In modern society, the notion is that falling into a fist fight isn’t as simple as centuries ago where people would duke it out to end arguments, but the easiest way to cause a ruckus is by badmouthing The Lord of the Rings in front of its fans. These people tend to go nuts should they even get a sniff at someone finding any flaws in their beloved series. Needless to say, these fans keep the films and books very close to their heart and there must be thousands of marathons going on right now as well.

Due to the fact that the last Lord of the Rings film was 15 years ago and the last Hobbit film is 4 years in the past, these films are now becoming more and more revered as time passes by, with people overlooking any plot holes or headscratchers that might be present at first or repeated viewings.

But as surprising as it is to find out, there are still fans out there who look at the films in a lighter sense. Due to this openness to amusement, they have made a few memes that poke fun at not only the movies but the fans who hold the films in such esteem value.

The following memes in the list show some parts of the film series in a different point of view, while other memes showcase the fans themselves how they seem to people who don’t live and breathe Lord of the Rings.

20 Nobody Cares, Sam

via pinterest.com

Whenever someone mentions the main character from The Lord of the Rings, the name that comes to mind is Frodo Baggins. The novel’s narrative also mainly circles around him while the films portray him in the light as a reluctant hero. Then there’s the fact that everyone always talks about Frodo when discussing who the main protagonist is.

So let’s face it: no one really does care much about Sam.

The films were made in such a way that you’d be forgiven for thinking all the characters can be considered as the co-protagonists. They all share ample screen time and Sam’s heroics can be more noticeable to the viewer. Yet it still doesn’t sit on most people’s mind that Sam can be considered one of the main protagonists, rather than just a supporting one, as Frodo gets most of the spotlight.

19 Best Birthday Gift Ever

via pinterest.com

The fandom is so crazy at times that it wouldn’t be the most surprising thing to hear if we were to find out some people had actually watched all the three films together in reverse. On YouTube, there are many videos that do show certain scenes played backward for the amusement for its viewers, such as the one where the One Ring’s destruction is shown in reverse and it seems as if Gollum and the Ring were created in Mount Doom, only for Frodo to take it and run away.

The entire reverse viewing experience would take this to newer, and ridiculous, lengths as by its end, although technically the beginning, we see the Ring end up in the hands of Bilbo once more, who would also magically become younger again.

18 More Alike Than You Think

via thechive.com

In contemporary pop culture history, three movie series have the most fan following–this isn’t taking into consideration Marvel or DC movies–and they would be Star Wars, Harry Potter, and The Lord of the Rings.

All three movies have one dark lord looking to take over.

These antagonists all are supremely powerful and it takes the combined efforts of our heroes to put an end to their reign of terror. This meme is more of a dig at Harry Potter but any Lord of the Rings or Potter fan will know both fandoms aren’t too fond of one another and this shot at Harry Potter’s expense will be sure to delight LotR fans. And to be honest Voldemort just doesn’t have as many feats as Sauron does.

17 Wrong Guy, Aragorn

via pinterest.com

Those who aren’t familiar with Game of Thrones are bound to confuse it with The Lord of the Rings. They both seem to be set in olden times and have people dressed in period costumes all with long hair and Shakespearean speaking to boot. Then there’s the fact that when Game of Thrones began the biggest name on the cast was Sean Bean.

This is why Aragorn confused Ned Stark for Boromir.

Lord of the Rings fans looking to get into the show will no doubt relate to Ned Stark as he will remind them of Boromir. And when Stark meets his end (spoiler alert) those who have become fans of the show while retaining their LotR loyalties would have the same reaction that Aragorn has in this meme.

16 Good Guy Sauron

via imgflip.cpm

When you think about it this post isn’t too far gone from the truth. It’s still hilarious but the characters treat the whole ring business as if their livelihoods matter on it. There were multiple rings handed out to different groups which would make Sauron a pretty neat dude as he kept people happy by giving them powerful gifts.

Orcs’ jobs are all part of their lives, so serving Sauron, in fact, gave their existence a purpose. And considering their population is in scores they and they work tirelessly for a specific goal, the whole process can be considered an industry. This would make Sauron a good industrialist who has created thousands of jobs. Turns out Sauron is the one preventing Middle-earth from sinking into a deep recession.

15 Tick, Tick, Tick

via pinterest.com

This one won’t change your perception of the movies as much as it would bring to notice the failures of the editing department. That right there is a really big mistake they didn’t catch but the creator of this meme has spun it to hilarious lengths.

This must be why Gandalf said he isn’t late, because he keeps track of time with his watch.

