After two sets facing off against the Phyrexian threat, it’s time for Magic: The Gathering to head to their home turf and descend into the machine hell itself in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. With gruesome imagery, body horror galore, and the return of the always-scary poison counters, All Will Be One looks set to be a memorably grim, powerful set that has more than a few surprises.

RELATED: What To Buy For Magic: The Gathering

Phyrexia: All Will Be One’s preview season runs from January 17 through January 25, during which we’ll see everything the set has to offer, both in booster packs and in its two Commander decks. Expect plenty of oil and gore, and check back each day to see what else Elesh Norn is cooking up for us when Phyrexia: All Will Be One launches on February 10.

Although many of the rare cards from Phyrexia were accidentally included in Dominaria Remastered booster packs, TheGamer will be following Wizards of the Coast’s lead and only be including cards once they’ve been formally revealed.

Updated January 26 at 07:18AM by Joe Parlock: Phyrexia: All Will Be One's preview season is officially over, with the last few noteworthy cards having been revealed. The final day gave us the last two of the Dominus Cycle, and two unassuming creatures that could be a nightmare when Phyrexia enters the Standard format.

Day Nine Previews

A red, triangular monster with eight white faces and red eyes.
Crawling Chorus by Michael Walsh

The final day of Phyrexia's preview season was less of a bang and more of a whimper, with a handful of cards to cap things off. Two of those things are the final Dominus creatures, though, so there's still a lot of spice to be found.

Three generic, Remove three oil counters from Migloz: Destroy target artifact or enchantment.

Of course, the final two Dominus are the big draw of day nine, completing a cycle of some of the strongest legendary creatures we've seen in Standard in a fair while. Hunger Dominus is going to be excellent in mono-green Stompy decks, but it's also a good way to make your toxic Mites go a smidge further – you and your opponent will no longer be able to trade tokens in combat, keeping yours alive to swing again.

Mayhem Dominus is great too, becoming a more than viable, if expensive, tool for Burn decks. Maybe with this we'll see Burn pick up more players in Commander, if not in the usual mono-red aggro decks of Standard.

Necrosquito counts token artifacts being sacrificed for its ability, making it a good pick for the black midrange decks that have dominated the Standard meta, while the sheer number of proliferate cards in All Will Be One will make Voidwing Hybrid a nasty and tough-to-deal-with creature for blue/black decks.

Though Phyrexia has had plenty of excellent cards for Commander, it's been somewhat slim on legendary creatures to build around.

However, day eight finally gave us the goods and gave us cards like the artifact creature-loving Unctus, Grand Metatect; the incredible difficult to remove Thrun, Breaker of Silence; and go-wide toxic commander with Ria Ivor, Bane of Bladehold.

Perhaps the scariest of them all is the black Drivnod, Carnage Dominus. Teysa Karlov decks have a new death trigger doubler to play with, and it having a way to make itself indestructible makes it more than viable as a new Artistocrats commander in its own regard.

Sticking in Commander, the namesake of the set was revealed, and All Will Be One could be a game-winner. There are lots of cards that gain counters when an opponent is dealt damage, such as War Elemental and Talon of Pain.

By far the best way to pull this off is with The Red Terror from the Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks – a one-card combo that just needs your always-available commander is absolutely wild, making All Will Be One a big, big threat in any Commander game from now on.

Easily the biggest card of day seven is Ichormoon Gauntlet. Planeswalker-heavy Superfriends decks have been creeping into a variety of formats recently, thanks to cards like The Wandering Emperor and Teferi, Hero of Dominaria. Now they have a way to potentially get infinite extra turns, as long as you're able to hit a critical mass of 'walkers to proliferate with.

Even without infinite turns, Ichormoon Gauntlet is still fantastic. Any Planeswalker who lacks a Loyalty-giving ability, like Narset, Parter of Veils, now has a way to build up Loyalty and remain in play for longer. It's so good that it's easy to miss that second ability, which does a mini-proliferate whenever you cast a noncreature spell.

We also saw the next Dominus, with Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus. This is more of a straight proliferate-doubler, and with no way for itself to proliferate it likely won't be used often as a commander. But in other formats where you'll be using oil, loyalty, and other counters more frequently, this could be a real monster.

