Magic: The Gathering’s head designer has revealed he doesn’t know if Unfinity’s controversial Acorn cards would make a return, even if another parody Un-set were to happen.

While previous Un-sets, which often feature cards that break the normal game rules, used a large, silver border to signify they were not legal in any organised play, Unfinity instead opted to stamp specific cards as “Acorn Cards”, and leave much of the rest of the set playable in formats like Vintage, Legacy, and Commander.

However, on his blog, Magic’s head designer Mark Rosewater has suggested that future Un-sets may not use the acorn stamp system again. When asked about if we’d ever see Acorn cards in a Standard-legal set (which Unfinity was not), Rosewater responded by saying “Let’s see if I can get acorns in another Un-set”.

Of course, with Unfinity barely being a month old, it’s possible that Wizards is still trying to assess the popularity of both Acorn and Eternal-legal Un-set cards before committing to them further. In an earlier question, Rosewater admitted it was “too early” to know if Unfinity itself had performed well enough to secure a follow-up, regardless of if it had Acorn cards or not.

The response to Unfinity’s introduction of Acorn-stamped cards has proved a tough sell with Magic players. A large part of the backlash has been due to Acorn cards, by design, allowing cards that don’t have the stamp to be played in Eternal, Vintage, and Legacy. For previous Un-sets, there was a solid line between them and the rest of Magic, which the Acorn system is seem as a blurring of. As a result, the idea of its wackier mechanics, such as stickers and Attractions, and more whimsical tone popping up in sanctioned games has proved unpalatable to some.

Even if Acorn cards do eventually prove popular enough to keep, there is no parody set planned for next year, and it took five years to get Unfinity out the door following Unstable. It will likely be a very long time before we more of that Acorn stamp.
