In most strategy RPGs, promoting a unit from one class to another is as easy as opening up a menu, locating their listing, and upgrading them accordingly. One moment, the character is a conventional soldier. The next, she's a professional death dealer who has forged a blood pact with the gods. You know, video game stuff.

Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed And Rebound prefers to do things dramatically. Since your units are all Lord Zetta's peons, souls resurrected to battle in his honor, it's no surprise that they'd willingly offer up their lives for the chance to be reborn as someone greater. And since, from a gameplay point of view, that "chance" is 100 percent? Yeah, let's go ahead and do the thing.

It's called reincarnation, and it's all the rage. Your party will become so much more powerful if you'll just do them the honor of killing them dozens of times. Make them happy. Make them strong.

Reincarnation in Makai Kingdom, Explained

There are two key ways to have a unit reincarnate. Either you'll use the "Make A Wish" request for building a new facility — chat with Zetta and select that option — or have the unit situated within a star-rank item (one or higher) and summon them via wishing. The latter's great, but the former is the fastest method and the one you're likely to use the most. We'll focus on that one for now.

Our guide on creating facilities will come in handy here. Once you have determined what you'd like the character to create, confirm your conviction when the game reminds you that your buddy is going to die to make it happen. After a short sequence showing the character zapped into oblivion, your shiny new structure will emerge.

But your job isn't over. Go ahead and check an item in the hub area. Any item will do. You'll note that the deceased character is suddenly available as a sort of "default configuration" for rolling another unit through the item. Fascinating, right? Click on the character and voila. You've returned them to the land of the living. Or however one would classify the netherworld.

Why Reincarnation is Makai Kingdom's Best Gameplay Feature

Makai Kingdom Omega Fire

We've gone over how to reincarnate a character, but the why of the matter may yet elude you. After all, what would be the point in killing a teammate only to bring them back exactly as they were before?

The short answer is that there is no other way for characters to swap classes. If you want your Apprentice to become a Swordsman/Samurai, this is what you do. Healers and Medics, so on and so forth. There is something else, however — something tantalizing that you can only reap rewards from via repeated reincarnations.

During initial character creation, you finished things up by assigning three bonus points, correct? You do this every time you create someone new. You can choose to spend those points between base stats and the three elemental affinities. At this earliest juncture, it makes the most sense to focus on whatever the newly-minted characters clearly excel at in the first place. Over time, you will amass so many of these bonus points that you can chuck them everywhere.

Don't frown over the three-point limit in the beginning. You'll be dealing with a larger sum of points as your reincarnations continue. This is thanks to a formula that factors in the character's present level, class, and skills. (This is also why you cannot just repeatedly kill them at level 1 and expect to max out their stats in minutes. Well, also, there's no way you'd have enough mana. But we digress.)

Add it all up — literally and figuratively — and your army can eventually reach such blazing heights that the story's final boss will drop in a single action. If such an absurd degree of overachievement doesn't feel like fun to you, flex those challenge-loving muscles on the Event Dungeons that gradually unlock over the course of two, three, four, and ultimately five playthroughs. We promise you will feel the burn against a fair few.
