The newest card set for Magic: The Gathering has been announced at San Diego’s Comic-Con International. This set, which was previously codenamed “Archery,” was unveiled as the Throne of Eldraine set at the Hasbro Media Breakfast.

Otherwise, very little is known about the Throne of Eldraine card set. Mark Rosewater, the head designer for Magic: The Gathering, hinted on his blog that there will be a planeswalker that will be the face of the set, and that the new setting of Eldraine is their home plane. There has been speculation as to which planeswalker it could be, since there are only so many whose home plane is unknown, but so far, there is no confirmation.

The announcement at the media breakfast consisted of a card embossed with: “The royal courts of Eldraine request the honor of your presence.” The inside of the card had an image of flying fairies, the Throne of Eldraine title, and the release date of September 28th-29th, 2019. For anything else, fans will have to wait for Rosewater’s Comic-Con panel.

The combination of fairy images and the courtly language of the card have led some to believe that the upcoming set will by fey-themed. Mark Rosewater denied these speculations, indicating that the fairy images will be in the card set, but he claimed that their importance is being overstated. Unfortunately, some expecting fairy courts to be the central theme of this set might be somewhat displeased.

Regardless of the Throne of Eldraine card set's nature and themes, it is sure to be a departure from the previous sets. Magic: The Gathering just finished a long storyline that was centered on planeswalker Nicol Bolas, and it involved the urban patchwork setting of Ravnica. This storyline culminated in the War of the Spark card set, which means that Throne of Eldraine will most likely be a new chapter in the Magic: The Gathering lore. Whether Eldraine is a more traditional high fantasy folklore setting or something else entirely, it is sure to be interesting. Fans will learn more when Mark Rosewater gives his panel on July 20th at San Diego Comic-Con, where all will be revealed.