Gandalf’s famous line is repeated by millions of Lord of the Rings fans as it shows the wizard’s wisdom and penchant for words that have appropriate meaning. But this blooper will have us believe his words were to be taken in the literal sense. He won’t have much of an excuse next time he’s late now that w know he has a watch on his wrist.

14 Come Fly With Me

via pinterest.com

This post combines two of the most go-to points for the Lord of the Rings. Those who love to make memes concerning the series almost always employ the use of the ‘One does not simply walk into Mordor’ joke that is a safe bet to get a few laughs from readers. The other is the plot hole that is used a lot when mentioning things in The Lord of the Rings that didn’t make sense.

To get to Mount Doom the fellowship had to go through Mordor, which was a pretty big problem. Stuff happened along the way but in the end, Frodo and Sam reached Mount Doom and ended it all, only for Gandalf and his buddies to cruise right over on their extravagant eagles to rescue them. Unfortunately, no one had the bright idea to call these eagles earlier.

13 The Tag-Along Friends

via pinterest.com

In the Urban Dictionary, there is a definition for the ‘Merry and Pippin syndrome’. This is used to refer to characters who are a lot more stupid in the films than they are from the source material.

Merry and Pippin are really rather useless.

They had no value to the fellowship. Among the hobbits, Frodo is the ring-bearer while Sam ends up being the guy who does most of the work so he can be credited as being equally important to the cause. But Merry and Pippin’s only contribution to the fellowship is to act as comic reliefs. And this too overstays its welcome on many occasions. The only reason they tagged along for the adventure was to accompany Frodo but as they get separated with him quite soon their stay after that doesn’t do much for the plot.

12 What Does It Say?

via imgur.com

This meme is more for those people who aren't aware of The Lord of the Rings. Purists can use this to troll their non-fan friends as they will be clueless as to what is actually written on the ring and perhaps will be motivated to watch the movies.

In-universe, the way Gandalf attested the One Ring's genuineness was by seeing the inscription that appeared on it once it was burned and handed over to Frodo. The words that appear on the Ring are in the Black Speech of Mordor whose meaning is that the One ring is to rule all over the others and that darkness would bind them.

How hilarious would it have been, though, if something like this had appeared instead of the dark message from Sauron?

11 #Hobbitlife

via pastemagazine.com

With the rise in technology these days there are numerous, more imaginative memes that leave us laughing, and this one is among those on the list. The Lord of the Rings is set in a different universe entirely so it can’t be argued whether it should be interpreted as taking place in the past or future. But what if Middle-earth took place in actual Earth?

The modern version of our hobbit heroes would have used hashtags galore.

And in all honesty, wouldn’t that have made their journey all the more fun? They could have added to their daily stories such as how they ran into Gollum. Sam’s hashtag in this post where he assumes he might have to carry Frodo, in particular, is fitting. The selfie at the top of Mount Doom would definitely have been trending.

10 All Grown Up?

via imgflip.com

Happily, this doesn’t apply anymore as Macaulay Culkin has cleaned up his act in recent years, but back when this meme had been made he sure wasn’t a pretty sight to see. Macaulay Culkin had had a few personal problems and his choice of style didn’t really make him the most eye-catching guy to behold.

As it happened, Elijah Wood and Culkin both took that cute picture when they had been children and someone has compared their future with that of Frodo and Gollum. The idea behind this is for people to assume whoever isn’t looking so good can be comparable to the Smeagol of the future. But we’re still glad this meme isn’t applicable to today as Culkin looks superb now while Elijah Wood still doesn’t seem to have aged at all.

9 All That Flash

via pinterest.com

Although in this meme Gandalf is perplexed by Legolas’ flashy antics, he himself is guilty of this practice. To those who haven’t noticed, go back and watch the films and you’ll see how many times the characters tend to pose. Yes, it’s supposed to be an epic movie but the director, Peter Jackson, most probably instructed these guys to be as flashy as possible.

The characters’ fight scenes seemed the most flashy.

They would toss their hair around, throw arms up in synchronization as if it were highly choreographed. It all makes for some great viewing, though, as the feel of the situation is present. So next time you watch Lord of the Rings bear this in mind. You might learn a thing or two about how to pose.

8 Rules Don't Apply

via pinterest.com

This is just something on a lighter note rather than focusing on something from the movie. The whole 'walking into Mordor’ business really took off once the original meme with Boromir became popular. Following on from that there were many ‘crossovers’ with other characters over it too. But hardly anyone would argue with Chuck Norris should he feel the urge to take a stroll in Mordor.

