MageQuit is a wild all-out magical brawl that enthusiastically embraces spell casting and big, big beards, and is finally leaving Steam’s Early Access for an official release to both PC and Xbox One. If you are looking for a light-hearted, playful take on the brawler genre that has significant build variety, this might be the perfect game for you.

The game is best described as a top-down wizard brawler that allows players to progressively tailor their build with spell drafting throughout each match. 10 mages battle it out online or locally, and each elimination makes your beards grow longer, and the wizard with the longest beard after 9 rounds wins! The game is completely about being the biggest, most dangerous Gandalf or Dumbledore you can be, and flouting the length of your beard with each round.

While each player begins the game with a simple set of spells, that changes right after the first of nine rounds, where players begin to draft elemental magic from a total of 35 spells, which provide you with a choice of up to 400 spell combinations. This leads to a rich variety of playstyles and mechanics to explore.

Like other brawler games in the genre, active aiming of spell projectiles is rewarded, as is dodging incoming attacks. Players will be able to control a spell’s trajectory from beginning to end, though they need to be careful not tunnel vision themselves, or one can easily be knocked out.

This is especially true when examining the types of battlegrounds where battle will occur. There are clearly significant environmental dangers to avoid, such as a literal “The floor is lava!” setting. We cannot wait to knock an opponent right into the burning lava, only to be rewarded with another inch on our beards!

Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Bowlcut Studios is a digital entertainment company that aims to bring back the nostalgia that came from their “brothers with bowl cuts” era of couch co-op multiplayer. “MageQuit is the product of our passions for creating and love of video games,” said Brett Pennings, developer and co-founder of Bowlcut Studios. ”A sense of humor and dedication to a vision have landed us where we are with MageQuit, and we couldn’t be more excited to share this title with gamers everywhere and watch them play the game in ways we never imagined.”

This will explain why the game includes local co-op, as there is clearly an intention for this to be a party game, which looks like it would be great fun among friends with bragging rights about who can consistently attain the longest beard.
