Quick Links
Magic: The Gathering’s next major set is taking us back to revisit one of the most important events in its entire history: The Brothers’ War. We’ve seen elements of the war in past sets like Antiquities, but this is the first time we’ll see every grizzly detail, from the initial falling out between the powerful artificers Urza and Mishra, right through to the final confrontation that allowed Urza to become the Planeswalker he's better known as today.
On top of The Brothers’ War itself, the set is also bundling in lots of retro-framed reprints, both in packs themselves and in the two fully retro-framed Commander decks. With so much to juggle, this is one of the busiest preview seasons the game has ever seen. Here’s absolutely everything revealed for The Brothers’ War, updated daily with each new spoiler.
Updated November 4 at 10:12AM by Joe Parlock: As The Brothers' War's previews finally come to an end, we've got a set that is predictably high in artifacts, but also marks a notable increase to Standard's power level. Effects we rarely see in Magic are coming back that could make more than a few cards from it new staples in multiple formats. We've also seen the rest of the made-for-Commnader cards, one of which takes phasing and makes it one of the scariest types of removal the game has ever seen. Here is everything revealed on the final day of The Brothers' War's previews.
Final Day Previews
For the final day of previews, Wizards mostly focused on its Jumpstart boosters, showing off the new, exclusive cards found in them.

Thoughevery card you can find a Jumpstart booster for The Brothers' War is Standard-legal, there are a few exclusives you can only find there and not in Draft, Set, or Collector's boosters. These are Rescue Retriever, Geology Enthusiast, Terror Ballista, Artificer's Dragon, and Woodcaller Automaton. Some of these will still likely be big players in Standard, particularly Rescue Retriever and its ability to prevent damage to all of your other attacking Soldiers.
Outside, of the Jumpstart boosters, black sacrifice decks are getting yet more spice in the form of Thraxodemon, who for just three mana can turn any artifact or creature into card draw – which is especially good with all the Powerstone tokens you're going to have lying about. Also in black is Hostile Negotiations, which gives black its own take on Fact or Fiction-type effects. This isn't quite as powerful, though, as you have no control over what card goes in what pile, increasing the chance of you losing a game-winning card.
Though blue is known for its counter spells, cards that can counter activated or triggered abilities are much rarer. Defabricate gives us a new one that is flexible enough that it could join the ranks of Tale's End, Disallow, and Stifle in Commander.
Day Seven Previews
With the finish line of Brothers' War's previews in sight, Wizards decided to reveal that Tron isn't just coming to Commander, but also to Standard... kind of.

Three new creatures were revealed that pay homage to the Modern-defining Urza's lands, with Power Plant Worker, Mine Worker, and Tower Worker (the latter of which has yet to be revealed) all synergising with each other for huge profits. Creatures are a lot easier to remove than lands which means this likely won't ever be a staple archetype like Tron is, but even a smattering of that kind of power for Standard is huge.
We also got a new mono-white hatebears piece, with Myrel, Shield of Argive. Grand Abolisher is already a staple in Commander, so having that effect on a legendary creature who could be the commander for your deck is wild. It also could snowball out of control with dozens of Soldier tokens in just a few turns.
Keeper of the Cadence could be a surprisingly big player from this set, especially in a Standard format that's currently full of flashback from the two Innistrad sets. Though putting the card at the bottom of your opponent's library isn't as good as outright exiling it with something like a Tormod's Crypt, it is flexible, as you can also target your own spells you want to cast again instead.

Day six was a big day for artifact creatures, with Razorlash Transmogrant being a difficult-to-remove aggro piece that comes back bigger than it started, and Steel Seraph turning your other creatures into bigger threats. Persistent Baloth brings an effect we last saw on Zendikar Rising's Ancient Greenwarden back into Standard, while also giving Pioneer and Explorer landfall decks a new way to recur lands.
The Brothers' War is also shaping up to be surprisingly Tutor-heavy, thanks to a reprint of Fauna Shaman that brings it to both Standard and Pioneer. Wasteful Harvest gives you a different type of hand advantage, while also filling up your graveyard.
Finally, Awaken the Woods does something we've not seen before – a way to make tokens that are both creatures and lands. Though they still have summoning sickness, this is both a go-wide strategy and major ramp rolled into one.
Day Five Previews
With Magic 30 well and truly over, day five of The Brothers' War's previews were taken over by the community, with content creators unleashing a tidal wave of spoilers we rarely see outside the debut days.