Whoever is aware of pop culture memes would know of one of the biggest jokes in the last decade which comprised of the ‘Chuck Norris Facts.’ These would make fun on of the most outlandish things Chuck Norris is capable of. Should we accept all of Chuck’s feats, then not even Sauron would be brave enough to confront Norris.

7 All Those Years Ago

via imgflip.com

When The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring came out in 2001, the VHS was almost on its way out. In a few years it would be replaced completely by the DVD and beginning to become a distant memory. However, when the Lord of the Rings trilogy had concluded in 2003 the VHS tapes had still been available with many purchasing it.

Now those who have the series on tape are as old as Elves.

No one from the new generation knows what it was like to go to the market and buy or rent tapes, not when everything seems to be on Netflix these days. Thus, those of us who do remember watching the films on VHS are equivalent of the old ones from Middle-earth.

6 When LotR Takes Over Life

via pinterest.com

There comes a point when fanboyism knows no bounds and starts taking over one’s life. Be mindful never to sink so further down in media franchises as it interrupts normal life practice. This kid Alex very clearly became too obsessed with the movies and when faced with an exam question he seemingly knew nothing about he decided to wing it and make a mockery of the situation.

We’ve all been there when the only course of action seems to improvise but the wisdom from Middle-earth didn’t extend to Alex who drew Sauron’s eye into the question instead. It’s a shame the teacher didn’t play along, though, as the picture of Gandalf below needn’t have been necessary had the teacher instead written that as part of their critique.

5 The One Zone

via pinterest.com

Fortunately, many have seen this point over the years, but most did forget back in the day, when the One Ring was finally destroyed, that Frodo was more of a nuisance than a savior. He had been corrupted by the ring and had to bear most of the strain that came with carrying the ring so people tend to credit him greatly for those efforts.

But without Samwise Gamgee none of that would have been possible.

Sam does all the heavy lifting. He was even mindful of Gollum and never trusted him the whole time, turning out to be right about his intentions in the end too. Frodo did appreciate Sam but also treated him rather unfairly on occasion. But Sam never complained and by the point they reach Mount Doom has racked up a huge list of feats that went unacknowledged.

4 Never Gets Old

via memegenerator.net

The only way this meme might change your viewing experience of watching The Lord of the Rings is by pointing out how strange it is that you’ve still not grown tired of watching the same films over and over again. But fans never complain and are game for Lord of the Rings viewing every chance they get.

It’s a mighty accomplishment in a way that people can marathon watch movies that rack up big as far as run time is concerned. Watching the films back to back would mean a good portion of the day would be gone by but there are scores of people who have completed Lord of the Rings marathon on more than a few occasions. Add in The Hobbit trilogy and that’s some commitment.

3 We Can Relate

via memey.com

If the ending of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King hadn’t filled your heart glorious relief then seeing this meme will be a way to do just that the next time you watch it.

Just relate to the end as if you’ve finished an exam.

In many ways, Frodo’s journey to Mount Doom was an elaborate exam he had to pass. With so many trials and tribulations along the way, he had to rally and draw from his best resources to do away with the great disturbance. This is relatable to how many young viewers would feel as they battle studies to reach the exam where they have to undergo extremely difficult situations before it is all finally over. Frodo still had it better because he got flying eagles to carry him away.

2 Do We Know You?

via pinterest.com

Those who watched The Hobbit trilogy will have noticed just how fabulous the elves looked in the series. With the quality of camera and film-making having progressed since the Lord of the Rings main series had concluded, the characters seemed to be more extravagant to viewers. Thus, it would come as quite a shock to know that Lee Pace, perhaps the fanciest looking elf from The Hobbit series also played Ronan from Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Captain Marvel.

He’s pretty antagonistic in The Hobbit movies, even more so in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but is completely unrecognizable to those who aren’t aware it’s the same guy. Re-watching The Hobbit will make one appreciate his talent to mask himself in his characters.

1 Cry Babies

via

It’s hard to imagine that people haven’t caught on that characters in The Lord of the Rings cry. Like a lot. The ending of Return of the King is the biggest tearjerker of the series and perhaps win the Academy Award for Best Film because of this scene but those who haven’t noticed yet should be aware that these characters love bawling their eyes out any chance they get.

It’s more prevalent in the books but some of it influenced the movies.

Gandalf’s supposed demise at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring brought tears to the hobbits and this would be the start of many tragedies which would have their eyes leaking. Therefore, it was a tall task for the hobbits not to cry when Frodo was leaving, and, as expected, they did end up breaking.