Vat of Rebirth is scary, purely because it lacks the word "nontoken" in its ability. Artifact tokens still hit the graveyard before they're removed from the game, so Treasure, Clue, Food, Blood, and other artifact tokens will still give this an oil counter. Whether you want a Dockside Extortionist every turn in Commander, or just a way to get Mayhem Devil back from your graveyard in your black/red Sacrifice deck in Explorer, this is going to have a lot of uses.

Finally, Phyrexian Champion is the latest in a long line of damage-reflecting Stuffy Doll-type effects. However, it's attached to a 5/5 flier instead of a small, often zero-power creature, and only for four white mana. It'll be interesting to see how mono-white decks make use of this ability, considering it often lacks ways to deal direct damage to your own creatures, but it will definitely dissuade your opponent from attacking when it's on the battlefield.

Day Six Previews

A multicoloured insect with white plating.
Atraxa's Skitterfang by Billy Christian

Another quiet day gives us one of the most fun creature type lines in the entire set – Phyrexian Jellyfish. There's also a great way to take out mana dorks, and a reworked version of a Brothers' War card that will work in any Commander deck.

Four generic, two blue creature – Phyrexian Jellyfish – 4/4:

Watchful Blisterzoa enters the battlefield with an oil counter on it.

When Watchful Blisterzoa dies, draw cards equal to the number of oil counters on it.

Ambulatory Edifice

Ambulatory Edifice

Two generic, one black artifact creature – Phyrexian Construct – 3/2:

When Ambulatory Edifice enters the battlefield enters the battlefield, you may pay two life. If you do, target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn.

Atraxa's Skitterfang

Atraxa's Skitterfang

Three generic artifact creature – Phyrexian Insect – 2/2:

Atraxa's Skitterfang enters the battlefield with three oil counter on it.

At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may remove an oil counter from Atraxa's Skitterdang. When you do, target creature you control gains your choice of flying, vigilance, deathtouch or lifeline until end of turn.

Day six showed us more of what oil counters can do in this set, with two cards that could be powerful if you can get your proliferation sorted in advance.

Watchful Blisterzoa is a bit expensive at six mana, and only gives you one card when if it dies straight away. It has a lot of hoops to jump through to be worth it in constructed formats, but with a few bits of proliferation you could be getting far, far more in limited. It also pairs especially well with Ichorplate Golem, as the latter ensures the Blisterzoa will be entering with two counters instead of just one.

Meanwhile, Atraxa's Skitterfang is incredibly similar to one of the prototype artifacts we saw in The Brothers' War: Steel Seraph. Both grant temporary abilities to a creature at the start of combat, making them great in everything from Voltron to keywords-matter decks. Atraxa's Skitterfang does require you to use oil counters to spread the abilities out, but it's also half the mana cost of Steel Seraph, and is completely colourless, letting you slot it into any Commander deck.

Finally, the only card without oil counters we saw on day six was the excellently-named Ambulatory Edifice. Although it's effectively a vanilla creature after its first turn, knocking out a 1/1 creature can be powerful, especially in All Will Be One where there are so many 1/1 Mites with toxic running around. This is also a set with Elesh Norn, Mother Of Machines' enters-the-battlefield-doubling effect, and so even small one-off effects like Ambulatory Edifice's can be strong.

Day Five Previews

A metal forest with black tendrils.
Mycosynth Gardens by Andrew Mar

The weekend is always a quiet time for MTG's previews, but with only two cards revealed, this is easily one of the smallest days for any recent set.

Magmatic Sprinter

Magmatic Sprinter

One generic, one red creature – Phyrexian Warrior – 3/2:

Haste

When Magmatic Sprinter enters the battlefield, put two oil counters on target artifact or creature you control.

At the beginning of your end step, return Magmatic Sprinter to its owner's hand unless you remove two oil counters from it.

The Mycosynth Gardens

The Mycosynth Gardens

Land – Sphere:

Tap: Add one colourless mana.

One generic, tap: Add one mana of any colour.

X generic, tap: The Mycosynth Gardens becomes a copy of target nontoken artifact you control with mana value X.

Though we've only got two cards today, both of them are much more interesting than they may first seem.

Magmatic Sprinter feels like a more expensive take on Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's Reinforced Ronin, as both are red, hasty creatures that return to your hand at the end of the turn. Three mana for an attacker and a way to put oil counters on your other permanents seems good, although it's unlikely it'll see as much play in aggro decks as Reinforced Ronin.