A whopping 52 cards were revealed on day five, giving us a good look at what drafting the set is going to look like. In particular, we saw the white/blue Soldier archetype, with cards like Siege Veteran and Fortified Beachhead helping pump up your Soldiers before swinging in.
We also saw our replacement for Maddening Cacophany in Standard, with Terisian Mindbreaker milling half of your opponent's library whenever it attacks. With so many ways to dump creatures into your graveyard, and an unearth cost of just four mana, this could also see plenty of play in formats like Explorer and Pioneer, especially in Mill decks that often don't have big beaters to block with.
There are also a few useful reprints here, such as Disfigure being a great way to get rid of smaller creatures for just one mana, and Painful Quandary adding even more power for black's hand destruction. If you thought black's time at the top following Dominaria United was going to be over with The Brothers' War, it might be time to think again.
Day Four Previews
Day four of The Brothers' War's previews mostly took place across various panels at the Magic 30 convention. While we saw a lot of power, it does unfortunately mean proper images of the cards have not yet been released.

Day four gave us the third planeswalker of the set, with Saheeli, Filigree Master. She can protect herself with flying Thopter tokens, which is more than enough time to build up into potentially getting multiple activations of her -4 ability to reduce artifact costs even more. She also serves as a new use for Powerstone tokens, which could easily be tapped for her +1.
Urza's Sylex is going to be incredible in any flicker-focused deck as a way to pull Planeswalkers into your hand. As a note, if your opponent controls less than six lands, they simply choose all the lands they have instead.
We also got a look at some more artifact creatures with prototype, with Rust Goliath, Depth Charge Colossus, and Arcane Proxy. So far, it feels as if Wizards had played it very safe with prototype, with lots of costs only being a few mana short of the normal cost. Arcane Proxy's ability to copy any instant or sorcery in your graveyard is still going to be powerful though, regardless of if you cast it as a prototype or not.

While a lot of it has been the building blocks of the draft format, such as Soul Partition being this set's exiling enchantment, and Third Path Savant giving you a very expensive way to draw three cards, we also got a decent amount of power.
We had three new legendary creatures: Drafna, Founder of Lat-nam gives you a way to bounce your artifacts back to your hand to keep making copies of them on recasting, which could be ripe for abuse. There's also Ashnod, Flesh Mechanist; a creature with deathtouch for one mana is always good, but she'll play incredibly well with the current Standard format's decayed Zombies, as she gives yet another way to capitalise on their limited lifespan.
Somebody at Wizards must love green/blue Mutate decks, as Dominaria United's Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief has now been followed up by Tawnos, The Toymaker. Officially, he's a Beast and Bird tribal commander who make artifact copies of whatever you cast. In practice, most creatures with mutate are either Beasts or Birds, and this gives us yet another way to double up on mutate triggers.
One of the most interesting cards revealed on day three, though, was Hurkyl's Final Meditation. An instant that bounces all nonland permanents back to their owners' hands is automatically going to be compared to Cyclonic Rift, a Commander staple. But with the added ability to outright end the turn, Hurkyl's Meditation is a surprisingly great way to force an opponent to discard lots of their key game pieces, provided you have a way to cast it on their turn.
Day Two Previews
Day two of The Brothers' War's previews brought us a cycle of Command spells, all of which are quite powerful.

