Update: GameSpot has just revealed the first four cards, confirming that this is, at least partially, a reprint set giving older cards new, Arcane-themed flavours.

The four cards announced so far are the white removal staple Path to Exile, the counterspell Counterflux, the mana rock Thran Dynamo, and one of blue's most annoying card draw enchantments, Rhystic Study.

The latter two have been given new names, although they will be treated as the same as their Magic versions for deckbuilding rules. Thran Dynamo is now called "The Hexcore", while Rhystic Study is "Unstable Harmonics".

Crucially, this is only the second time Rhystic Study has been reprinted without the art of Terese Nielsen, and the previous one was a highly limited promo given only to event judges. Nielsen's relationship with Wizards of the Coast came to an end when she was caught following and liking tweets from various racist, antisemitic, transphobic, and far-right conspiracy theorist accounts. She even appeared on a QAnon podcast, where she gifted the host with art.

We're likely to see more cards from the crossover be announced in the coming days before the full release on November 29.

Original Story: League of Legends' Arcane series has been hugely popular since it debuted on Netflix earlier this month, and now it's making its way over to Magic the Gathering with the next Secret Lair: Universes Beyond crossover release.

Magic The Gathering: Secret Lair X Arcane are two different 'drops' – releases that will be available for a limited time through the official Secret Lair website. The first is the main Secret Lair X Arcane drop itself, which will feature a currently unannounced number of characters from the show into Magic as Legendary Creatures. Though we've not seen any cards from the drop yet, it's probable these are mechanically unique cards in the same vein as last year's The Walking Dead and the recent Stranger Things crossovers and will receive functional, Magic-themed reprints in set boosters next year.

The second drop is Secret Lair X Arcane: Lands, which is said to show locations from Arcane like Piltover and The Undercity. The full lineup hasn't been announced yet, but it seems more likely that this drop features Arcane-flavoured reprints of existing lands, which could make it a very good deal for $29.99 in non-foil, or $39.99 in foil.

The launch of the Secret Lair isn't too far away – November 29 until December 23 – Riot and Wizards of the Coast are holding off on revealing the full range of cards until closer to the date. This is presumably because some cards will contain spoilers for Arcane, and they want the show to be able to finish airing on Netflix before announcing them.

What will be interesting to see is whether these cards ever make it in their Arcane-stylings to Magic the Gathering Arena. Legends of Runeterra is Riot's direct (and very good, by the way) competition to Wizards in the digital TCG space and having characters from it pop up on Magic cards could be weird to see.

Secret Lair is Wizards' limited-run service that makes exclusive cards available for preorder for only a few weeks before they're never put on sale again. This week saw the end of the most recent 'superdrop', where seven bundles of alternate-art cards (and the Stranger Things crossover) were up for preorder, such as Monster Anatomy 101's colourful dissection of famous Magic creatures, or the Monster Movie Marathon that imagined cards as old-style horror movie posters.

It's also being used as a way to build up Universes Beyond, the umbrella term Wizards has introduced for its third-party crossovers. Next year is going to be a big year for Universes Beyond, with Magic the Gathering crossing over with Warhammer 40K, Street Fighter, and Fortnite in various ways.

Its introduction has been controversial, with some arguing it dilutes the ongoing story and worldbuilding of Magic the Gathering and turns it into a faux-metaverse pop culture reference soup, as has happened to Fortnite. That hasn't stopped Universes Beyond being massively popular, though, with The Walking Dead being one of the most successful Secret Lair events ever run.

Arcane, meanwhile, has been doing incredibly well since its debut on November 6. It's received praise for its gayness, animation style, and as a celebration of the world League of Legends has created, and has even had another crossover with, of all things, Among Us. It hasn't completely escaped criticism, though, as questions have been raised about its overuse of pop music and its representation of trans people.

Expect a complete reveal of Secret Lair X Arcane in the coming weeks, ahead of a full launch on November 29. Both drops will cost $29.99 for a non-foil version, or $39.99 for foil.
