Magic: The Gathering's Commander format lets you play cards from its entire history, one of the few formats that allow you to do so (as long as they aren't banned or illegal). As such, every kind of deck archetype is playable, and there is no shortage of them.

One of these archetypes is Sacrifice. These are decks that are built around sacrificing permanents to gain value, oftentimes being able to recycle the cards you sacrifice to recur this. Unlike Aristocrats, which are built around sacrificing low-cost creatures, Sacrifice decks are built around sacrificing all kinds of permanents, including forcing your opponents to sacrifice as well.

10 Tergrid, God Of Fright

mtg tergrid god of fright front and backsides

Tergrid, God Of Fright is a mono-black commander that's built around gaining value off of forcing your opponent to discard and sacrifice permanents they control. The frontside, Tergrid, God Of Fright lets you take any nontoken permanent that was sacrificed by an opponent and put it on your field, giving you powerful creatures as well as giving you fodder for your own sacrifice outlets.

While the backside, Tergrid's Latern is powerful in 1v1 formats, since life totals are so high, it isn't too great in Commander. However, the frontside is the powerful one. Black has the most forced sacrifice cards out of all the colors, making it a perfect commander for Sacrifice decks.

9 The Gitrog Monster

A Golgari (green/black) commander, The Gitrog Monster is a unique Sacrifice commander in that it wants you to be sacrificing lands. It requires you to do so on your upkeep to keep The Gitrog Monster on the battlefield but will draw you a card when you do so.

There are many cards that let you sacrifice lands to gain value, generally putting more lands onto the battlefield for doing so. The Gitrong Monster generally runs a lot of creatures that can tap for mana, so if you have to sacrafice too many lands you'll still have mana sources.

8 Ziatora, The Incinerator

Ziatora the Incinerator

Ziatora, The Incinerator is a fantastic Sacrifice commander if you want to play creatures with high power. It's in Jund (black/red/green) colors, which is the best color combination for the archetype thanks to how many enablers there are. There are many ways to ramp in and make Treasure in Jund, which those tokens have to be sacrificed to get their effects off.

Ziatora, The Incinerator can make ramp itself, as when you sacrifice a creature with its effect you get three Treasure tokens. When combined with cards like Riveteers Asendacy, you can easily replace the creature you just sacrificed.

7 Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter

A Mardu (red/white/black) commander, Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter is a Sacrifice commander that's focused on artifacts. Since it has haste, you can take advantage of its effects as soon as it hits the field.

Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter is unique as it allows you to sacrifice your artifacts to rework them into something better suited for the game state. It can turn artifact creatures into ramp, or a noncreature artifact into creatures on the battlefield. Mardu has a lot of access to artifact support, making Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter a fantastic commander choice for Sacrifice decks in Mardu.

6 Titania, Protector Of Argoth

A mono-green commander built around sacrificing lands, Titania, Protector Of Argoth is a unique Sacrifice commander. It tends to run a lot of lands that sacrifice themselves for another land such as fetchlands since it triggers Titania's effect. Though not having access to black, green sacrificing lands for more lands is common, making Titania fantastic for a Sacrifice strategy.

Titania, Protector Of Argoth commander decks generally have a secondary strategy in landfall, since you will be playing a ton of lands and sacrificing other ones. Once you have a permanent that can play lands out of the graveyard, you can continuously play sacrifice lands from your graveyard to keep the Elementals coming.

5 Lurrus Of The Dream-Den

Banned in almost every format, Commander is one of three formats it's legal in. While it can be played as a Companion, Lurrus Of The Dream-Den is a fantastic Orzhov (white/black) commander in its own right. Since it lets you cast a permanent with a mana value two or less from your graveyard, you can continuously use cards that need to sacrifice themselves to trigger.

You don't have to worry about much ramp in a Lurrus commander deck, as most of your spells will have low casting costs. There is no shortage of one and two drops that you want to recycle, such as Selfless Spirit and Angelic Renewal to name a few.

4 Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest

Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest is a scary Golgari commander that becomes a threat quickly. It starts as a simple 2/2 with flying, but whenever a permanent is sacrificed it will get a +1/+1 counter. In dedicated Sacrifice decks, it's not uncommon for Mazirek to become giant as soon as it hits the field if you have a sacrifice outlet and permanents to sacrifice.

Since it has flying, Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest can win with commander damage in one swing if an opponent doesn't have a response or blocker to protect themselves with. Since you have access to the best removal spells, it's quite easy to take care of creatures that could block Mazirek to ensure it gets in.

3 Juri, Master Of The Revue

Juri, Master Of The Revue is the best commander for Sacrifice decks in Rakdos (red/black). Whenever you sacrifice a permanent, Juri will grow with +1/+1 counters and deal the power it has to a target when it dies. This allows Juri, Master Of The Revue to grow to substantial stats, as sacrificing is something Rakdos can do quite easily.

There are plenty of other Rakdos cards that help to build value and spread damage. You can even use cards like Fling and Kazuul's Fury to use Juri's power as an attack on an opponent directly.

2 Muldrotha, The Gravetide

One of the best Sacrifice commanders, Muldrotha, The Gravetide lets you recycle the cards you sacrificed right out of the graveyard. Muldrotha lets you play a land and cast a permanent of each type out of your graveyard, letting you re-use the permanents you want to keep sacrificing.

Muldrotha is in Sultai (black/green/blue) colors, giving you access to easy ramp, counterspells, and removal. On top of that, the colors have plenty of good permanents to sacrifice and recur, making Muldrotha, The Gravetide a fantastic, and popular, Sacrifice commander.

The most popular Sacrifice commander by a fair margin, Korvold, Fae-Cursed King is also the best Sacrifice commander. It's in Jund colors, giving you access to all the best colors for a sacrifice deck. Once it hits the field, Korvold turns into a giant value engine just by playing your deck.

Sacrificing any permanent will not only grow Korvold's power and toughness but let you draw a card each time as well. This allows you to constantly fill your hand with more spells to sacrifice more permanents. The cycle continues, allowing Korvold, Fae-Cursed King to do everything you want in a Sacrifice deck and more.
