Double Masters 2022 is right around the corner, bringing hundreds of cards to Magic: The Gathering, most of them being reprints of some very powerful ones. But the legality of these cards is all over the place, with some of them being legal in multiple formats, including Standard, while others might only be legal in formats such as Vintage or Legacy.

If you're itching to open up some packs and see what drops, knowing the set might help you identify your most wanted cards. So if you're a fan of red, read on to find out which are some of the strongest red cards that Double Masters 2022 is bringing back to MTG.

6 Seasoned Pyromancer

Magic: The Gathering Seasoned Pyromancer full card with background

This creature card is a 2/2 Human Shaman with a cost of one generic and two red mana. When Seasoned Pyromancer enters the battlefield you discard two cards, then draw two cards. For each nonland card that you discard this way, create a 1/1 red Elemental creature token. The second ability that this creature has costs three generic and two red mana while also exiling this creature from your graveyard, in order to create two more 1/1 red Elemental creature tokens.

Even though it has not seen a lot of competitive play, Seasoned Pyromancer is a pretty popular addition to a lot of Commander decks, since it brings a lot of value in a small package. The synergies that it has with creatures like Kiki-Jiki Mirror Breaker or other creatures that can copy him make this a very viable card.

5 Twinflame

Magic: The Gathering Twinflame full card with background

This sorcery spell costs two generic and one red mana. It has the Strive effect and the main ability allows you to choose any number of target creatures that you control. Then for each of those creatures you get to create a copy of that creature which also gains haste. You have to exile those tokens at the beginning of the next end step.

Even though Twinflame can be used in a combo with multiple creatures such as Dockside Extortionist, Bladewing the Risen or Vadrok, Apex of Thunder, it has never seen any real competitive play. The fact that copying more than one creature makes this sorcery cost five mana makes it pretty lackluster, especially since there are creatures that are better at this such as Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker. All in all though you can definitely create some trouble on the board with the use of this card.

4 Alesha, Who Smiles at Death

Magic: The Gathering Alesha, Who Smiles at Death full card with background

A legendary creature with the Human Warrior subtypes, Alesha costs two generic and one red mana and is a 3/2 with first strike. Her main ability is that whenever Alesha attacks, you may pay two white/black mana. If you do, you can return target creature card with power two or less from your graveyard to the battlefield, tapped and attacking.

Alesha's abilities can be quite annoying for your opponent since you can keep bringing back small creatures from your graveyard whenever she attacks. She can combo quite well with creatures that have undying or any graveyard mechanics. She is currently a pretty popular option for Commander decks, since most creatures in this format are pretty powerful, even the cheaper ones.

3 Abbot of Keral Keep

Magic: The Gathering Abbot of Keral Keep full card with background

This Human Monk creature costs one generic and one red mana. A 2/1 with prowess, whenever this creature enters the battlefield, you get to exile the top card of your library. You then get to play that card until the end of the turn. While it might not look like a lot, the simple fact that he has prowess makes him quite the threat, only growing stronger the more mana you have to cast spells.

A decent card for any burn deck, Abbot of Keral Keep has seen some competitive play over the years. Its true strength is the fact that it can be played early in order to make use of its prowess ability, as well as later in the game when you might find that last burn card that you needed to kill your opponent.

2 Backdraft Hellkite

Magic: The Gathering Backdraft Hellkite full card with background

Backdraft Hellkite is a Dragon creature that costs three generic and two red mana. It is a 4/4 with flying which is pretty decent given the mana cost. But the true power of this card is in its main ability which allows you to recast instants or sorceries from your graveyard whenever he attacks. He would be a good fit in any deck that focuses on casting Dragons, since being able to recast removal spells from your graveyard can mean a lot in certain matchups.

While it can be a menacing creature on the board through its flying and power and toughness alone, its benefits don't stop there. Backdraft Hellkite has the flashback ability. It can be an excellent finisher for a burn deck if your opponent doesn't have any removal left. Casting multiple burns from your graveyard next turn will probably net you a win in most games.

1 Anger of the Gods

Magic: The Gathering Anger of the Gods full card with background

And last but definitely not least, we have this sorcery spell that costs one generic and two red mana. When played, Anger of the Gods deals three damage to each creature on the battlefield. If this damage were to kill any of those creatures, instead of going to the graveyard they will instead be exiled.

This card has pretty much replaced the classic red card Pyroclasm, which dealt two damage to all creatures for two mana. The added bonus of exiling all the creatures that would die is extremely important, especially in older formats where creatures that have undying are more prevalent. Pretty much any control deck that uses red can make good use of Anger of the Gods, at least as a sideboard card against aggro decks.
