There are so many different types of games on mobile devices. From games to play as you idly pass the time to open-world extravaganzas, you’ll rarely be short of exciting content to enjoy on the go. However, while most mobile games offer a passive experience for you to interact with while you wait for your next bus, there are a plethora of games that will entice you with their incredibly lengthy playtimes.

From hundreds of hours spent mining for diamonds to dozens more fighting monsters in a gorgeous Breath of the Wild-esque world, these beefy video games have a lot of content for you to get through. Fortunately, the on-the-go nature of that brick in your pocket makes them all the more accessible.

Updated on January 20, 2023 by Quinton O'Connor: It's important to keep up-to-date with these things if we're putting lists up on the internet. There are plenty of great time-consuming titles on mobile. We've added several more. Go forth and game!

9 XCOM 2 Collection

Xcom2: Grenadier Firing Beam Cannon Animation

It’s almost impossible to believe that 2016’s critically acclaimed tactical turn-based strategy game, XCOM 2 runs on mobile. However, lo and behold as the base game and its collection of fantastic DLC are all available on your handheld devices.

Just to get through its campaign will take you upwards of 30 hours. However, the chances are that you’ll not only play through the entire story more than once but also inevitably have to start over again when the going gets tough. If you’re looking for a lengthy experience on your mobile phone - so long as you can run it - XCOM 2 is absolutely for you.

8 Medieval 2: Total War

Medieval 2: Total War numbers among the best entries in its storied series thanks to its balancing act of complex yet understandable mechanics, epically scaled yet manageable battles, and a lush UI that's easy on the eye.

It goes without saying that Medieval 2: Total War is a long game. A really long game. Like every Total War title, it won’t be a quick and easy journey to steamroll across the globe destroying every civilization in your path. You’re looking at an experience anywhere between 30 and 140 hours! Suffice to say, the water will be ice-cold by the time you’ve finished playing this in your bathtub.

7 Genshin Impact

The enormous free-to-play JRPG extravaganza, Genshin Impact took the world by storm when it launched back in 2020. Like with most of the lengthier titles on the mobile phone, it’s nigh on impossible to imagine this open-world experience running on a mobile device. However, it absolutely works! You’ll get to explore gorgeous landscapes, battle fearsome bosses, and engage in an engrossing narrative featuring a wide range of playable characters. What’s not to love?

Of course, when it comes to playtime, nothing really trumps the gigantic Genshin Impact. With a narrative that’ll take you a whopping 50 hours and all the additional side content that can see you reach the 230-hour mark, it is fair to say that you’ll be playing a lot of Genshin Impact. Considering it's also playable with friends, you’re looking at a life-consuming experience right here.

6 Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is glorious. With a gorgeous pixel-art world to explore, a plethora of intriguing characters to meet, and a multitude of mechanics to interact with, you’ll never be short of fun content to engage with. Whether it's your first time getting your farm or if you’re returning to see what the experience is like on mobile, then you’re absolutely in for a treat. Just like every Stardew Valley player, you’ll make plenty of mistakes along the way, pass out one too many times, and give the wrong gift or two. It's part of the experience.

If you want numbers - who doesn’t love numbers? - then you’re looking at a hefty amount of hours spent tending to your farm. With each year taking players upwards of 30 hours to beat, and it taking roughly three or so years to see everything, you may play for around 90 hours.

5 Final Fantasy 8

While an argument can be made for any Final Fantasy being a great time on mobile devices, we think Final Fantasy 8 is the best pick for pockets. Its engaging card-based mini-game, Triple Triad, is simply the perfect game-within-a-game for while you're waiting at a bus stop, or on a quick work break, or just standing in line at the grocery store.

The main quest itself is, in series tradition, sprawling. It will set you back dozens upon dozens of hours, so if you really want to dive into FF8 in its entirety on your smartphone or tablet, you'll have a heck of a long time doing so.

4 Fortnite

Fortnite, for those who’ve suddenly emerged from beneath the uncomfortable rock they’ve been hiding under, is an easily-accessible third-person battle royale game that has continually impressed the world since its launch. Of course, while many purists will say it's a game better experienced on PC or even console, Fortnite is 100 percent playable - and fun - on your phone.

How many hours you’ll get out of Fortnite is completely dependent on you. While of course, this is true of every game, Fortnite doesn’t really have an end, so its longevity will increase or decrease depending on how much fun you’re having. Of course, if you get entirely immersed within the Fortnite gameplay loop, then you’re looking at infinite hours of gameplay. Even if you only dip in every so often to get a new skin or check out the latest update, you’ll still likely sink 20 or so hours into it with rounds taking around 20 - 30 minutes each to complete.

3 Baldur's Gate 2

Goodness. It's Baldur's Gate 2, the magnum opus of Western role-playing games in the early 2000s, and a strong contender for the isometric throne even today. Time was, the thought of such a gargantuan epic on a small screen was frankly unfathomable. Yet here we are. If you're looking for a mobile title that'll not just last you a while, but demand your full attention every step of the way, you cannot go wrong with this video game.

2 Minecraft

Not unlike Fortnite, Minecraft doesn’t necessarily have an endpoint. There isn’t really a conclusion to all of its content, as, due to its procedurally generated sandbox nature, there are endless things to see and do. If you want to build simple dirt houses, fight a bunch of mobs, and do your best to survive, then by all means go for it. If you want to build an entire city, country, or planet, then you can absolutely do that.

So, if you want facts, figures, and findings on just how many hours you’ll spend in Minecraft, let’s just say thousands. It truly can be as many as you’d like, with some players putting in around 270 to 360 hours.

1 Terraria

A beautiful homestead created in Terraria.

Terraria is a fantastic sandbox experience that you can get lost in. Its procedurally generated open-world, compelling construction and mining mechanics, gorgeous graphics, and satisfying soundtrack make for a mesmerisingly magnificent video game.

You can easily spend hundreds of hours seeing absolutely everything Terraria has to offer, especially as it is oftentimes a far more expansive interpretation of its genre with an extremely multilayered gameplay experience available. To see it through to the end - not that there really is an endpoint - you’re looking at a 170-hour-long playtime.
