Ludi Lin is currently engaged in talks with New Line Cinema over the possibility of playing Liu Kang in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, according to a report from Variety.

The Chinese-Canadian actor, who plays Zack Taylor (the Black Ranger) in 2017's Power Rangers and Lance in the Striking Vipers episode of Black Mirrors, could be the man who lands the Liu Kang Role in the film adaptation of the popular video game after also playing Captain Murk in DC's Aquaman last year.

Lin is no stranger to martial arts where it pertains to acting. His recent Black Mirrors appearance saw him take on the role of a kung fu fighter, plus he's played a Power Ranger. He should be able to slot in as Liu Kang, one of the seven original characters from the first Mortal Kombat game that was launched by Midway in 1992.

The MK franchise has seen two movies since its inception. New Line's 1995 adaptation made over $120 million but the sequel that dropped two years later, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, didn't do as well, only grossing $50 million.

Warner Bros. bought Midway Games' assets in a bankruptcy court in 2009. And, following a long, painful wait, a third movie has been announced and is set to be released in March of 2021.

The film will be produced by James Wan and directed by Simon McQuoid. It's currently in pre-production and shooting will begin in Adelaide before the end of the year. It should mark the biggest production in South Australia's history.

Lin, who was born in China, was actually schooled in Australia and is now a Canadian citizen. He's worked with Wan before - the 42-year-old was the director of Aquaman - so that could count as a factor if he does seal the deal with New Line.

The actor will also feature in Son of the South, an upcoming film co-produced by Spike Lee and Netflix series The Ghost Bride.

His representatives have declined to comment, while Warner Bros. and New Line hadn't responded to Variety's request for confirmation at the time of writing.