Urza's Command could be the difference between losing in combat and surviving another turn, plus producing an artifact creature that serves as a payoff for your artifact strategies is fantastic. Mishra's Command is very much a red card doing red things, with lots of direct Kayla's Command plays into white's go-wide strategies by making lots of tokens, but it also giving you an element of ramp will make it highly playable in Standard. Finally, Gix's Command counteracts Kayla by destroying all small creatures, and you can force an entire Commander pod to sacrifice their bigger creatures.
There are also two big reprints in these reveals, with Monastery Swiftspear getting its second reprint in only a few months, having been the big hit for Pauper in Double Masters 2022. Blast Zone is also entering Standard, serving as a slow but inevitable board wipe that really highlights how the current Standard has no ways to get rid of lands.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if there are four or more land cards in your graveyard and you both own and control Titania, VOice of Gaea and a land named Argoth, Sanctum of Nature, exile them, then meld them into Titania, Gaea Incarnate. |
|
Titania, Gaea Incarnate |
Legendary creature – Elemental Avatar – */*: Vigilance, reach, trample, haste. Titania, Gaea Incarnate's power and toughness are each equal to the number of lands you control. When Titania enters the battlefield, return all land cards from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped. Three generic, one green: Put four +1/+1 counters on target land you control. It becomes a 0/0 Elemental creature with haste. It's still a land. |
|
Urza, Prince Of Kroog |
Two generic, one white, one blue legendary creature – Human Artificer – 2/3: Artifact creatures you control get +2/+2. Six generic: Create a token that's a copy of target artifact you control, except it's a 1/1 Soldier creature in addition to its other types. |
|
Mishra, Tamer of Mak Fawa |
Three generic, one black, one red legendary creature – Human Artificer – 4/4: Permanents you control have "Ward — Sacrifice a permanent." Each artifact card in your graveyard has unearth: one generic, one black, one red. (One generic, one black, one red: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step or if it would leave the battlefield. Unearth only as a sorcery.) |
|
Phyrexian Fleshgorger |
Seven generic artifact creature – Phyrexian Wurm – 7/5: Menace, lifelink Ward — Pay life equal to Phyrexian Fleshgorger's power. Prototype: One generic, two black – 3/3 (You may cast this spell with different mana cost, colour, and size. It keeps its abilities and types.) |
|
Ashnod's Harvester |
Two generic artifact creature – Construct – 3/1: Whenever Ashnod's Harvester attacks, exile target card from a graveyard. Unearth: one generic, one black (One generic, one black: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step or if it would leave the battlefield. Unearth only as a sorcery.) |
|
Scrapwork Cohort |
Four generic artifact creature – Soldier – 3/1: When Scrapwork Cohort enters the battlefield, create a 1/1 colourless Soldier artifact creature token. Unearth: two generic, one white (Two generic, one white: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step or if it would leave the battlefield. Unearth only as a sorcery.) |
|
Argoth, Sanctum Of Nature |
Land Argoth, Sanctum Of Nature enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a legendary green creature. Tap: add one green mana. Two generic, two green, tap: Create a 2/2 green Bear creature token, then mill three cards. Activate only as a sorcery. (Melds with Titania, Voice of Gaea.) |
Phyrexian Fleshgorger introduces the brand-new prototype mechanic, that lets you play a smaller casting cost in exchange for a different colour and different size version of an artifact. It's a surprisingly powerful ability, as three mana for a menace, lifelink 3/3 with ward is by no means bad.
Meanwhile, Urza, Powerstone Prodigy and Splitting The Powerstone both show off Powerstone artifact tokens – something Karn, Living Legacy teased in Dominaria United. Powerstones can tap for mana (as opposed to sacrifice to make them like Treasure), but can't be used to cast nonartifact spells.
For the two true returning mechanics, we've got Titania, Gaea Incarnate revealing the final melded pair of the set with a terrifyingly strong graveyard lands-matter legendary that shouldn't be too difficult to set up thanks to mono-green's land ramping abilities.
Finally, unearth is shown off in two cards, but the most interesting one is Scrapwork Cohort. Unearth allows you to return a permanent to the battlefield with haste, and then exile it at the beginning of the next end step. More importantly, this is the first time unearth has been seen with a white cost which, considering how few ways there are to give creatures haste in a mono-white deck, is a big new tool for it.
We also got a new (or, rather, very old) Phyrexian Praetor, with Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor. This feels almost like a follow-up to Dominaria United's Sheoldred, The Apocalypse, as both are mono-black Phyrexian Praetors that link card draw to losing life. In one-on-one formats, Gix will only ever benefit you, but in Commander and other multiplayer games its promise of card draw might just be enough to dissuade your opponents from attacking you. This'll be an interesting card to slot into a Breena, The Demagogue deck to keep everyone looking at each other instead of you.
Spoilers Revealed Before Preview Season
While the preview season will reveal the vast majority of The Brothers' War, a few cards have already been shown off in advance.

|
Urza, Lord Protector |
One generic, one white, one blue legendary creature – Human Artificer – 2/4: Artifact, instant, and sorcery spells you cast cost one generic less to cast. Seven generic: If you both own and control Urza, Lord Protector and an artifact named The Mightstone and Weakstone, exile them, then meld them into Urza, Planeswalker. Activate only as a sorcery. |
|
Urza, Planeswalker |

