelt, and Rough Bands to maximize his stats.

For Pogo, we recommend the following loadout:

Slot

Equipment

Helmet

Beast Horn

Weapon

Quick Spear

Off-Hand

Bang Glove

Armor

Wildheart Armor

Boots

Rough Bands

Accessory 1

Pretty Flower

Accessory 2

Pretty Flower

Accessory 3

Rough Bands

Accessory 4

Rough Bands

Accessory 5

Beast Fang

The accessories can be altered to suit your play style, but since the Mammoth King uses both physical and special attacks the mix of defenses provided by Pretty Flowers and Rough Bands can help keep Pogo in the fight.

You should also bring a bare minimum of six Huge Haunches of Meat and four Prickly Stones. The meat will be necessary to recover from the Mammoth King's powerful attacks, and the Prickly Stones - which can be crafted by the Artisans in the northwestern Wild Lands or in front of the Kuu Encampment - are necessary to keep consistent damage on the boss and prevent him from healing.

The Mammoth King has a surprisingly high Evasion for an elephant, and many of your attacks will miss. Worse still, many of his attacks create Fire Tiles, which damage your team while healing the boss. Immediately after the Mammoth King creates Fire Tiles, have the next character to act change the Fire Tiles Into Poison or Lightning. Gori can use his Poop Throw ability, but Pogo will need to use Prickly Stones from your inventory. Move the active character so that they can hit the exact center of the Mammoth King's 3x3 tile square. That way the boss won't get any healing from Fire Tiles unless he moves.

The other character should drop another set of tiles slightly off-center from the boss. This ensures that the Mammoth King takes damage from both Lightning and Poison as long as he's touching at least one tile of each. Once the tiles are set, make sure everyone is healed up; Huge Haunches of Meat can fully heal both characters if they're adjacent, while a regular Haunch Of Meat heals a little bit to the user only but provides buffs.

While you're waiting for the Mammoth King to create more Fire Tiles, try to get some debuffs to stick. Pogo's Poke Bind has a chance to paralyze the boss, while Gori's Scare Face can sometimes reduce the Mammoth King's Evasion.

If Poke Bind or Prickly Stones manage to paralyze the Mammoth King, hit him with everything you have. He can't evade while paralyzed, so your powerful attacks won't be wasted!

Repeat the process, keeping both characters' HP above 200 at all times if possible. If one teammate is incapacitated, drop everything and heal them with a Huge Haunch of Meat, even if it means letting the boss heal. You won't be able to beat the Mammoth King with only one character.
