The legendary artist Greg Hildebrandt has returned to Magic: The Gathering after having left the tabletop game behind for almost 13 years. Hildebrandt's return to MTG can be seen with the card Grand Arbiter Augustin 4, which is an alt-art card as part of the Double Masters 2022 set, which is focused on reprints.

Grand Arbiter Augustin 4 first debuted in Dissension, the third set of the original Ravnica block that was released back in 2006, and is described as "conduit of justice, a will so disciplined that it dispenses justice without ego or remorse". It's seen several reprints since its original, but the Double Masters 2022 version is unique in that it features Greg Hinldebrandt's art for the first time since 2009.

The last card that Hildebrandt's art was featured on before this is Unbender Tine, a fairly uncommon artifact card that is mostly used in Commander as a combo piece seeing as it can untap other permanents. The description for Unbender Tine reads, "Creations made in madness may contain great power. The path to that power is as labyrinthine as the creator's mind". Some of the other last cards that Hildebrandt worked on include Recross The Paths, Kithkin Soldier, Bridge from Below, and Mire Boa.

Hildebrandt was one of the best known artists working on Magic: The Gathering back in the day along with his brother Tim who had a stroke in 2003. Hildebrandt went on making art under his name for a while, but stopped working on the tabletop game altogether just a few years after the death of his brother on June 11, 2006.

It remains to be seen whether Hildebrandt will continue to provide art for Magic: The Gathering cards, or if this is a special occasion that's unique to the Double Masters 2022 set, but it's cause for celebration to see one of the game's most beloved and influential artists make a return after 13 years. Neither Hildebrandt or MTG have commented on the former's return just yet.