Meanwhile, the Mycosynth Gardens shows off the new Sphere land type, which represents the nine layers of Phyrexia. The last ability to become a copy of a nontoken artifact makes this a particularly good early play in Commander. It's worth pointing out that the Mycosynth Garden's copy ability isn't until the end of the turn – it's permanent.

For example, you can copy a Mana Crypt for free, giving you access to four colourless mana on the first turn. We did it, Magic. We broke Mana Crypt. If you'd rather avoid that potential six damage on your next turn, using this to cast a Sol Ring on your first turn, then copying it on the next is also a great play that is available to any Commander.

Pacifism is one of Magic's most-repeated enchantment spells, but it seems its day is finally up with the strictly better Compleat Devotion. Costing the same as Pacifism, it can not just shut down a creature attacking or blocking, but prevents any permanent from using its activated abilities.

While it won't stop triggered abilities, meaning Sheoldred, The Apocalypse can still be annoying in Standard, it can completely turn off other threats like Bloodtithe Harvester, or, in Pioneer and Explorer, the ever-problematic Witch's Oven.

The five Skullbomb cards seem like good ways to shore up card draw in limited formats, and also work nicely in sacrifice-heavy archetypes elsewhere. They're nice and cheap, can sacrifice themselves straight away, and, if you do wait for that second ability, still give you draw as an incidental bonus.

Golems have been an unassuming creature type for a long time, but between Phyrexia and The Brothers' War it looks like it's time for these artifact creatures to shine. In particular, Incubation Bag is a great way to repeatedly pump out Golems each turn, especially if you have a few Powerstone tokens lying around not getting used. Finally, there's also Ichorplate Golem, which will help speed up oil counter strategies a lot.

Tap, Remove ten oil counters from among permanents you control and sacrifice The Filigree Sylex: It deals 10 damage to any target.

Much of what we saw on day three is designed more with limited play in mind than constructed. Cards like Bilious Skulldweller serve as the typical one-mana deathtouch for the set, while Urabrask's Anointer will be a good payoff for all those oil counters you're able to proliferate.

It may look unassuming to newer players, but Gleeful Demolition could prove to be a big player. It's incredibly flexible, serving as basic, cheap artifact removal or helping power up Goblin decks with three tokens to work with. Goblins may not be a big thing in Standard right now, but in other formats like Pioneer or Modern, we could see Gleeful Demolition pick up traction.

We also saw Kethek, Crucible Goliath. A new take on sacrifice commanders, it giving your creatures a pseudo-cascade could be absolutely incredible in Standard and Pioneer red/black decks, and in Commander could have some scary uses.

Finally, The Filigree Sylex is the third set in a row we've had a new Sylex card. However, this one might be best served keeping away from the Phyrexian oil, as tapping and sacrificing it straight away will blow up every zero-cost nonland permanent, which also includes tokens. Wiping the board of all of these without touching your bigger, more expensive pieces, particularly in a token-heavy set like All Will Be One, makes it almost not worth building up to that ten damage.

Day Two Previews

Atraxa, Grand Unifier by Marta Nael

While day two of previews was mostly focused on showing off the two Commander decks launching alongside Phyrexia, we also had a few reveals from the main set as well.

Zenith Chronicler

Zenith Chronicler

Two generic artifact creature – Phyrexian Construct – 3/1:

Whenever a player casts their first multicolored spell each turn, each other player draws a card.

Easily the most noteworthy reveal here is Atraxa, Grand Unifier. Its ability isn't quite as scary as the original Atraxa card's, but it does give us one massive reveal for an entirely new card type.

We don't know what battles are yet, but it is the first new card type introduced to Magic since 2007, when we were introduced to Planeswalker cards for the first time. It's possible we'll see more about battles in March of the Machine, but they'd also be fitting for Lord Of The Rings: Tales of Middle-earth launching later this year.

The second big card is Sword Of Forge And Frontier, the latest in the very popular Sword cycle. This one gives your creature from red and green, as well as allows for impulsive draw almost every turn, provided you can keep swinging. The swords are some of the most popular equipment cards in the game, so it's nice to see a new one here.

Mirran Safehouse has the potentially to be easily broken wide open. It only copies activate abilities, meaning it can be a fetch land, a manland, or something spicier like a Field of Ruin all on its own. It not being a land itself also means it's incredible ramp, provided somebody has some good lands in their graveyard.