(You may activate the same ability twice.) +2: Artifact, instant, and sorcery spells you cast this turn cost two less to cast. You gain two life. +1: Draw two cards, then discard a card. +0: Create two 1/1 colorless Soldier artifact creature tokens. -3: Exile target nonland permanent. -10: Artifacts and Planeswalkers you control gain indestructible until end of turn. |
Mishra, Claimed by Gix |
Two generic, one black, one red legendary creature – Phyrexian Human Artificer – 3/5: Whenever you attack, each opponent loses X life and you gain X life, where X is the number of attacking creatures. If Mishra, Claimed by Gix and a creature named Phyrexian Dragon Engine are attacking, and you both own and control them, exile them, then meld them into Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia. It enters the battlefield tapped and attacking. |
|
Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia |
Legendary artifact creature – Phyrexian Artificer – 9/9: Whenever Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia enters the battlefield or attacks, choose three —
|
|
Queen Kayla bin-Kroog |
One generic, one red, one white legendary creature – Human Noble – 2/3: Four generic, tap: Discard all the cards in your hand, then draw that many cards. You may choose an artifact or creature card with mana value one you discarded this way, then do the same for artifact or creature cards with mana values two and three. Return those cards to the battlefield. Activate only as a sorcery. |
|
Surge Engine |
Two generic artifact creature – Construct – 3/2: Defender One blue: Surge Engine loses defender and gains "This creature can't be blocked". Two generic, one blue: Surge Engine becomes blue and has base power and toughness 5/4. Activate only if Surge Engine doesn't have defender. Four generic, two blue: Draw three cards. |

Tap: add two colourless mana. This mana can't be spent to cast nonartifact spells. (Melds with Urza, Lord Protector.) |
|
Phyrexian Dragon Engine |
Three generic artifact creature – Phyrexian Dragon – 2/2: Double strike When Phyrexian Dragon enters the battlefield from your graveyard, you may discard your hand. If you do, draw three cards. Unearth: three generic, two red. (Melds with Mishra, Claimed by Gix.) |
|
Mishra's Foundry |
Land Tap: add one colourless mana. Two generic: Mishra's Foundry becomes a 2/2 Assembly-Worker artifact creature until end of turn. It's still a land. One generic, tap: Target attacking Assembly-Worker gets +2/+2 until end of turn. |
The highlights of these are easily the four cards with meld. Urza, Lord Protector and The Mightstone and Weakstone melding together to form Urza, Planeswalker, a ridiculously powerful Planeswalker that can wipe the entire board in just two turns thanks to its ability to use two loyalty abilities each turn.
Meanwhile, Mishra, Claimed by Gix and Phyrexian Dragon Engine meld to make Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia. It's slightly odd that Mishra, Lost to Phyrexia can outright destroy Urza, Planeswalker considering the way the Brothers' War ended, but it is still a scarily strong card with enough options to justify the hoops you need to jump through to meld into it.
It's also worth pointing out Surge Engine, which for just one blue mana becomes an unblockable three damage each turn. This set is going to be full of all kinds of artifact creatures, but this is already looking like it could be an underrated winner.
Every The Brothers' War Commander Spoiler
The Brothers' War's two Commander decks are very different to the usual Commander tie-ins we see with every release. This is the first time Commander precons have been completely retro framed, which includes reprints of existing cards in the old, retro border for the first time.
There are two decks: the white, blue, and black Urza's Iron Alliance, lead by Urza, Chief Artificer, and Mishra's Burnished Banner, a blue, black and red deck featuring Mishra, Eminent One.
There are also a series of made-for-Commander cards that can be found in Set and Collector's booster packs. These don't feature the same retro frame as the decks themselves, but use the same set code and symbol, meaning they can't be played in anything other than Vintage, Legacy, and Commander.
Made-For-Commander Cards
Each set features a number of made-for-Commander cards found in Set booster packs. These aren't found in either reconstructed deck, but also have the BRC set code and are only playable in Commander, Vintage, and Legacy.

