Sharks are one of the most recognizable predators in the world considering how often they appear in the media. With Jaws being a catalyst, other films and games about these toothy beasts soon followed. Most recently, Tripwire Interactive’s Maneater finally got a Steam release allowing PC players to dive into their underwater world.

You play as a newly-born shark pup who must eat their way up the food chain to get strong enough to take on local bounty hunters. The game dedicates a lot of time to exploring shark movement, behavior, and relationship with the environment. Even so, there are many aspects that less than accurate.

10 Sharks Can’t Emit Sound

One of the first abilities you get in Maneater is Sonar. Sonar stands for Sound Navigation And Ranging which is a process used by animals to determine the location of surrounding objects. Marine life most well known for using sonar are dolphins and whales, which use sounds like clicking to map out their surroundings.

The problem is that sharks don’t have vocal cords so they can’t use sonar. This also means that sharks can’t growl or roar, which is something the Maneater star does quite frequently.

9 Sharks Need To Keep Moving Or They Sink

A common myth about sharks is that they need to keep swimming or they’ll die. This is true for some species, but not all. However, something that all sharks share is that they need to keep moving or they will sink. Sharks are a marine species that lack a swim bladder, the organ that gives fish their buoyancy.

Instead, sharks rely on their powerful fins and pectorals to keep themselves moving through water. There are multiple moments in Maneater where you’ll need to hide from pursuers or rest in a Grotto, but the shark will remain comfortably aloft.

8 Sharks Will Not Actively Hunt Humans

A huge part of shark media, especially in Maneater, is their relationship with humans. Sharks attacks do occur and they can be quite vicious, but a majority of victims survive the attack. This is due to the fact that humans are not an inherent part of a shark’s diet, as well as the theory that sharks don’t like how they taste.

However, a lot of Maneater gameplay is dedicated to killing and eating large numbers of people. One of the main reasons sharks attack humans is simply because they confuse them for a different species, but will likely let go once they realize their mistake.

7 Sharks Can’t Produce Electricity

Maneater Shark Electric Evolution

There are over 400 species of sharks across the world. There are even species of bioluminescent sharks who are able to emit light via special cells. In Maneater, you can unlock Bio-Electric evolution that allows you to shock and stun targets with your attacks.

Despite this and the diversity of the species, sharks can’t generate electricity akin to electric eels. The closest connection sharks have to electricity is via a special organ called electroreceptors which allow them to sense the electrical fields generated by other organisms.

6 Sharks Don’t Use Venom

Maneater Shadow Shark Evolution

Sharks are apex predators, making them powerful and a prime threat in their natural habitats. They’re able to tear through animals with their powerful jaws and have even been known to destroy boats. Sharks are strong but are limited to just their physical strength. Maneater, though, allows you to evolve your shark to poison targets via biting and movement.

The reality is that sharks don’t have venom glands and can’t actively poison their prey. Still, there have been reports that the flesh of a Greenland shark is full of neurotoxins and so should not be consumed.

5 Sharks Don’t Have Bones

Maneater Shark Bone Evolution

Early on, you can unlock a Bone evolution which adds exoskeleton-like pieces to the shark’s body. Even though they still have skeletons, sharks do not actually have bones. Sharks are a type of fish known as elasmobranchs, which means they are made up of cartilaginous tissue, which forms their skeleton.

This even applies to their teeth, but they can still fossilize over time. As sharks age, they add calcium salts to their cartilage skeleton to make it stronger. This chemical makeup actually results in quality fossils.

4 Sharks Evolve Over Millenia, Not Minutes

A key mechanic of Maneater is being able to evolve the shark into different forms. As you play through, you’ll gain access to three distinct evolutionary trees: Bone, Bio-Electric, and Shadow. You need to eat a variety of prey to get the necessary points and nutrients to upgrade each body part. As long as you’re in a Grotto, you can upgrade and swap out parts as many times as you like.

The problem is that, while sharks are a species that’s hundreds of millions of years old, it took them that long to evolve to where they are today. The fastest shark evolution took at least 9 million years.

3 Sharks Fear Orcas

Maneater Apex Orca Intro

In Maneater, one of your goals is to reach the top of the food chain. To do this, you’ll need to knock off the Apex Predator of each region. While many of them are reasonable and somewhat believable, there’s one that’s hard to believe: The Apex Orca.

The great white shark is considered one of the most dangerous species, but even it will avoid an Orca hunting ground. There have been numerous reports and recordings showing Orcas attacking and killing sharks for food. Considering that the Maneater shark is a bull shark, they stand even less of a chance.

2 Sharks Aren’t Always Eating

Among all the different shark games, a core aspect is eating. In Maneater, you need to eat everything you can in order to gain experience and evolve. This includes a diverse range of prey, predators, and inedible objects. It’s also necessary during combat as it’s the only way to restore health. Yet, contrary to popular belief, sharks are not constantly eating.

This is due to the fact that sharks are able to store fat and oils over long periods of time. Sharks also do not eat everything they attack.

1 Sharks Can’t Move On Land

Maneater Shark Laying On Deck

In a game like Maneater where a majority of the game takes place in the water, you’ll surprisingly spend a fair amount of time on land. In order to complete certain missions and get out-of-reach collectibles, you’ll need to beach the shark and flop around. Unfortunately, despite their physical strength, sharks are helpless on land.

Much like whales, beached sharks can’t move around and need to rely on either the tide or people to return them to the water. They’re such determined hunters that they often beach themselves in pursuit of prey.
