Nintendo has been having quite the year for exclusive games. As reported by Eurogamer, Luigi's Mansion 3 has quickly become the best selling Nintendo title of 2019. After having successful launches for both Super Mario Maker 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, it seems players were just dying to step back into the shoes of Mario's little brother.

In the UK sales chart last week, Luigi's Mansion 3 came second only to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. While it obviously wasn't going to top Activision's juggernaut series, that's not too shabby for a franchise that hasn't seen an entry in six years. It's also doubly impressive that physical sales doubled that of the previous entry, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

As noted by the publication, Luigi's Mansion 3 did have an extra day of sales over Nintendo's other two major 2019 releases. Coming out on a Thursday, that extra period of sales could be what contributed to such a healthy launch. At the same time, fans of the often overlooked plumber were likely clamoring to get back to ghost hunting with their favorite brother. It's really quite remarkable how Luigi's popularity has grown over the last decade.

What will be interesting to see is how Luigi's Mansion 3 is doing digitally. For sales figures, Nintendo does not divulge information regarding digital purchases. As noted last week, the company has stated it is seeing a spike of over 83% increased software revenue from digital spending. There's a very real chance that Luigi's Mansion 3 has outsold its physical counterpart with regards to digital copies.

While not a perfect game, Luigi's Mansion 3 is a remarkably polished and highly entertaining entry for the younger brother. Expanding on ideas present in both past titles, 3 shows a lot of creativity when it comes to concocting puzzles. It sometimes mirrors the ingenuity and complexity of a Zelda title, which makes for some devious puzzles.

With a smattering of multiplayer options and a fully-featured cooperative mode, Luigi's Mansion 3 may just end up being Nintendo's most successful game of 2019. Then again, Pokémon Sword and Shield releases next week and is bound to blow everything else away for a while. Such is Luigi's fate.