Whenever an artifact an opponent controls is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, Sardian Avenger deals one damage to that player. |

|
|

|

Whenever you gain life, each Advisor, Artificer, and Monk you control gains vigilance and gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is the amount of life you gained. Tap three untapped Advisors, Artificers, and/or Monks you control: Draw a card. |
|
Staff of Titania |
Two generic artifact – Equipment: Equipped creature gets +X/+X, where X is the number of Forests you control. Whenever equipped creature attacks, create a 1/1 green Forest Dryad land creature token. (It's affected by summoning sickness.) Equip: three generic. |
|
Urza's Workshop |
Land – Urza's: Tap: Add colourless. Metalcraft — Tap: Add one colourless mana for each Urza's land you control. Activate only if you control three or more artifacts. |
In Commander, The Brothers' War is a potential win condition. You can use the second step to force an opponent to knock another out through combat while you quietly build up on artifacts, before unleashing hell on the remaining two players for the last step.
The fact that this turns two players against each other, instead of just goading the whole table, is also an interesting political piece to either break up alliances or form your own with the sole remaining player.
Meanwhile, Rootpath Pruifier is the first green card to be found anywhere in the Brothers' War Commander set, and it is absolutely wild. Turning every land in your deck into a basic is incredible, as it allows you to fetch literally any land with the likes of a Cultivate.
No matter if it's a Ghost Quarter, Scalding Tarn, Orzhov Bassilica, or even one of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's channel lands, making them all basic in addition to their other types is going to wind up with some ludicrous interactions.
Disciple of Caelus Nin gives phasing a new, scary use as a removal tool. Play this after someone casts a Teferi's Protection, and you're now holding their entire mana base to random for as long as Caelus Nin is in play. Considering phasing has been used as a way to protect your own pieces recently, this could be a terrifyingly powerful way to control the board and keep it locked up for as long as you need.
Finally, Urza's Workshop introduces a new Tron land to the one format that doesn't really have a Tron deck archetype. It likely won't be enough to give Commander a viable Tron deck, but a full suite of Urza lands will make you 14 colourless mana, which is still rather good for minimal effort.
Urza's Iron Alliance
Urza's Iron Alliance is a go-wide deck where your aim is to produce as many artifact creatures as possible. For that, Urza, Chief Artificer is a fantastic commander, thanks to his ability to make tokens that buff each other up every single turn. Using Urza alongside something like March of Progress, which can be overloaded to copy every single one of your artifact creatures, can make for a very quick game.
Backing up Urza is Tawnos, Solemn Survivor, a rare artifact token-centric commander. Though his second ability does have a hefty cost, his first ability is able to copy artifact tokens while also fueling your graveyard strategies is incredible.
In recent years, Wizards has been focusing on giving white better ways to ramp land in Commander, with cards like Archaeomancer's Map and Deep Gnome Terramancer helping reduce the gap between it and other colours. Scholar of New Horizons is the latest in this family, with an incredibly cheap and easily repeatable effect.

The full decklist:
Mishra's Burnished Banner
The blue, black and red Mishra's Burnished Banner is all about taking your artifacts and sacrificing them for profit. Whether that's pulling them back out of the graveyard later on, or using a card Scavenged Brawler from the graveyard to buff up your in-play creatures.
This deck's secondary commander is Ashnod the Uncaring, which can double the effects of you sacrificing your artifacts. However, it doesn't include mana abilities, such as sacrificing a Treasure to produce mana.
One of the best cards in this deck is a new mono-black board wipe, Terisiare's Devastation. Not only can you make an immense number of Powerstone tokens, the resulting -X/-X will often be enough to wipe out all but the biggest indestructible creatures.

Every Retro-Framed Artifact Reprint Spoiler
Last year's Strixhaven: School Of Mages saw the debut of the Mystical Archive. It was subset found in Strixhaven booster packs that included reprints of various instants and sorceries without needing to reintroduce them to the Standard format, and it proved a big hit. For Brothers' War, we're getting a spiritual successor to the Mystical Archive, with the less-catchily named Retro-Framed Artifact Reprints.
Although these reprints can be found in Draft, Set, and Collector's boosters, only Collector's boosters will have the chance of pulling an exclusive double rainbow foils, which features a serial code to make the card unique. As these reprints have their own set code (BRR, instead of the main set's BRO), these printings don't change any format legality for individual cards – they remain legal in the same formats they were before Brothers' War.