Finally, Noxious Assault is a potential win condition for green decks. It's not quite a Triumph of the Hordes or Craterhoof Behemoth, but it is a way to force your opponent to choose between dying to combat damage or poison counters, which could be gnarly.

Immediately, this set looks poised to be much more powerful than the current Standard format, with cards like Mondrak, Glory Dominus giving Standard a new token-doubling effect like Anointed Procession, and Conduit of Worlds speeding up land-based decks with a new take on Crucible of Worlds.

We also saw the debut of a new creature type, Mites, that are small, expendable ways to dish out poison counters. Skrelv, Defector Mite is the only nontoken Mite we've got so far, but with enough support in the set we could see these little bugs pop up across a handful of formats.

A big pull for both Standard and Pioneer is the reprint of Phyrexian Arena, which has long been a staple for black card draw in older formats – especially Commander.

Finally, of course, is the last of the ten Planeswalkers in the set, with a completeated Jace, The Perfected Mind. His ability will be great for Standard mill decks, although compared to some of his older cards, like Jace the Mind Sculptor that this card is a direct reference to, it doesn't quite seem as strong. Still, Jace the Face is a Phyrexian now, which is incredibly scary for lore fans.

One white, one blue, one black, one red, one green, Tap: Put three +1/+1 counters on each Myr you control. Activate only during your turn.

There's a very strong artifact creature subtheme with with All Will Be One Commander exclusives, with cards like Lux Artillery giving them sunburst, and Mirage Mockery making copies of both an artifact and a nonartifact creature.

There are other, noncreature artifact-loving cards too, with Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant allowing you to cheat other artifacts out for a lot cheaper, and Monumental Corruption draining your opponent.

One surprising break from this artifact theme is Synthesis Pod, which takes the popular 'Pod' strategy of exiling to find other, better things, and applies it to spells while they're still on the stack. The neat thing is this works with permanent spells as well as instants or sorceries, giving you an interesting way of using your commander without it ever needing to even hit the battlefield.

The last noteworthy card is Urtet, Remnant of Memnarch. Not only is this a treat for lore fans, as it shows what became of the former corrupted guardian of Mirrodin, it's the first legendary Myr creature, giving the popular creature type its own commander to play with.As Myrs often tap to produce mana, Urtet does everything: helps you ramp, buffs up your board, and can get scarily big once you're able to produce mana of every colour.

Corrupting Influence is a white/black/green deck designed to finally give Phyrexians and poison counters something to do in Commander. Both have famously struggled to find a place in the format, due to the fear poison can cause when it lands on a table.

Fortunately, the new corrupted mechanic helps with this, by encouraging you to spread poison around instead of focusing one player and becoming the enemy of the table. There are tons of good corrupted effects, such as stealing creatures from your opponent's graveyards, putting lands onto the battlefield, or tapping for lots more mana.

The alternate commander for the deck is Vishgraz, the Doomhive. Vishgraz doesn't care about corrupted abilities, and instead wants to just put as many poison counters on anybody as possible to make it grow nice and big to smash your opponents directly.

Two generic, one red, one white, Tap an untapped Rebel you control: Return Otharri from your graveyard to the battlefield tapped.

The red/white Rebellion Rising deck takes a break from the Phyrexians, and instead looks at the Mirran rebellion that opposes them. This is a "go-wide token deck" with a particular focus on Equipment, the For Mirrodin! mechanic, and a few Rebel creature type synergies.

Red/white isn't often known for big, go-wide decks like this, and the pressure to play aggressively and attack every turn to get card advantage should keep a Commander game flowing smoothly. Some of the For Mirrodin! equipment in this deck is wild, like Kemba's Banner rewarding you for having such a big board state, and Hexplate Wallbreaker giving you an entire second combat phase.

Also worth pointing out is Clever Concealment, a new anti-board wipe tool that can be cast for just two white if you have even two creatures. Unfortunately it isn't quite at the same power as a Teferi's Protection, as you'll still be left defenseless until your next turn, but it's still a nice answer to a Farewell or Vanquish the Horde.

The secondary commander for this deck isn't a Rebel, but a Phoenix. Otharri, Suns' Glory is a scarily persistent commander, as the counters it cares about are put on you rather than it. No amount of removal can stop Otharri from pumping out a ton of tokens, and even if your opponents do take it out, you can bypass the command tax by playing it from your graveyard instead.
